Anyone use it? Just found out about it. Seems like it is very heavy on fertilizer but I like the irrigation and the way rows are set up. Seems like it would be water efficient.

Me, I use a hydroponic mix but no where near what is used in the Mittleider system and no where near as often. I use a lot of organic matter also and other types of fertilizer like rock dust.

Mittleider Method - Watering System

florio (54)in #garden • 3 years ago
In my opinion, the most important step in doing the Mittleider Gardening system is the automatic watering system. My first year on the property, I didn't do that step and ended up not being able to water every day and plants died. This is the thing with gardening, you learn by experience - and sometimes you experience hardship.
So learn from me, do the watering system from the get-go. It's the most important step.
What is the Mittleider watering system? You run PVC pipes down your beds and you drill 3 holes every 4 inches and the water sprays out.

So for my setup, I ended up putting these water timers into manholes that I dug into the ground.

That was a mistake. This type of timer isn't geared toward being submerged. These holes will get totally filled with water if a heavy rain comes. I ended up redoing this and putting in a Hunter irrigation timer setup. Again, live and learn. If this were above ground, or you put this right at the spigot at your house, it would have worked great.
Anyway, good luck with your garden. It's highly important to give your plants the needed water, and doing the watering system is the way to go!

I don't use the method but I did treat my garden with the lime, borax and magnesium mixture this past spring and I think it really helped. I don't want to get the ph out of balance so will probably just keep it a once a year thing. Yes, I know it can be checked on a regular basis but I'm too busy for that.

When you apply soluble salts to soil, most of what you add will wash out quite quickly.Yeah, a little will hold on with cation exchange and soil life like bacteria will take some up but most will drain off.If you have trees some of the deep drain off will get taken up. This is why Mittleider is applying his mix weekly.

.....................................................................................................................................
Cation-exchange capacity is a measure of how many cations can be retained on soil particle surfaces. Negative charges on the surfaces of soil particles bind positively-charged atoms or molecules, but allow these to exchange with other positively charged particles in the surrounding soil water.
