Missing Hedge Fund Swindler Who Faked Suicide Turns Himself In
Wednesday, July 02, 2008

NEW YORK —

A missing hedge fund swindler who faked his own suicide turned himself in to Massachusetts authorities, FOX News has confirmed.

Samuel Israel surrendered to police in Southwick, Mass., about 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

Rebekah Carmichael, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia, said Israel is in federal custody. She would not immediately provide other details.

A nationwide alert had been out for Israel, 48, since June 9 — when he allegedly fled on the day he was to begin a 20-year prison sentence.

Israel etched a bizarre note that said only "suicide is painless" in dust on the hood of his SUV and left the vehicle on a New York City bridge over the Hudson River. Authorities were immediately suspicious, calling the faked suicide another of Israel's scams.

His girlfriend, Debra Ryan, was charged with aiding and abetting his escape. Israel was believed to have been living out of an RV while he was on the lam.

Israel was convicted and sentenced for bilking investors out of $450 million in hedge funds.
