I had a smoke detector that started going off, unplugged it and it still made noise. Took the battery out and it still made a noise but not as loud. Set it outside and after 2 weeks it quit making noise.
Ah, the zombie smoke detector. I had one, too. Yep, still yelled without the battery. I also took it outside and let it wear itself out.

Macgyver, I am disappointed that we have not heard from you regarding the noise. This is a "whatever it takes" scenario. I do not care what you must do, but I gots ta know what is making/was making that sound. FTM, far too many folks have contributed to or just read this thread for you to walk away. It is particularly irresponsible to waste our time like that after seeking our help.

Having broached the subject, IMHO, you are now honor-bound to figure it out and let us know. Should you fail to do so, I must regretfully inform you that you may be the first person to EVER qualify for my ignore list. This is just that serious. You knew/should have known the job was dangerous when you took it.

Many houses in this area have concerns with radon gas in the cellar. Many cellar slabs have ventilation ducts leading to above the roof and a fan unit between floors to draw a "vacuum" below the slab. I say vacuum but all they're trying to do is make small leaks leak OUT from the occupied area to below the slab.

Owner tells of someone whose fan finally "wore out" (they're designed to operate nearly continuously possibly for YEARS) which he helped the owner replace.
