Mystery of DB Cooper air stewardess who was sent to a nunnery... but was it part of a witness protection programme?

It is America's most notorious unsolved criminal case which, over the past four decades, has had enough twists and turns to match any film script.

So it is not entirely surprising that the latest revelation is one straight out of Hollywood.

The stewardess who famously dealt with the elusive DB Cooper during the Northwest Airlines hijacking and robbery of 1971 spent more than a decade in a nunnery, in what experts believe was part of a witness protection programme.

Miss Mucklow now lives a quiet life in central Oregon under a different name but has co-operated with the ongoing DB Cooper investigation, FBI spokeswoman Ayn Sandalo Dietrich said.

Her role may, however, become more important than ever now after a woman came out to say she believed her uncle was DB Cooper.

Miss Mucklow is thought to be the most likely witness to recognise him, as she spent the most time with him that day.

More information, with several photos at link.

I was under the impression that the Witness Protection Program is for people who testify in court against someone (or some group) who is likely to retaliate for that testimony. Seeing as how the whole point of the mystery is that DB Cooper vanished entirely (no arrests, no court case, no body, in fact almost no leads at all), it's hard to imagine why she would need to go into the program.

I can see why she would have changed her name, though. DB Cooper enthusiasts may have bothered her practically non-stop. I imagine it gets old very quickly when total strangers feel like it's their God-given right to pound on your door every week to ask the same freaking questions over and over and over.

And this is why I wonder why anyone in their right mind would desire to become a big celebrity. Being hounded (bombarded) every single time you go out of your home by paparazzi, autograph seekers, rabid fans with cell phone cameras, etc.

How many of the current crop of celebrities do you think are in their right minds? Makes perfect sense...
