WASHINGTON: In signing the executive order in the Oval Office on Thursday, which he did away from the view of television cameras or an audience, Obama said he believed the new office would help nonprofit organizations and community groups — secular and religion-based — to administer aid to families across the nation affected by the economic crisis.

Obama, who spoke about his Christianity frequently during his presidential campaign, told an audience at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday that religion should not be "wielded as a tool to divide us from one another." He called on believers of all faiths to set aside divisions "to lift up those who have fallen on hard times."

The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships will be headed by Joshua DuBois, a 26-year-old Pentecostal minister who led the religious outreach for Obama during his presidential race. The president also announced a 25-member advisory council that includes pastors, secular leaders and academics with wide-ranging views.
