Canning Need a new stove

The repair guy came. He doesn't think he can get parts. It's a 1952 Kenmore made by Roper. Natural gas with pilot lights.

I'm not concerned about all the hoopla about how evil gas stoves are. My house was built in 1905. It vents.

The induction stoves look interesting. I use cast iron and am moving to stainless steel. But my canner and pressure cookers are aluminum. Can I lay down a sheet of steel plate on the cook top to heat a pressure canner? Or stick to gas?

Since there is no electricity by the stove location, an electrician will need to come. Probably should get electricity to it so the clock and oven light works

What I want is a stove strong enough to hold a 5 gallon pot of water. 50 pounds or a little more. Fixable. Can I get parts. A good oven . All burners should be simmer burners. I'm spoiled with my 1952 stove. All burners have good control.

Oh, it should outlast me. 30 years will do it.

The new stoves seem to be pilot less. But can it be lit without electricity. We ate well during the duracho(sp). 4 days with no electricity.

Any suggestions?

I grew up with an electric store with the big round coils. After gas I never want to go back.

Stick with gas. If power out I can still light burners with a match. I have a heavy canner, heavy stockpots and my family size iron skillet is almost a 2 burner size. Stove handles it fine. My grates can go in dishwasher

Only problem with my stove (less than a year old) is that the bottom drawer is the broiler. I won't ever use it.

I wonder if glass tops can handle the weight of a canner. Don't know, never used one.
I would stick with gas, I hate cooking on elec.
Our 2012 gas stove top will light with a lighter, but the oven will not without electricity. When elec. is out, we plug it into a battery if we need to use the oven.

You can still buy a "cordless" (non electric) gas stove, even though they are all "pilotless" these days, as far as I know. The oven and burners are sparked with a battery powered "clicker". A simple 9 volt battery.

Personally I'd never give up gas, and wouldn't touch a glass top with a ten foot pole.

Here is a link. It's a Hotpoint. Not fancy, but non-electric and gas.

I settled on a KitchenAid 30" 5 burner. The broiler is in the oven and a storage drawer in the bottom. We'll see how well the steam self clean over does.

I would have liked a 36 inch stove. Buuut, $4000 is a little more than I want to spend. Lowes has sales ending the 25th. So today.

While I was there I bought a Maytag dish washer. It's supposed to sanitize the pet food bowls. I'm not to worried about pet bowl but more so the mouse tracks and house flies. And getting canning jars clean.

While I was there the sales guy was extolling the attributes of Bosch. Wifi this and that. When I said I want a stupid washer he said Maytag. The last thing I need is for the appliances taking over the kitchen.

The twenty something sales guy did get when I asked him if the Bosch washer is named HAL.

I did not buy the protection plans. For $169 you can get a 5 year protection plan. The decal on the washer says warranted for 10 years.

Hope this works.

Merry Christmas all.

Yeah that looks good. I opted for a continuous grate. My very good 1952 Kenmore badged Roper has grates like this. Sometimes a hot water bath canning is tippy unless it's positioned just right. And don't sneeze near it.

It says you can light the top with a match. But not the oven. I finally figured out how to light the oven. There are no instructions.

I had to get a small tray to put my stirring spoons on. The continuous grate will have advantages, I hope.

First meal is burrito mix. Now I have to figure out what the banging noise is when mashing ground beef.

It's going to be a learning curve.

Finally found the instructions. Yes all 5 sparker go off when lighting a burner. Seems wasteful.
This is standard industry practice. One spark generator feeds all of the igniters. Much cheaper than having multiple spark generators.

Most modern gas stoves require electricity in order for the oven to work. They use an electric solenoid valve with an electric flame sensor for safety system. There are a few who still do it the old way.

I'm in Michigan. I've got a Detroit Jewel stove from the 50s that I would like to sell. It's in good shape.

From what I've seen online awhile back a Detroit Jewel in good shape is worth more than a new stove. Pw said a repair guy has offered her $500 for the O'Keef Merritt stove in the garage as is. Refurbished these old stoves go fora few thousand.

Looks good. My recipe is from Quaker masa harina bag. It calls for sautéed onion, garlic, and green pepper in butter. Ground beef with salt, black pepper, chili powder, cumin, oregano. Sometimes I add paprika. After spices it gets a half can of corn per pound of meat. Tomato paste or sauce. Cook it down. Roll it up with whatever you want in your tortilla.

I usually smother it in Pace Picante sauce.

This project is to make frozen burritos for easy lunches.

I have a non electric 30" Brown gas stove (propane) with pilots....from Lehman..as far as I know they still make them....
Was wonderful a couple of years ago when we had ice storm and no electricity for two weeks....
Wish I'd known. Right now Lehmans is not available in my country. Not sure why. Last time I looked at Amazon it talked about shipping to the Netherlands. Not sure my phone knows where it is.

They go for $500 to $2,000 at the antique stove works on our area. If you just want it gone offer it up on Craig’s List for $900 and dicker with the buyer on the price.

I get around Lehman's problem by using an address from the Irish Post office, which is an American address that is forwarded to Ireland (and customs) for a fee. I have to use a VPN to access the site now, and I've been ordering from them for nearly 30 years. They used to ship all over the world.

I know private companies in other countries on this side of the water will provide a US Address for a fee and charges. From what I hear, it isn't as good as the Irish Post Office one, but it may be worth looking into.

In my opinion there is no better dishwasher than Bosch. Lasted a long time and cleaned squeaky clean.
