Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
It was a quiet little spot they found to stop for food. The meal wasn’t much, just some reheated leftovers combined with some rice, but it would be enough fuel for them until the next morning. The whole thing was to eat some, drive a bit more then stop for a good several hour power nap. Depending on the weather and any other issues, they should roll into Penguins late tomorrow afternoon-ish.

Kara and Heidi were sitting outside next to the vehicle, just enjoying the night air before getting back underway.

“Do you think the weather is going to hold off or are we gonna get hit with it before we get to Penguins?” Heidi asked.

“We have a distance to go still, but it feels like rain soon.” Kara answered.

They were both taking the few moments to rest their eyes. There was enough moonlight right now to see without their goggles, which was nice. The goggles were hard on the eyes and could lead to headaches, eye fatigue and other issues. The more they did without them, the better the both of them figured they were.

Heidi heard Kara sit up quickly. She opened her eyes to look around, wondering at Kara’s sudden movement.

“Kara?”

Kara was staring at her now, a strange glint in her eyes.

“Heidi, you wearing one of the varsity t-shirts?”

“Yeah?” This was a strange time to ask such a question. Before Heidi could ask more, Kara started talking again.

“Take your jacket off, tie it around your waist so it hangs over your pistol.” Kara was doing the same thing with hers.

“Huh?” she asked as she did it but Kara continued.

“We are about to have visitors. You are my 15 year old little sister, shy and scared. Hide your face with your hair and be ready to shoot when I start things, but not until.”

Heidi wanted to ask something, but the look in Kara’s eyes stopped her. So did the next thing Kara said.

“I hope you are as good with that pistol as I think you are.”

The three visitors stumbled up to them, trying to be quick and stealthy, which in their mind they were.

“Hey! Will you look at what we found?” the middle one of the group said.

“Yeah, a couple of lost girls out here in the wilderness. It’s good we came along when we did. It gets dangerous out here.” The older one in the lead said.

Their voices sent shivers crawling up Heidi’s spine. She was looking through her hair hanging down loose in front of her bowed head. She tried to see how Kara was reacting to them, but the angle wasn’t quite right for a good look. Then Kara spoke.

“Good evening. You are a little late for dinner, but I think we have a little more if you want. It isn’t much, just some ramen with chicken bouillon and gravy, but it’s all we have.”

Kara had a bit, just a touch, of a tremor in her voice from what Heidi could tell. It sounded just about right. Enough to make them understand her and Kara felt startled so if they were fine upstanding people, they would probably try to set them at ease or something. Those hopes were dashed when the third person spoke.

“Two pretty girls? I was hoping for some entertainment more than I was food.”

Heidi hoped the flush of rage in her face would be mistaken for embarrassment or something else. How far was this going to go before Kara started things? Heidi started doing the geometry in her head of who to shoot when and in what order.

“Guys……Let’s not do this, ok?” Kara’s voice was halfway between a request and a pleading.

“What’s wrong with a little entertainment? We will make sure to share.” The older one said.

Heidi was watching Kara intently the best she could at this point, waiting for the go code. ‘How far was she going to let them get before we stop it’ she screamed in her head.

Kara very deliberately looked over at Heidi. While her head was turned away from the visitors, she mouthed ‘Wait’ to Heidi before she turned around.

“Guys? Look, can I make a deal with you?” Kara’s words were coming out all in a rush, full of nervous energy, fear and desperation. “I’ll do whatever you want, willingly, even enthusiastically for as long as you want, and you leave my little sister alone.”

Kara was up on her knees now and moved ahead of Heidi towards the older one who seemed to be leading them.

The three visitors looked at one another. Heidi swore she could see the thought bubbles over their heads.

Asshole #1- What do you think?

Asshole #2- Willing is more fun. What do you think?

Asshole #3- If we don’t like what she does, we can always go back to force.

When was Kara going to make her move? The group seemed to come to a consciences. The leader looked back at Kara.

