Garen and Bekka’s Workshop, Later
Garen and Kara were standing around one of the large tables looking at maps and papers, comparing them to the ones on the wall.
“That was a slick trick those two pulled off.” Kara said from beside the wall map.
“Slick, off the cuff, dicey, thin margin for error, dangerous, and I forget what else Bekka called it.”
“Reckless, I think was the word she used over and over as she chewed them out. I am not sure if she was mad or proud of them. You got to tell her to go easy on those two. Let them stretch their wings. Not get so angry with them all the time.” Kara chimed in.
Garen replied as his finger traced the map on the table changing the subject. “Put some blue dots on the houses up off of 17. A couple of us can go out that way and see if anybody is still there, then if not and there’s enough to make it worthwhile, call back for the load up vehicles like last time.”
Their latest plan was to use the electric bicycles to do the reconnaissance since they were virtually silent and only bring in a truck to load up stuff. The first time, it was Bekka and Garen on the bikes to a farm not too far away. They watched the place for a full day, including thermals at night, then moved in once they were sure it was empty.
It was a pretty good haul they brought back from there. With no signs of owners, and no signs anyone had been there for weeks or months, they didn’t feel bad taking the stuff they found. Boxes of stuff from the kitchen, from food to canning supplies, to old cooking supplies like cast iron, stock pots and so forth.
They took anything they thought they might need. Bedding, towels, clothes, soap, it all got loaded up. On one of the later trips, Kara and Angelique grabbed all the old books they found while Garen stripped the barn of tools. One of the best finds was some more of the IBC totes, the poly containers in a cage that have replaced drums for bulk fluid storage almost everywhere.
He loaded up one of the heavy duty trailers they brought back from the center with half a dozen, then they pumped the heating oil from the house into the tanks. This would solve their fuel problems for a little longer.
“Who’s doing the initial look see this time? You and Bekka again?”
“I don’t know. Allyson and Angelique just pulled a trip, so it’s you, me and Bekka to choose from unless we want to get some of the others involved.”
“I don’t know. Doug and Heidi are trying to help Jessie stay on top of that maternity ward they have going on over there at Zeds. If one of those three want a break, one of us should fill in for them.”
“Well, I could go over and…” Garen started to say.
“You guys aren’t going anywhere right now.” came Bekka’s declaration from the doorway.
They both turned and looked at Bekka.
“Kara, run and grab the girls. We have a new mission we need to plan and run right now.”
“What’s up?”
“Odina called in her marker. Her and her kids are in the forest, looking for the link up.”
“Shit.”
