Nina Pham's boyfriend may be the latest to receive the Ebola virus from first-person contact with someone stricken with the disease. Pham, a 26-year-old nurse employed at the epicenter of the Dallas Ebola scare – the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital – was part of a team that doctored Thomas Duncan, a Liberian national who has become known as “patient zero” and who died of Ebola on Oct. 8.
Dallas News on Oct. 14 wrote that Pham is confronting “the deadly virus with the prayers of her family and friends — and the blood of an Ebola survivor coursing through her veins.” Dr. Kent Brantly, a Fort Worth native, has provided his anti-body rich blood for transfusions to three Ebola sufferers thus far: Pham, NBC News cameraman Ashoka Mukpo and aid worker Dr. Rick Sacra.
According to Dallas News, a man “described as a friend of Pham’s is also being monitored for the disease, although he said he didn’t know the friend’s relationship. Others have said the patient being monitored is Pham’s boyfriend.”
Meanwhile, Pham's dog, a one-year-old King Charles Spaniel named Bentley, is being held at the decommissioned Hensley Field naval air base in south Dallas. According to NBC, there was uproar in Spain after Madrid authorities euthanized a dog belonging to a nursing assistant sickened by Ebola.
News outlets learned that the unnamed boyfriend of Pham is in isolation after Jeff George, CEO of Alcon in Fort Worth Texas where the boyfriend works, sent an e-mail out to his personnel advising those who may have had contact with the boyfriend to monitor themselves. The email indicates that the boyfriend was checked into a hospital back on Oct. 12.
“I am writing to make you aware that one of our Fort Worth associates was admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. He is being monitored for potential signs and symptoms of the Ebola virus. The associate has not shown any signs of symptoms of the Ebola virus. After consultation with the Texas Department of Health, we are confident that there is no risk for Alcon associates,” wrote George.
Officials at the Texas hospital have apologized for “mistakes” made in their response and treatment of Thomas Eric Duncan – who was treated at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital before he died of Ebola shortly after being returned to the hospital on Sept. 28. Thus far, two nurses part of a team that doctored Duncan have been stricken with Ebola: Pham and now 29-year-old Amber Vinson.
“Unfortunately, in our initial treatment of Mr. Duncan, despite our best intentions and a highly skilled medical team, we made mistakes,” said Dr. Daniel Varga of Texas Health Services. Varga’s words, part of prepared testimony for a congressional hearing scheduled Thursday, are a frank admission of downfalls that have yet to bottom out.
“We did not correctly diagnose his symptoms as those of Ebola. We are deeply sorry,” Varga offered.
The NY Times on Oct. 16 wrote that Varga, “the chief clinical officer for Texas Health Resources, the medical group that oversees Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital,” will testify today to the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will discuss the CDC’s Ebola response, which has also come under criticism.