“I like a girl with enthusiasm. Let’s see what you got.”

He kind of squared up to Kara who was already on her knees about five feet in front of him.

“And you leave my sister alone?” Kara asked again, for conformation.

When the leader nodded, Kara reached for the hem of her t-shirt. At this point, Heidi almost drew her pistol before she saw Kara was taking off her t-shirt, not drawing on them.

The leader was now gazing down at Kara’s naked chest, her tiny barbells glinting in the moonlight. She shuffled forward and reached for his pants. He unzipped and she pulled his trousers and underwear down, exposing his attentive manhood.

Heidi saw a kabuki-style look of surprise and amazement as Kara tentatively reached out with one hand. As she grasped his equipment, she looked up at the leader, a smile on her face. He smiled back at her and widened his stance for balance.

Heidi was so transfixed wondering when Kara would signal she almost missed the beginning of Kara’s move.

The leader suddenly bent forward as if jump leapfrog style over Kara in front of him. He was held in place by Kara’s grip on his manhood. Before the weird gurgling choked squeaking scream registered, Heidi’s pistol was out and tracking. Three rounds into number two’s face was followed by three rounds to number three’s face before Heidi turned towards number one, collapsed beside Kara who was furiously pumping a long thin five inch blade into and out of his ribcage and neck.

There was a certain manicness about Kara’s actions. It was like watching a five year old try to kill ants with an icepick before they got to him. Five, ten, fifteen, Heidi didn’t know how many times Kara stabbed him.

“Kara, you got him.” Heidi softly said.

Heidi saw Kara slow, then slump. Kara was looking down at her hand, the one with the knife in it. She looked over her shoulder at Heidi. Her voice was real tired when she spoke.

“That noise is going to bring attention. Strip them of weapons and tools. I want to get out of here in two minutes or less.”

Kara wiped her blade off with some of the guy’s shirt. A quick pat of his pockets revealed some loose items like a zippo, a pocket knife and a few other things Kara didn’t take the time to identify.

Heidi grabbed belt knives, pistols and long guns from the three assholes and threw them in the back of the Suburban. She looked over at Kara. Kara was putting her t-shirt back on slowly, like she was a hundred years old. Kara looked over at Heidi.

“Can you drive for a bit? I’m a little tired.”

“Sure, let’s go.”

Heidi went around to the driver’s seat. It took a moment to slide the seat up into position for Heidi. This gave Kara time to get in the passenger seat and get ready to go.

A little ways down the road, Heidi had to ask.

“How did you know they were coming so far out? Did you see them or what?”

Kara’s voice sounded like it was a hundred miles away when she answered.

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?” Now Heidi was confused. “You had to know something to give as much warning as you did, to have a plan like you did.”

Kara’s explanation started haltingly. “You know that movie with Downey Jr in it as Sherlock, where he sees a whole bunch of outcomes before him like a movie in his head and he tries out all the options and picks the one with the results that work best?”

“Yeah? I know the one.” Heidi thought this was sounding incredible.

“Well, it’s nothing like that.” Kara’s denial was so sudden, it made Heidi and then Kara laugh.

“I really don’t know. Sometimes I have things pop into my head; a phrase, a picture, an emblem like the one for my tattoo, or a religious verse. I had a whole speech for Terry’s funeral show up in my head evidently. I don’t remember it, but everyone else told me it was beautiful and inspired and eloquent. I don’t know.”

Heidi could see Kara was disturbed by the whole conversation but Kara continued.

“It’s like when you were wanting to know about the tattoo. I had no real answer other than it appeared, first in my head, and I put it on paper, then my head or my heart told me to put it on my body.”

Heidi figured she should shift the conversation over to more practical and less existential things.

“So how far were you going with him before you started the fight?”

