Farm My TREES came!!

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
I ordered trees last year from the conservation department and they came last week. I have had them sitting in the kitchen watering the bags, but not seeing any development on any thing but one bundle......:shk:

I unpacked the bags and LO & BEHOLD!!!! They are all alive and root shoots everywhere!!

YEEE HAW!!

I ordered a BUNCH of them!! I put them all in water buckets to soak.....

I got:

25 Elderberry
50 Paw Paw
50 Persimmon
10 Witch hazel
25 Hazelnut

The elderberry is going NUTS!! I have tried to grow from seed, and to dig up plants and never got them to grow more than a season>>>>>hopefully these will flourish!!

I am most excited about the persimmons I guess....great deer bait and I also make some mighty fine Persimmon walnut bread!!

Plan to plant them all over the 6 acres and sell some or even give them away to people interested!

And then there are the nursery trees due to come in any day now>>>>Plums, cherries, pears and a couple of apple trees.

OH HOW EXCITING!!! I can't wait!!

50 Paw Paw! Wow- that will be a huge abundance of fruit.

They grow well under the canopy of larger trees and also against the house. Do you currently have Paw-Paw trees growing?

No I don't have any. In fact. I have never tasted them! They look like something I would like though...and again, great animal feed! We have a valley area of about two acres. It is not cleared and has some sort of medium to small trees>>>and several large ones. I know that both persimmons and paw paw are "under canopy trees">>>that is, they will grow under the other large trees. Sort of like a "second story" kinda thing, with the persimmons and paw paws being the "first story" of the "tree building......

About growing them against the house>>>>north side?? And will it disturb the foundation of the house??

I'm having a back hoe come in not next week, but the week after to dig about a 100 holes......one heck of a lot easier than hand dig!!

I figure if half of them flourish, if TSHTF then I will be sittin' pretty in a couple of years. Then, after we have eaten all the stored food and everyone else is either self reliant or a hunter, or dead, my home will be AWESOME!! I will patrol it like I did the 40 acres I used to have when the meth makers tried to run me off...and they eventually did only because I had to work AND defend my place. Won't happen again>>>>I will finish the job this time. If you understand my meaning!

One of my Paw-Paw sources is a place where they do grow on the North and NW side of a house...apparently the shade, shelter and heat from the house really help the tree. I am unaware of any foundation or bsmt problems but I would doubt that they would be problematic as they are not large trees.

The Univ of Kentucky is the premiere source for Paw Paw info on the net.

Instead of sticking them in water, which can encourage rot of the roots, you might want to heel them in. That is, dig a shallow trench, lay them on their side, close to one another, and then add just enough soil to cover decently. This will keep them healthy until you can plant. Good luck.

Yeah. I will put them in the raised beds for the next week or so.....just wanted them to absorb as much water as possible before I did....

Hey Summerthyme!! How are you?? We are going to fence in the area that is level....it's about 3 & 1/2 - four acres.....that's where the goats will stay. Better grass and stuff. The orchard will be right outside the fence, but far enough away that they can't stand up and eat the branches! Probably about 10 feet. Then the "wild trees" the persimmons and stuff will be down in the valley...that is, if I don't change my mind>>>again!!

Today I asked DH to get 12 broccoli, 12 cauliflower, 6 cabbage and 12 Brussel sprout plants at the sale barn. Instead he got 12 - 4 packs for the ones I wanted 12 PLANTS of...and 6 - 4 packs of the one I wanted 6 plants of!! Came home with 48 each of broccoli, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower and 24 cabbages!!!! OH MY GOSH!!! What did he think I was going to do with that many?? There's room to plant them all, but good grief!! If we got that much of those veggies, we could NEVER eat that many!

Guess I will take some of the plants to church Sunday and see if anyone wants some! I planted 16 each of Brussel sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower today,,,cabbage goes in tomorrow. Now, even that is too many!! Guess when they "make" I will take the veggies to church too!

I want to add some persimmon trees here too. Dry persimmons can be powdered to make persimmon sugar, an all natural, unprocessed sugar that's safer than the processed white stuff we buy at the store.

I'm about to share some plants at church too, started way too many kale plants this year.
