I like to act like Im taunting the rooster, mainly to gig my wife, but the rooster was paying attention.

Yesterday I go outside, and the rooster is on a high board looking at me. I am 20 feet away. I flapped my arms against my side, then stuck my neck out and cocked my head.

Bully slapped his wings hard against his side and stuck his neck out.

I did it again. He did it again.

The third time, I flapped my arms, slapped my legs, clapped my hands and told him 'Beat that!'

Bully-Roo jumped three feet into the air iflapping in the classic attack pose, landed on his feet, kept beating his wings, and then crowed at me.

He won. I walked away, him crowing the entire time and my wife laughing her ass off.

I remember as a kid while visiting a southern uncle my younger brother and I went into the chicken run....after being told not to. This huge rooster can out of the hen house and started attacking me and my brother as we ran around the chicken yard trying to get away from him. Well my uncle heard the camotion and ran out of the house to rescue us. I made it out of the coop yard but when my uncle grabbed my brother and turned to leave that rooster spurred him bad in his legs.

Uncle sets my brother down and.stormed off to the house. A few seconds.later he came back outside loading his double barrel 12 gauge. He kicked open the chicken run door, brought up the shotgun and when that big rooster charged my uncle he gave it both barrels at point blank range. A huge boom and an explosion of feathers was all that was left of that rooster. My uncle never said a thing to us. Just gave us a.look and walked back inside to tend his still bleeding wounds.

That may have been one bad ass rooster but it was no match for the fury of my uncle. And my brother and I never ever went anywhere near the chicken coop again.

My roo is currently henpecked....literally! He caught his wattle on something to make it bleed [it's happened before] which matted his front with blood around his crop. The bleeding stopped on it's own but chickens being what they are the hens have started to peck at his wound and now the front of his crop is bare with no feathers and it's cold outside. I've watched the hens peck at him and I've seen him furiously peck back at them at times but there are four of them and only one of him. So he has made a bit of a nest for himself on the little which covers up his crop and he spends a lot of time during the day laying in that little bowl to keep his crop warm and the girls from pecking at him. How the mighty have fallen....he looks miserable.

Yeah....he's henpecked!!

What I have found is that simply defending from an aggressive rooster is not enough, attacking a recalcitrant rooster with a rusty two iron with the goal of bludgeoning it to death helps its little chicken brain understand the pecking order. And if they are not fast enough ... oh well there is room in the freezer.

Never let them win.

My roosters hang around long enough to get the incubator full of fertile eggs, then off with their heads.
More trouble than they are worth most of the year and hey - they are cheap to replace next year.

A *good tempered* rooster is worth a lot. We finally butchered the 5 year old Slow White roo last summer... he was starting to "sit" around (he weighed almost 15# live) and it was time for new blood. But he never acted aggressively towards peopke (extra important when you've got small grandchildren running around), and he was very protective of the hens.

OTOH, the first thing I thought about when reading the OP was a Buff Orpington roo who the menfolk loved to tease... he'd bounce off the chicken wire to try to get to them, and they thought it was great fun (teenage boys and a husband who should have known better... what can I say? You make your own fun on a farm).

But i went in to gather eggs one day, and when I bent down to look in a nest box, the roo blindsided me, spurring my face from the corner of my eye down to my jaw. Another 1/4 inch and I'd have lost the eye.

I marched into the house, confronted the teenage culprits and told them in no uncertain terms that I wanted that rooster kilked, cleaned and dressed while I patched up my face. He made a delicious pot of soup... and the men learned to not tease a rooster!

Rebel-Roo already tried that one. We had to turn him into soup before Bully killed him.

Or vice-versa. Bully tried to back out, Rebel wouldn't quit. So we picked the less aggressive one.

Our roo is good so far. No aggressive with us and fairly good to the ladies. He hasn’t done more than flap his wings at us. But, I don’t ever turn my back on him and won’t let my grandkids in the run with him just in case. I also tell him frequently that he will be soup if he attacks me.