“I needed them to be thinking about what they thought I was going to do for them and forget you were there. I wasn’t sure how far I would have to go to get them to that place in their heads. That’s why I took off my shirt. People like to stare at tits, even ones as small as mine. If they were looking at my tits or my face, they weren’t watching my other hand. When he widened his stance, which showed me he was committed to what I was going to do to him, at least in his mind, I had him. He couldn’t get to anything on his belt or in his pants, they were at his ankles and he couldn’t back away, I had his dick in my hand. I took my get off me knife and went straight up between his balls and his asshole a half a dozen times before he fell over and to the side. I followed him down to keep him out of the fight and to stay out of your line of fire.”

They rode in silence for some time, both trying to recover in their own ways.

Kara was correct. Heidi is. Three bad guys permanently down.

It was the middle of the night. Bekka reached over to the other side of the bed but Garen wasn’t there. Instead, her hand landed on the furry form of Hemdal, his musical half purr half meow helping her identify him. She got up, curious now. First she went to the bathroom. No one there. Where is he?

In the living room, she saw Zed sitting at the radio desk, his turn on watch.

“Have you seen Garen?”

Zed looked up from the book he was reading.

“He went downstairs about an hour ago.”

Bekka headed downstairs. At the bottom of the stairs, she could see the light was on in the workshop. When she got closer, she could hear soft music and some metallic clanking and clicking. Standing in the door, she saw Garen with several boxes of ammo out on one table and a stack of magazines. There were more on another table.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

Garen looked up at her. His face had a look she recognized and it worried her. It was a look of…of…well she didn’t know how to describe it. Not worry or anticipation or panic per say. Concern maybe?

“Yeah, I was thinking too much to sleep and figured to do something useful with it.”

“Like what?”

“Well, I remembered another bin with AK mags and stuff so Doug would have more ammo available if you two go out the door.”

“He already has a full set of webbing, plus a second full set for his webbing in the Subaru. If he needs more than that, we have much bigger problems.”

The hair on the back of Bekka’s neck was starting to stand up. Garen kept explaining.

“Well, I was mainly building more to go into the Beast, because if we roll that, then more might be needed. I also found an RPK seventy-five round drum for him to start with.”

Bekka could see the sense in that, but she didn’t like Garen feeling like it might be necessary. It was time to say something.

“Are you getting some sort of feeling this all might be needed?”

“I don’t know.” Garen said with a sigh. “I don’t know what’s going on. You know me. I dig out one little improvement or detail and one thing leads to another and before you know it, half the kitchen is getting remodeled or a motorcycle is torn down to the frame and I have a paint can in my hands.”

“I know, but this feels different.” Bekka’s face was the one with the worried expression now.

“Oh, the long skinny bag over there has three more bandoleers for your long gun. I have a second bag like it already in the Beast.”

Three hundred MORE rounds for her long gun! She already had that much in the Subaru and he knows it. He’s adding that much again? He is worried about something or feels something or knows something.

“You’re worried. Why?”

“I don’t know. You and I worked everything out on who should go with who and why but a part of me still thinks it would be better if it was me beside you and not Doug. It’s not anything about Doug, either. It’s just” he seemed to stick on the words. “If anything was to happen and I wasn’t there, I would hate myself for not being there to help, stop, fix, rescue, save or whatever.”

Now Bekka understood some.

“I know, but nothing is going to happen I think. Heidi and Kara are taking some fuel to Jesse’s granddaughter and will drive back with them. Meanwhile we will sit here screwing ourselves into the ceiling with worry until they get back. You should finish up and get some sleep.”

“Let me get some of the boxes closed up and I’ll be right up.”

Bekka leaned in and kissed him. She knew closing up boxes and stuff meant he would be down here at least another half an hour and it won’t go faster with her standing there.

Dawn saw Allyson and Angelique in the kitchen cooking breakfast for everyone. This was something they could do without going too far or taking too long to disentangle themselves from.

“So, cards, reading, napping? What do you want to do this morning?” Angelique said as she stirred the scrambled eggs.

