La Palma the next island has an ultra marathon around the crater of their volcano, pretty cool.
Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily has erupted again though,

Not so much Tenerife but La Palma has the issue of a giant crack down the island that could cause a massive landslip in the event of an eruption or possibly even a large earthquake.
I remember the original BBC documentary when it came out,
Being on the Atlantic coast myself ( 5 min walk to the beach ) , I was very much alarmed when I saw it
At least you would have several hours warning before it reached the US.
It's about 4 hours to reach us here, so we'd have time to scoot up the mountain.

I bet that Portugal would welcome the US military moving in. There are a couple of air bases that could work out with some improvements (longer/wider runways). I'm thinking that Beja and Monte Real would be strong possibilities for hosting USAF aircraft.
But replacing the Navy base at Rota might take going elsewhere. Maybe Italy or France if they can pull their heads out of their nethers. Montijo might fill the bill if the port and airfield can be expanded to fit US needs. But the new Lisbon international airport is being built not far away and airspace congestion could be a problem when the new airport opens.

The Naval Base at Cadiz would be the nearest to Tenerife and that is over 1700km ( 1056 miles ) away.
