Misc Of Interest to Writers: toki pona

Friends,

This is my latest enthusiasm.

I recently lost my internet access for a couple of weeks. One of the things I amused myself with was learning a fascinating little artificial language called “toki pona”.
{Fortunately I had already downloaded the PDF.}

toki pona is a minimalist language with only 119 words. The woman who invented it was a Taoist at the time and she intentionally created a language that would limit one to broad and simple concepts. In Theory, the language won’t support fine nuances in meaning. Not me, I get into scheming how to express myself in spite of the limited vocabulary.

Keep in mind:

I have NO talent for languages. My memory and my attention span are nowhere near what they used to be. I got pretty good in ten days.

{Hint: If you want to speak it, do your lessons aloud with good pronunciation.}

Its good fun. It expands the mind. In certain instances, it might be handy to be able to express oneself openly in the presence of strangers or even hostiles, without them knowing what you said.

{There seems to be somewhat less than 200 toki pona users and most of them can’t hear “fast” enough to follow it spoken. So the odds the black hats will speak it is minimal…}

Here is the site where you can download a copy of the same PDF that I used if you’re interested:

Ignore the few feeble attempts to advance a Politikal Agenda. This Dude didn’t invent the language, but he’s childish enough to work some of his beliefs into the practice exercises.

I also have a full-color slightly more detailed course that I can send to anyone who wants it—I’ll need an “E” Mail address. Way too much material to PM.
