From the Newsweek article:

The U.S. government has already—under a conservative Republican administration—effectively nationalized the banking and mortgage industries. That seems a stronger sign of socialism than $50 million for art. Whether we want to admit it or not—and many, especially Congressman Pence and Hannity, do not—the America of 2009 is moving toward a modern European state.

Aside from the wars that the Republicans seem to support what exactly did Bush do that made him a "Conservative Republican"?

I know Fred, and the boys over at the leftist propaganda house known as newsweek like pinning current events on conservatives, but there is nothing conservative about the government helping people into houses they can't afford. Bush supported the socialist programs that lead directly to this housing bubble, then it burst and the socialist all scream for more government control to "Fix" it. Of course, the fix will be a lot like how they fixed the problem of poor people not being able to afford houses.

Well, if that doesn't wake up the sheep while standing in the check out line I don't know what will.

I offered no opinion at all in the comment you referenced, I merely pointed out to VesperSparrow that the article was about the Bush administration being very socialistic (because VS's comment appeared to be putting the blame for socialism on Obama/Clinton).

Read on down in the thread. I offered my opinion in a later comment. Feel free to comment on that, but please don't jump to incorrect conclusions because I quoted Newsweek.

Bush wasn't a conservative by any stretch of the imagination, but he sure liked to call himself one. A compassionate one, at that.

You bolded the sections you agreed with, or to make a point right? That Bush "A conservative" was responsible for the socialism?

Thus, it's stupid to pin this on conservatives as Newsweek does.

I bolded them to make the point that socialism can't be pinned on Obama, as it appeared to me that VesperSparrow was trying to do with the "driven by these public enemies" comment.

As I said later, Bush didn't start the ball rolling.
