In 2018, California voters passed an initiative that requires more space for egg-laying chickens, veal calves, and for breeding pigs. The 2018 initiative goes into effect on January 1, 2022. The egg and veal industry can meet the standards, but only about 4% of pig farms can or will comply due to vastly increased overhead. California consumes about 15% of the nation's pork products. This may end up reducing prices elsewhere in the country, or simply cutting the supply to California.
