For fair use ...

Newly minted Secretary of Defense James Mattis celebrated his first full day at the Pentagon by overseeing 31 strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Mattis entered the Pentagon Saturday with a smile for his first full day of work, and for good reason, considering the significant bombardment ISIS forces received.

A variety of fighters, bombers and remotely piloted aircraft engaged in the bombing run, which saw 25 strikes in Syria and six in Iraq. In Syria, two strikes destroyed ISIS units and artillery near the town of Bab. ISIS forces in Raqqa, the terrorist group’s de facto capital, took a heavy beating, as 22 strikes destroyed 12 tactical units, nine fighting positions, two underground improvised explosive bomb factories and an ISIS headquarters. The final strike targeted two ISIS oil wells in Deir ez Zour.

ISIS forces in Iraq suffered several casualties as well. One strike in the city of Rutbah destroyed a tactical unit and vehicle, two weapons caches and a mortar. Another in Beiji left a unit and vehicle destroyed. A strike in Kisik destroyed a building and tactical unit. Another in Tal Afar also destroyed a unit, truck and command node. The city of Mosul, which acts as the terrorist group’s regional capital in Iraq, received two strikes, which destroyed two units, three fighting positions, a tank, and a car bomb factory.

President Donald Trump promised during his campaign that he would destroy ISIS as quickly as possible. He said on his first day in office he would convene his top generals and order them to provide a plan to eradicate ISIS once and for all within 30 days. As the new head of the Pentagon, Mattis would be expected to enact whatever plan goes forward. The former Marine general is a known critic of the Obama administration’s ISIS policy, having once referred to it as full of “half measures.”

I wonder how many innocent civilians were killed.

Mostly ones that ISIS uses as human shields by hiding behind them.

You really need to read up on what happens in war.

Our side actually tries much harder than our enemies to not harm civilians- often to the point of putting our troops in danger, a policy which I totally disagree with....

I would like to believe under Trump/Mattis, the rules of engagement will be brought closer to what should be. Put American Service Personnel first!

When your enemy uses civilians as shields the ONLY way to stop that is to ignore the civilians and thus nullify their effectiveness completely. It might sound cold, but it is the only thing that works and in the long run saves civilian lives.

We have to go after ISIS sooooo hard and soooo viciously that no civilian will allow them within a thousand yards of them. That any assistance no matter how slight could cost them their and their families lives. When any involvement is a sure and final death sentence....this group will ultimately die off.

If people have been reading the foreign press, they realize the Syrians and Russians and Hezzbollah have been making MULTIPLE REPORTS OF MASS GRAVES OUTSIDE OF ALEPPO. We are talking about THOUSANDS OF ROTTING CORPSES HERE, MAYBE EVEN TENS OF THOUSANDS.

What do you think happened to all the captured Iraqi and Syrian soldiers? What do you think ISIS did with the civilians that fell into their hands? We are looking at Nazi level war crimes. Babi yar in Russia. Katlyn Forest in Poland.

ISIS IS EVIL. If we bombed every civilian in both Iraq and Syria, which we aren't, we wouldn't kill one percent of the people ISIS has murdered since 2014.

the Russians.

Okay, it was Stalin and the Russians who executed the thousands of Polish officers at the Katalyn Forest. Still, ISIS throws gays off of parking garage roofs. They train five year old kids to shoot captives. They burn Jordanian Air Force Pilots alive, aka the wicker man by the Druids. They use mass rape as a tactic. They have murdered, raped, tortured and beheaded their way from one end of Syria and Iraq to the other.

ISIS has to go. Let Mattis do the job he was trained for. Trump isn't the spineless, gutless, traitor Obama. Mattis is going to do more to destroy ISIS in the next two weeks than Obama did the full eight years.

There must have been some coordination with the Russians to ensure everybody stated away from each other in the skies.

Food for thought. I honestly believe that Barry was, is and continue to be a closet mudslime. He did more to help ISIS than hinder them. In fact I believe that Barry is in fact very responsible for both the creation of ISIS and the mudslime immigrant issues both here in the states and in Europe. I'm sure everyone in the upper levels of the military and intelligence community in this country knew it as well. With Trump and Mad Dog leading this fight I would not be surprised to see some radical improvements in this war now that the kid gloves have been removed and warriors are back in charge of the fight.

I would love to see Barry ultimately arrested and tried for treason for his assistance to ISIS...the bastard!

the most difficult thing in fighting ISIS, hamas, hezbollah, al nusra, palestinians, etc, etc, etc is their using civilians for shields, including schools, hospitals, camps, it is what they do so they can jump up and down point, rant and rave and accuse us of killing civilians, theyve been doing it to israel since day one, so trying to kill the enemy hiding under civilians without killing too many civilians is pretty frigging difficult. the enemy counts on our hesitation, guilt feelings and unwillingness to fight like them.

