Multi-Fuel Generator

Greetings: I need some help.
Background: I've sold the old house with the 'whole house' 15kw natural gas generator. I'm not settled into a 'new' house so I'm not certain what 'energy' source I'll have access to. The question is:"Can anyone here recommend a portable, multi fuel generator over a single fuel [like a Honda 6500Kw] gasoline driven generator?" If I have to rent a house I will want to have a portable unit. I'm not real crazy about going 30 years into debt in a poor real estate market so portability is important as I shall, in all likelihood, be a renter for a year or two. I really need to have power to drive a medical devise... and keep the beer cold. :chg:

If you only need to run a small loads you can get those mini gennys. for way less than $200. Even Odd/Big lots had one.

Add a battery and an inverter and you'll really stretch you fuel all for under $300!

Fuzzy,
What kind of battery would you recommend? I know, everyone is different for needs, but I was wondering about brand, type, versus size.

Thank you one and all. Please keep your suggestions and Links coming in. I'm checking all of the information out. Buttie: what is a listerol generator? Is this a bio-fuel generator? :chg:

Well you really need one of these. You can be sure no one will run off with it in the middle of the night. Safer to store these fuels too.

I built a 2 cylinder version of this generator (12kw/20 hp) I can attest to the INCREDIBLE fuel efficiency. I start mine on diesel, and then switch over to Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO). It runs GREAT of heated WVO.

At a 8500 watt load, I burn about a quart and a half an hour of WVO, or 2 quarts of diesel.

These engines are simple, slow turning, and HEAVY. If you can weld and turn a wrench, you can build a setup like george shows on his website. (www.utterpower.com)

If you scrounge WVO from resturants, and build a heat exchanger for the WVO using coolant to heat the WVO, you can run nearly for free. If you do things right, you can use the heat of the coolant to move the foolant, no water pump needed...

I have operated for over 48 hours on WVO, at an average load of 5kw (more or less) and gotten fuel consumption of about a quart an hour.

The 2 cylinder setup will run without the base being anchored.

And the 2 cylinder is even easier on the ears.

Please do a TB search on "batteries, inverters" or "batteries, inverters, solar"

A Deep Cycle / Trolling battery -- Excide have done me well. Hopefully your genny will have a 12V out, make dang sure it does not out out more than 14.7V this is more than a 12v should be charged with. If it does you will need a charge controller.

Get an inverter much larger than you need, if your looking at the 100w vs 400w go with a 500/600w size. The price difference ain't that much any more and the bigger size ones can be used for more things. I'd get a spare inverter based on the prices.

The real question is what are you going to be running?

The best energy source is conservation!
