Had to run to the store for a couple of minor things, and the stiff western winds of 43 mph put the actual temps here in warm and never sunny southern Wyoming around -14 right now.

Lovely,

If I lived in Alaska, I would have so many blankets piled on me that I would not be able to move.
I’ve never been to Alaska, but not from want of trying.

I have been just a couple of miles from the Canadian border…strangely, both times in Washington state, and both from my Apple Mapping job. First time was in Bellingham. Second time was in the tiny town where part of The Postman was filmed, known as Metaline Falls.

Anyway, it’s been getting very cold here, but only a few degrees below zero.

I can’t afford to run the baseboard heaters in each room, and have turned the breakers off to make sure they STAY off. With them on, the electric bill passes $200 a month.

Instead, I’ve got an oscillating heater fan in the living room, with one of those air gap foam things you slide under the door to keep the cold air out. Those two things work pretty well, and keeps the living room a balmy 63°. I also have a couple of three inch wide candles that when lit actually provide some unexpected heat.

In the bedroom and the office, I’ve got those little 1500 watt space heaters, that I always get at the end of spring on the clearance aisle at Walmart. I’ve got several stashed on top of my bookshelf in the office. So far, no failures.

The bedroom heater is about three feet from the edge of my bed, and stays on when outside temps are under 40°…which is a lot lately. When the lights go out at bedtime, I’ve got four blankets and two quilts covering me…and it’s been working fine this year. Plus, the doggies both climb on the bed, and either lay on me, or against me…

It’s my first winter without Annie snuggling up against me under the blankets.

Can’t wait to find out what trying to stay warm in a camping van is going to feel like…
