One keeps barking, and whining. The other is hiding in the basement, shaking. This is unusual behavior for both of them. I live in Vancouver, Wa. :( Just so ya know. Anyone else's animals acting weird tonight?

They can smell the radioactive particles in the air and are not liking it?

They feel the earth move under their feet?

Neither sounds like a good thing. They could smell gasses that come up prior to an earth quake?

Same with mine. She has been barking nonstop for over 2 hours. She is outside, but we have been out there and can't figure out what she is barking at. I'm in TN.

My cats have been really needy too wanting to be close by and wanting attention which is rather unusual for them. The dogs have been wanting to stay close by as well. This has been going on overnight, but then again we do have a windstorm going on too.

My oldest cat has been following me all day. I was thinking earlier how unlike her it is. She is by far the most independent one of all my cats. The other cats are completely normal though. Sleeping all day so they can by hyper all night and keep me awake. LOL

It has been said that animals can sense an earthquake coming.

Take it as a sign and immediately prepare for an earrhquake!

The west coast of the N.A. is where I think the next big earthquake will occurr.

Animals often seem to get disoriented before a quake, so you might not want to let dogs or cats outside without a fence, especially any which are fairly "new" pets for you. The "lost pet" ads in the newspapers often get huge right before a quake...

Summerthyme (nothing going on here in southwestern NY)

All 3 of our adlt dogs have been out & in all day long today... A royal P.I.T.A....

of course the 8 pups have just been their usual noisy selves... Oh Yeah!, their mom (they are 7 weeks old) was doing a real annoying bowing routine all the time today (in yoga they call it the 'dog stretch)

Well...the Cascadia fault, a subduction zone is up there with the Oregon/Washington State folks.

And the Fox folks have been featuring a "ring of fire" scenario, in which they show a map of Chile, New Zealand, Japan, and guess what is missing.....the West Coast of the United States.

And then there is Jim Berkland...he of the "earthquake predictions via the 'lost pets'" page...who says that on this weekend, coming, there are major high tides, and the moon is closest to the earth than in a long time, and that the fish kill in the harbor in southern CA is called an 'earthquake fish kill" in Japan...

Got water? Got Preps?

Seattle area. I heard a bunch of birds outside tweeting up a storm at about midnight. Probably nothing, but it got my attention.

Generally warm and fuzzy
I just read on one of the quake prediction boards that the lost pet ads in San Diego County CA are unusually high. The peeps there tend to monitor the lost pet ads and such as they believe spikes in those often precede earthquakes.

Add to that, Jim Berkland is predicting a bad quake for North America this weekend; Fox News recently had him on TV. (He's the one who predicted the 1989 World Series quake)

Not saying I agree or disagree with the people who attempt to predict quakes, just thought this was interesting in light of the animal behavior reports here.

My cat is being too normal, doing lots of cat naps. I think that might be a clue something is coming? Then again it could be she didn't get enough sleep yesterday and is making up for it today?

FWIW, I'm in SW Oregon. My cats are especially hyper right now, pestering each other a lot more than normal. And my dogs are acting oddly, too, hanging on me everywhere I go. It may have something to do with the impending "super full moon", or the fact that we've been without power for three days, which has disrupted everyone's routine here. But it's not "normal".

I'm just east of North Bend, Wa. which is near Snoqualmie Pass and my cats have been ultra acting up. They are purebred British Shorthairs who are as laid back as their breed can get but last wednesday before the quake, they were fighting and running around and as silent as these cats normally are, were yowling to beat the band. They wanted in and then out and then in and then out...

I have one who is elderly, blind and broke her leg last summer so that's all healed up but again, right when the boys started acting up, she was/is walking in little circles everywhere and I know she hasn't had a stroke or seizure. It's like having an insane Roomba under your feet and she will only calm down when you brush her or pick her up and Brits absolutely hate being picked up.

It all toned down around saturday morning but it has started up again since yesterday afternnoon. In fact as I type this, my extra large 25 lbs. Brit Randy has Bee Bee the young one trapped in the powder room downstairs, oop, Bee Bee just did the leap of life over Randy's head and is now clear of his peril. They go up to each other, sit on their haunches, bunch up their faces into square pompoms and box each other like those old toys from the 60's the Rock'em Sock'em Robots. They are driving me crazy!

We also have a few new cats outstide that I've never seen before who are gushingly friendly and who seemed relieved to be pettted and fed. Poor things, I'm going to check the lost and found lists. V

Edited to add... Poor spelling due to numerous interuptions as you can imagine.

Animals normal here in Northern/Western New Mexico, unless you count an experienced ewe who lambed last night and rejected one lamb (but maybe she's just a racist: loves the white lamb, hates her black lamb). We're 20 miles east of the eastern California border. Dogs just as usual and we are surrounded by faults.

We think of the 1989 earthquake as the Honeymoon earthquake, since we were on our honeymoon in southern New Mexico when it happened. Always remember what year it happened.

My dog has been acting normal lately. But we have had some neighborhood cats fighting like crazy the past 2 nights. I have never seen any cats in our neighborhood before. Im in central Iowa.

Dogs and cats are normal here (western Nevada), dogs clingy but that's completely normal for MinPins (lap dogs) and queenslands (never more than two feet away)

We're in in SW Washington 'bout 45 miles N of Portland, OR and our two, usually very active and talkative guinea pigs (Cavvys) have been silent and hiding in their huts for two days. They've never acted like this before. Very weird.

Our dog Tessie is taking her noon nap. This will be followed by her afternoon siesta, her early evening snooze, and her pre-bedtime rest.

She has been searching the yard very thoroughly when she goes out, but when I asked her what she was looking for, she just replied "damyankees"...

When I saw this thread I paid attention!! I'm in Port Angeles, on the Olympic Peninsula, and my lab pup (15 months) was/is acting strange...didn't want to leave my side this morning and he was going from me to my dd looking like he wanted some reassurance...sort of submissive, wanting to be petted, etc. My first thought was that I was wondering if he is sensing anything, considerting that 1) we are WAY overdue for a BIG ONE, 2)Jim Berkland's stuff and 3) the moon's periee starting this weekend. I'm keeping a close eye on the other livestock (cow, sheep, rabbits, chickens etc.) to see if there is anything unusual...so far nothing but I am alert and awake especially now!!!!

You might want to consider taking them to a vet. If a cat is acting 'normal' then something is wrong. :)

Well by normal, I mean that the little one picks on the big one until the big one gets pissed off. Then they chase each other around the house for awhile, then plop down for naps.

They wait until one of us brings up the mail, then they both want to "help" sort it.

That's not funny at all.

This thread is in fact a bit disturbing because of hundreds of years of reports of animals acting strangly prior to quakes. Remember the elephants in Indonesia heading for the hills prior to their quake/tsunami. Lots of people try to predict quakes, few have any, even modest success, but the reports of these animals in the PNW is nothing to joke about.

Tell your oddball neighbor with no friends to keep his pants zipped and to stay out of your yard. :sheep:

Problem solved. No, no need to thank me, happy to help.

Just don't forget that people are prone to report only unusual behavior. There are probably a hell of a lot more people whose animals aren't acting strange.

I would think that if animals were any kind of reliable earthquake predictor, we'd have earthquake prediction labs with a couple hundred animals with behavior under constant analysis. I'm actually kind of surprised I've never heard of anyone trying that.