“I don’t know. I was thinking laundry and napping.” Was Allyson’s reply. She was getting the rest of the ingredients for breakfast ready.

Breakfast was kind of turn over time for people. Some were finishing up and going to bed, others were just getting up, all of them were in some kind of limbo, waiting to hear more over the radio. So far, the only stuff over the radio was periodic alphanumeric transmissions on the channel set aside for movement tracking. So far, everything was moving as predicted on the map.

Everyone was looking forward to this evening when Heidi and Kara should arrive at Penguin’s. Then they will get a good sitrep and find out any modifications to the return timeline. One potential factor is the intermittent thunderstorms starting to roll through. What effect that is going to play remains to be seen.

Sometimes you have to listen to the little voices in the back of your head, and never know if it was necessary. Sometimes you ignore them and end up kicking yourself, later.
I was never flexible enough to literally kick my self but there is a divot in my forehead from the closest hard surface I could find; I'm sure everyone on here can identify with your post. Well, those of us who survived, anyway.

CCG - what can I say? This never disappoints.

Kara was worn out when they stopped for their planned nap. It makes sense. It was very stressful and she put out a great deal of energy in the fight. She was always tired whenever a vision? Precognition? Whatever you want to call it, happens. She looked over at Heidi. She still seemed to be full of energy. Good, Kara thought. She can keep watch some and maybe drive a bit more when they started back up if she didn’t bounce back enough.

Heidi sat with Kara as Kara slept. She kept replaying the event and the talk with Kara afterwards. Some of what Kara said made sense to her. She had experienced similar things but not to this extent. She looked at Kara as she slept. Kara looked different now compared to just a couple hours ago.

She could still see Kara on her knees in front of her, luring the leader to his doom. The placating look on her face as she was doing whatever it takes to protect her ‘sister’, then the complete fury and rage as she plunged the knife into him over and over again, and different yet again when it was all over.

Heidi started warming up some water for coffee. Once the coffee was ready, she would wake Kara up, they had to get moving. The rain might slow them down some.

Just realized “Archangel” is going to be Heidi and a mostl likely HIGHLY pissed off Kara… the Sheriff and his posse of assholes aren't going to know what hits them.
I'm sure they'll recognise a shit storm as it rolls over them because I'm betting H&K (wonder if CCG planned that juxtaposition? Or, am I weirder than I thought? I remember thinking of that as the teams were coming together.) will have some backup?

There's a serious amount of motivated combat effectives not far off w/ the means to rapidly close the gap.

Seat belts on! Chair backs to the up right position! We're about to encounter turbulence!

The morning was grey and bleak. Intermittent rain had kept visibility low but not horrible. Heidi was back in the passenger seat now. Kara’s energy seemed to have returned. Their conversations wandered all over the place as they drove. Sometimes it was music, other times, movies, almost always something lighthearted, almost.

“So, I’ve decided to give it a go with Doug when we get back.”

“Give it a go or something serious?” Kara responded.

“Serious if he will have me. He deserves serious.”

“And what about you? You deserve serious as well.” Kara looked over at Heidi.

“It’s been a long time since something serious for me. I’m not sure I know how, but I’m willing to try.”

Kara could hear the hesitancy and the conviction in Heidi’s voice.

“Both of you, it’s been a long time. Just be true, honest and yourselves. It will work.”

Heidi could hear it in Kara’s voice. She really believed what she was saying. She really thought her and Doug could work. She looked at the road sign they just passed and back at her map.

“Hey, take the turn off here. This is the overlook to the little valley Penguin is in. We should be able to raise them on the radio.”

Ten minutes later, they were at an overlook pull out perched on the side of a small valley. Down below was a small town and a bunch of small farms. The view was partially obscured by patches of rain moving through the valley.

“Cool. They should be at the far end of the valley past that rain squall.” Heidi pointed down the hill.

Kara pulled up their radio reference pages and flipped switches on one of the radios.

