TOKYO - Japanese police are monitoring a new computer virus called “bot” that they believe has infected at least 2,500 computers in Japan and could be spreading, a report said Saturday.

The National Police Agency said it had confirmed 20 cases of networks around the world being infected by the virus, which uses other computers to send out spam, but none were in Japan, Kyodo News said.

However one of the cases had led to about 2,500 computers believed to be in Japan, among 30,000 elsewhere, becoming infected, Kyodo said.

The virus creates networks of infected computers to mount attacks on specific websites when ordered to do so by hackers, Kyodo said.

The attacks by spam or invalid data can disable other computers and overload targeted websites, forcing them to crash, Kyodo said.