Our roo is now fully rake-trained. He still likes to flap and crow when I come out the door.

He still wants to charge the wife.

But, go into the fenced area, pick up the plastic rake when he starts to charge...he backs up, and walks away. Wifey educated him a few times, and he got the memo.

Smart roo, he is.
Oh yeah, he's now a daddy. 4 chickies so far this week, and eggs still hatching. I named them already.

After a decade plus now, think we have breed all bad blooded (Roos that attack humans) out. Really right now we are down to only 14 hens and 3 roos. The roos have been fighting each other to the death (we had 5 roos and 40 hens on average for many years).

This last two years to today, we have let our flock die out and the critters have gotten their share, however we have also lowered the local chicken eating/killing critter population in the last two years bigly.

So this summer I'm re building the coop so I can simply run the tractor threw it once in awhile to clean it, and fortify it so no skunk, possum, raccoon, and other chicken killers can get in after I close them up in the evenings. Also building it in such a way that there is no snake hiding places
The rat snakes in our AO are over populated.

I turned around to look at him and he ruffles his neck feathers and flies up against me. I let him do it again and knocked him halfway across the coop. That kind of slows him down. Little prick!!

I just laugh. I’ve had full size blue/gold Macaw’s as pets. The hook bills on their maws can break fingers and lacerate to the bone. Earl the rooster doesn’t intimidate in the least. Might get a tennis racket though and see if he likes to be ‘served’.

Hubby was doing some repair work on our coop and the chickens were let to roam in the yard a bit. The roo came at hubby's back when he wasn't looking. Fortunately Hubby is very quick with his cane and laid that chicken our flat on his back. Hubby's worry was how he was going to tell me that he had killed my rooster. After half an hour, he stood that roo up on his feet and he just stood there and wobbled a bit. When it was time for them to go into the coop for the night, hubby lifted the roo and put him on his feet in the chicken house. The next morning the roo was not on the roosts but seemed lively enough. In time he got up on the roosts but forever after he was very shy around Hubby when that cane was in evidence!

We recently rehomed 3 roos - bantams, of all things - for just that reason. As small as they are, they can get some serious height when jumping up and they can be fierce. When one in particular came at me when I was bending to pick up eggs, that was it. He got too close to my eyes at least once a day, and started doing the same to DH. We warned the new homes, but they desperately wanted the bantam roos (two were d'Uccles, the other a beautiful cochin). Fine with us!

Unless we have a depression or TEOTWAWKI event, we will not have any more roos. Getting too old for that nonsense.

Little bugger never learns. My Mal is pretty good about making him pay for his transgressions though. She knows that she can't hurt him but when he comes after me she will run at him and chase him around and knock into him. That slows him down for awhile.....kind of. Stupid twerp!

All of our roos, it seems they get that string that comes from the feed bags or alike, tangled around their feet. So I have caught probably every roo we have had in the last decade plus.

Thinking that cures their bad attitude with me. Never had a roo seriously attack me. Do kill roos in front of the others though when one is a trouble maker or to rough on my hens.

I feel bad for my hens. I only have four right now but he’s wearing them down a lot. Haven’t seen him seal the deal too much but they are all disheveled on their backs and his favorite one has a real raw spot on her back. If he wasn’t such a good protector I’d turn him into soup.

I had a roo go after me once when I was bent over the in dog house collecting eggs. I couldn't see him with my head tucked inside, but I felt him pounce against my jeans, and I kicked out my foot as hard as I could. When I crawled out and looked for him, I realized that he was running around with only half a beak! That stupid bird never learned though; he wasn't around for much longer.

Well I got rid of my original Old English Game Roster yesterday as I wouldn't mix him with my other 7 Roos in the other hen house. I will keep four of the remaining rosters and eat the rest.

My Old Roster attacked the breeder I bought him from. He got a hiding and has never gone near me. None of my other rosters go me.
