Need Skunk DE-Stinker

DustMusher

Deceased
One of my Malamutes got a point blank spray from a skunk. No contact as the skunk was hiding behind a bunch of scap wood.

What is the best thing to de-skunk the poor dog, she is banished to the outside kennel until she passes the 'sniff test'

TIA

I give up.
Not near a pet supply store, are ya? Well, you could try a tomato juice bath, I suppose (warm water), or there's these things you could order but it would take too long:

Use a qt of perioxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and a couple of tablespoons of liquid dish soap. Works wonders. Wash the dog with it and rinse thoroughly

I have an Aussie that hates skunks and every spring gets at least a dozen baths in this stuff.

I pray this never happens to my dogs, and will be lurking here to find out what on earth tio do if it does!!!

I would douse them with any tomato based product I could find on the prep shelves, after dumpin all the stored vinegar over them...

P.S. just read Just Me's post, and am gonna store up more peroxide and baking soda, to use after the tomato stuff and vinegar!

Will their hair all fall out after I get done wif 'em?:D

Try one quart of Hydroger Peroxide mixed with one quarter cup of dish soap. Stir until it lathers. Scrub him with a soft brush using this mixture. Rinse. Your done!

Well, if your cat screws up and gets itself nailed by a skunk...

There's only one thing to do:

:sldr:

Now, if your poor dog has an accidental run-in with a skunk (undoubtedly in that case the skunk's fault), you go to a pet store or feed store, buy some goo intended for that purpose, and use as directed.

See how easy that is? :D

ACK! Skunks!

We've used both tomato juice, and also peroxide (one bottle, mixzed with Ivory dish soap and water. Both seem to work, one dog really loves the tomato juice bath, and the other prefers the peroxide/soap.

Hope you get it resolved.

DM,

Years ago, we had a collie that got sprayed.

Tomato Juice - about 6 (large) cans worked very well, but stained the white ruff pink for weeks. There was a slight skunk odor left afterward, but it wasn't so bad that he couldn't get hugs.

The skunk spray is oil-based, so you need something to cut the oil - which is why everyone recommends tomato juice because of it's high acid content.

Grapefruit juice would also work without the staining, and would be easier to work with.

Blessings,
Jeannie

When you get all done with whatever you do from all the good suggestions, cover your dogs eyes and spray him/her with FEBREZE all over.

Rub that into the hair about 3 times. Make sure you cover the eyes.

This worked well with our dog. Face shots are tough because you have to be so careful with the eyes.

All our dog wanted to do was say hi to the little fella. Yuck. Makes me gag just thinking about cleaning up our Toots.

Our malamute got sprayed once many years ago. I didn't have tomato juice, and didn't like the idea of washing him in it anyway, too messy. I instead used lemon juice. It worked wonderfully and we let him in the house the next day. Just be careful around the eyes. Good Luck!

We have four dogs, and at least 100 skunks all lurking right at our fenceline just waiting for our dogs to walk by so they can victimize them yet again. We've had three sprayed in one night twice. We've had a total of 14 skunk incidents in a year and a half.
Just Me's recipe has worked EVERY time.
We put the peroxide/soap/baking soda mix on, rub it in good, rinse, than apply some white vinegar (maybe 6 ounces per 40 lb dog) and rinse that out. The face is the hard part- my Heeler still has some smell to her when she gets wet. She'll get another bath tomorrow night.
Three of them just got sprayed again a week ago... LOL

JDG...

In that case, why aren't you shooting skunks near your property on sight, putting out traps and poison, etc.? Unless there were likely legal consequences, I certainly would do those.

Thanks everyone for the recipes. I am going with the peroxide/baking soda/dawn dish soap followed by vinegar rinse in the AM.

One of my Malamute buddies suggested this, and then I got a ton of responses from the Mushing Community. Mushers and their dogs must get a lot of up close and personal contact with those critters and all of them sent the above recipe.

Years ago I had a long haired shepherd who loved to chase skunks. Tried the tomato juice treatment and ended up with a tomato basted skunky, pink dog. Wanted to avoid that since Libby has a LOT of white on her as she is a Mal with the required mantled coat and white front, belly and legs.

Guess I know what I am doing in the AM.

Also, if anyone is interested in Malamutes, I have a link to a fantastic website that is Everything Malamute. PM me and I will send on the link.

The most useful is one discovered by a scientist named Paul Krebaum. Here are some excerpts from a newspaper article about it, including the directions on how to make it. Cheers,

Here's the formula:
".... 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, which costs about $2 at a drugstore; 1/4 cup of baking soda; and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap, which breaks up the oils in the skunk spray and allows the other ingredients in the solution to do their stuff. Mix the three ingredients together and use immediately. The chemical reaction produced from these ingredients lasts only a limited time. If you use this formula to remove skunk odor from your pet, be sure to rinse off him off with water. Do not let the solution soak for more than a few minutes.

This odor remover works on anything including decomposing organic matter, fecal matter, urine and skunk spray."

"If the story of Krebaum's formula is ever made into a movie, the first scene will show Krebaum working away in his lab at Molex Inc. in Lisle. His face is screwed up as he smells something bad. He is doing research using chemicals called thiols - some of the nastiest smelling chemicals around. Thiols are produced by many things, including the degradation of proteins. Thiols are responsible for the odors that come from decomposing flesh and fecal matter..........

In October of 1993, Chemical and Engineering News published Krebaum's formula. "Once you mix the hydrogen peroxide with the baking soda, it is no longer stable," said Krebaum. "You can't store it in a bottle, because it would explode from all the oxygen." "It wasn't worth trying to get a patent on it because I couldn't put it in a bottle," said Krebaum. "So why not make this a free gift to humanity type deal."

MODS -- Move this to the Homesteading Sig?

Update. I used the peroxide/baking soda/dawn mix. Lots of clear water to rinse, no vinegar.

Libby smells like a dog again. Actually like a Malamute (they do not have a doggie odor, even wet.) She is agan allowed back in the pack.

Thank you.
