O dear. Such pretty Whimsical wooden wonderland. What could possibly go wrong with that being built in fire country, under a bridge, no less, in earthquake country? Won't even go into the health nightmare of disinfecting and sanitizing wood.

Takes me back decades, to the first, and last, time I ever had to excuse myself from a meeting- it wasn't the depravity, death, destruction, danger, or even watching infant and child sized coffins lowered into the dirt that got the best of me: it was, instead, the endless meetings of the stream of do-gooders who'd come along, and who's money we needed, that we had to try and educate from scratch because in their ignorance they were actually doing more harm than good-

This particular instance they'd come in with some lovely chintz fabric they intended to use for curtains at one o' the local shanty town set ups, and had to have it explained that what really would be useful was some heavy duty bleachable gauze for wound care, particularly the women who were being used roughly and needed, well they needed medical care, but in leiu of having the legal means to insist upon that, they needed some educating and products to provide self care.

That mismatch between problem and proffered solutions remains breath taking, and that it persists and even thrives today fuels a fury in me I thought I'd let go of long ago.

Those 'do gooders' were not evil, of course- at the time they were from like the third or second wealthiest counties in the country, so maybe they just didn't understand the real causes, consequences and solutions to the problem... or that the endless pot of soup was roadkill, and not necessarily deer : (. Today though, there really is no excuse. We know.

To their credit, many rolled up their sleeves, canceled their catered luncheons, traded their spotless tennies for boots, and turned into assets and real advocates for the community.
But some never got it, or at least, never cared enough to do anything truly helpful about it. I read stories like this, all these years later, and it occurs to me that many are still of that ilk, n I recall anew having to leave that meeting, and fancy I can hear satan smile o'er the sound o my own choked back sob.

We know, we've known since way back then, that there are subsets of causation, and thus solutions, to the issue, that our great hopes that closing mental health hospitals and providing the care for folks in home was a glorious and well intentioned effort to provide dignity and quality of life for the mentally ill- but one that failed miserably when the rubber met the road.

The problem as always can be understood if you follow the money- We "could" be demanding our mental health institutes expand, damn the cost. We "could" be using our miles of empty retail and industrial real estate to rehab into workable solutions for safe, centralized resource distribution combined with some dignity and quality of life measures. We "could" be using the military models of units to create the same. We could reimagine the country farms. In a world in which we "could" be doing so many things: this is what we are coming up with. still.

We had a business plan/set up to make a "santa's square' for the hospice kids strong enough, and various domestic violence populations, here at the farm- where the kids of all ages could ride sleighs adorned with silver bells, pulled by bedazzled goats, into santa's workshops, and ultimately to meet santa himself. . . and the buildings designed were similarly charming and whimsical- and scrapped because they were not good enough for the few hours they'd be put to use...

:: shrug :: Consequences follow actions. That our "solutions" are so ill designed is clear example of that as are the stories of the lives led and choices made that fuel the need... n so we build sheds to house indigent children who're allowed to defecate and masterbate on the streets, while the rube workers, of whom there are fewer and fewer because that's a losers game, work their asses off to pay for it, while having so little to show for their efforts.

As to whether we will hit shanty ville for the majority, I am not that worried. We used to house families in 1000-1200 sf, now we have veritable mansions, and we have basements and attics overflowing with every material non essential thing we could ever hope to need. I look around here and there is room for two or three families yet, comfortably, and that is true across the land. Secret is to hang on to the family and friends you wouldn't mind finding under your roof.

It all becomes much more enchanting when you call em Hobbits instead of Homeless Pan Handlers
and put em in cute little hobbit houses instead of tarp and cardboard shanties

Why build an elevated highway in an earthquake zone if you are going to use the land underneath as a homeless shelter?

Get all the Homeless to move into those cute little cob (i.e. mud) huts under the overpasses and then wait for an earthquake. Rumble - rumble....then POOF!! flat as a pancake and.....No more homeless! Problem solved and buried all at once. Very clever....and, I might add....VERY EVIL! BAWAAA ha ha ha!!
