Tongue Cleaning

Here is another oral hygiene practice that helps the teeth and the whole body by reducing bacteria and the "gunk" that bacteria feed on. After using a tongue cleaner a few times, you never want to be without one! I've used one for at least 30 years. I used to get them in HI in the drug stores - little plastic ones, Japanese people used them; they are a tradition in much of Asia. Later I was able to find stainless steel, and now i have a copper one as well. Silver tongue cleaners are sold but I'm not a high roller! I've had people say "well, I clean my tongue with my toothbrush/spoon" etc but after they use a tongue cleaner, they see how much more efficient it is.

Cleaning the tongue daily using this simple tool removes accumulated mucus and toxins from the mouth. It also promotes fresher breath, stimulates vital organs of the body (the tongue has reflex points on it just like the hands and feet), activates the lymphatic system, reduces the breeding grounds for bacterial growth - thus helps to keep gums and teeth healthy. Scrap the tongue first thing in the morning, back to front several times.

Here is a link to what they look like and where they can be purchased on Amazon:

Okay here's another oral hygiene product easily made at home better and cheaper than anything in the store.

MOUTHWASH

I've made mouthwash before but not for a while. Since DH has had a couple of dentist visits lately (a tooth that went "bad" and needed a root canal shudder), I've been thinking about tooth health and doing more about it. Here's how I made mouthwash the other day, sorry amounts are not precise - to put it mildly.

I started out with a small bottle of our well water - maybe 8 oz - and about half an eye dropper worth each of Eucalyptus and Peppermint Essential Oils and a bit less of Thyme EO. Last time I looked at Listerine (years ago) it had derivatives of Eucalyptus and Thyme oils in it. I shook it well and tasted it and Yikes!!! Way too strong.

So I poured it all into a larger bottle - (I wash all useful bottles and jars for use, it was an old Soy Sauce bottle that holds 20 oz) and topped it off with maybe 1/2 oz (?) of Clear Springs pure grain alcohol, 190 proof.

It is still pretty strong so what we've been doing is shaking it, pouring a bit (one T maybe?) into a cup and adding equal amount of water. Hub loves it, uses it several times a day and especially after eating. If it's used for a few minutes really squishing around all the teeth, it makes the mouth feel very clean and with a lively flavor. The EOs have a refreshing clean scent and taste as well as anti-microbial properties. And the cost? Maybe .25?

I have not figured out a way to get EOs nicely disbursed in liquids. I"ve tried mixing with a bit of grain alcohol or vegetable glycerine first and then adding to the water or herb extract (various methods and products) but I have not successfully gotten the EOs to emulsify or disburse correctly. I should look it up. So shaking well first is vital.

Aha! For those of you who wanted a source for French Green Clay, here's a good one:

www.herbco.com

It's the Monterey Bay Spice Company. They have a catalog they will mail you but your first order if you do it online they give you a 20% discount, they did for me. I wish I'd done a bigger first order! The green clay is $5.40 a pound but if you get 5 or more #s it is $4.86.

I'm going to do an order this week as green clay is my favorite. I've ordered bottles from them, some herbs and tea as well.

Same price but they have one flat shipping rate of $6.25

No matter how much you order of their products from them, the shipping is one flat rate. It is a great deal. I have received packages from them that would have cost $20-30 for the shipping alone - still for only $6.25

Ah, thank you! I like flat rate shipping much better. I will check that out right now. I think it's pretty clear that all kinds of goods are going to get more and more expensive plus more will be unavailable, I've already experienced both. So any heath related items or any necessities would be good to have on hand. Now that China has issued martial law in certain areas with more protesting, and other things in the news, IMO the downward spiral of what is called "normalcy" will be much accelerated.

just read this great thread!

I just wanted to add one more suggestion... Magnesium Oil... I love using this to brush with and it took care of my *sensitive* teeth.

Thanks, I will take a look. I believe oil pulling as described might help with sensitive teeth.

I just found out another important tooth care procedure. As soon as I can I will post a link or two about it. Apparently a type of bacteria called spirochetes proliferate in the gums and teeth and cause all kind of harm, even to the rest of the body. They are KILLED DEAD by Baking Soda!!!! So now some dentists are recommending brushing teeth just with plain Baking Soda. I went to the dentist not long ago and he was surprised that the bacteria count was so low. Perhaps because of the tooth powder, or oil pulling? I have read that tongue scrapers when used regularly also help lower bacteria count, and I use it daily without fail. I also don't eat much sugar which may help.

But I am going to re-make my tooth powder and add more Baking Soda!