THEY are the ones killing the civilians. it is ugly, brutal, evil but they have to be stopped. it is like having a little bit of cancer. if you dont go after it aggressively it spreads deeper and wider causing more damage.

I'd bet a Marine General took have a plan to get rid of isis in 30 days to mean get rid of isis in 30 days.

Sounds like it is stared already.

When a Marine is tasked to do something, even the supposedly impossible, it gets done. Sooner rather than later.

Isis would be advised to find a deep hole, crawl in and pull the dirt in behind them and never more be heard from.

Wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to find out this has been in the works for a few weeks.

I've had a suspicion for years that our military is in closer contact with the Russian military than they would want us to believe.

And once ISIS is pulverized, then the myriad other Islamic jihad outfits both armed and those using "lawfare" can got targeted.

I said a couple days ago that Trump turned loose the dogs of war.........well, Mad Dog is definitely a hound of the bloodhound variety and he is doing what he was told to do. Kill ISIS........!

Has anyone noticed that we aren't calling ISIS, ISIL anymore? Hmmm......... Love that too. More PC bullpoop flushed down the drain.

Going to be an exciting 8 years folks. Da Man with the big set is in charge now instead of the one who wears leopard spots on his tights......
Bout time we got a REAL man in the Whitehouse. Not a muzzie kissing whimp.

There will be no more bowing and sniveling. Not on Trump's watch. That ended at 12 noon Friday the 20th of January, 2017.......Hallelujah!

No mention of what the legitimately elected Syrian government, nor their Russian allies, think of this apparent incursion onto Syrian sovereign soil by western forces.

And, no definition of what constitutes "ISIS" forces - in the past, what countries have supported this "ISIS" with intel/targeting/funding/logistics tail? Turkey? Israel? U.S.A.? Saudi Arabia?

How many years have we been at war in the Middle East? Can we just get 'er done and get the hell out of that shit hole? We are fighting the elite's economic battles for pipelines. F'em. Our armed forces are not mercenaries. "American interests" are not the interests of a few wealthy people and corporations or the interests of Yemen and the Saudis. Our forces should either protect the American people or we are outta there.

U.S., Coalition Continue Strikes Against ISIL in Syria, Iraq

From a Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve News Release

SOUTHWEST ASIA, Jan. 22, 2017 — U.S. and coalition military forces continued to attack Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists in Syria and Iraq yesterday, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials reported today.

Officials reported details of yesterday’s strikes, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.

Strikes in Syria

Attack, bomber, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft conducted 25 strikes consisting of 39 engagements in Syria:

-- Near Bab, two strikes engaged an ISIL tactical unit, destroyed an artillery piece and damaged a tactical vehicle.

-- Near Raqqa, 22 strikes engaged 12 ISIL tactical units; destroyed nine fighting positions, two tunnels, two tanks an improvised-bomb factory and an ISIL headquarters; and suppressed three ISIL tactical units.

-- Near Dayr Az Zawr, a strike destroyed two oil well heads.

Strikes in Iraq

Attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft conducted six strikes consisting of 16 engagements in Iraq, coordinated with and in support of the Iraqi government:

-- Near Rutbah, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a tactical vehicle, two weapons caches and a mortar.

-- Near Beiji, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle.

-- Near Kisik, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle and an ISIL-held building.

-- Near Mosul, two strikes engaged two ISIL tactical units; destroyed a vehicle-borne-bomb factory, a vehicle-borne bomb, a tank, three fighting positions and a vehicle; and suppressed an ISIL tactical unit.

-- Near Tal Afar, a strike engaged an ISIL tactical unit and destroyed a semi-truck and a command-and-control node.

Task force officials define a strike as one or more kinetic events that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative, effect. Therefore, officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIL vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against buildings, vehicles and weapon systems in a compound, for example, having the cumulative effect of making those targets harder or impossible for ISIL to use. Accordingly, officials said, they do not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target. Ground-based artillery fired in counterfire or in fire support to maneuver roles is not classified as a strike.

Part of Operation Inherent Resolve

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat it poses to Iraq, Syria, the region and the wider international community. The destruction of targets in Syria and Iraq further limits ISIL's ability to project terror and conduct operations, officials said.

Coalition nations that have conducted strikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Coalition nations that have conducted strikes in Syria include the United States, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