“Let’s get this show on the road. I could use a shower and a meal.” Kara said as she pulled up the radio mic.

“Sprout, Blade 23 Inbound, do you copy?”

Nothing.

“Sprout, Blade 23 Inbound, do you copy?”

Nothing. Kara checked the settings and adjusted a few.

“Sprout, Blade 23 Inbound, do you copy?”

Nothing

“Sprout, Blade 23 Inbound, do you copy?”

Finally they got a reply from a somewhat panicked sounding voice over the radio.

“Blade 23, this is Sprout! Thank God!”

Kara looked over at Heidi

“What the ****?”

Kara keyed the radio.

“Sprout, what’s up? What’s your situation?” Kara was looking at the radio as if trying to command more information through sheer force of will.

The voice came back all in a rush.

“The locals have us barricaded in and trying to take us out. Please tell me you can help!” The voice had it all; worry, urgency, and even a bit of fear and desperation.

Kara was sitting upright now. Heidi was checking her gear subconsciously, tightening belts and checking the position of her pistol. Kara responded.

“We should be able to do something. How many enemy and how are they armed?”

Heidi could hear the same all business tone in Kara now as she had last night when she set her into motion before the raiders arrived.

“Over 30 people I think. They hit us last night, took out the main antenna and some of the friendlies. We have wounded as well, including our medic who is down hard. Enemy is limited to small arms for weapons as far as we can tell.”

The voice on the radio was a little more in control now. The situation sounded bad. Heidi’s mind was going down a dozen different paths of what could we do.

Kara was trying to figure out what they could do as well. Her first thought was swoop in and speed away or something like that. First she had to know how many needed to escape.

“Copy. How many for Evac?”

“Huh?”

The reply from the radio caught her off guard. She exploded there in the Suburban to Heidi.

“What was so Mother****en hard about my question?”

Before Heidi could reply to her question, Kara was back on the radio, her tone hard and demanding.

“How many bodies need to evacuate from your perimeter. Focus!”

The voice paused a moment then replied.

“11 for Evac. 5 to 7 additional seats if you’re still bringing fuel, including two litter patients.”

Kara stared at the radio before she replied.

“Copy, Wait one.”

Kara looked at Heidi.

“There are too many to do a snatch and grab. And their medic is down. And it sounds like they only had one medic.”

Heidi could see it in her face. She knew the answer as well.

“Go in, hold the line, and call the cavalry? Because I can’t go back and tell Jesse we just walked away.” Heidi asked to confirm she was on board with the idea.

“Yeah, start figuring what we can do to get there while I make the call.” Kara said as she flipped switches on the radio.

Kara took a big deep breath and started talking again.

“ATC, this is Blade 23.”

“This is ATC, go Blade 23.” Garen’s voice came over the radio.

Kara breathed a sigh of relief since it was Garen on the radio. With either him or Bekka, she could shorthand better.

“ATC, Blade 23 in contact with Sprout. Mission Change, I say again, Mission Change. Blade 23 is terminating the planned refueling mission at this time and initiating CSAR protocol. How Copy?”

Kara could almost see everyone in the living room jumping to their feet, silent and focused on the speaker.

“Blade 23, ATC, Understand terminating refueling mission and initiating CSAR Protocol. What do you need from us, Blade 23?”

Kara and Heidi could hear the focus and concern in Garen’s voice. Kara wasn’t sure what they would need but when she replied, the words just came out.

“ATC, Sprout is Alamo. We need Seats for 11 counting ours and we need Athena, Thor and a Rampart box.”

“Copy. Wait one.”

Kara was almost in tears when she heard the tone of voice in Garen’s reply. It took her all the way back to the bad old days.

While they were waiting, Kara and Heidi started powwowing.

“This thing isn’t fast and can’t turn or dodge with all this fuel on board, so what are our options?” Kara started.

“Well, if they are just civilians and haven’t seen much , we can kind of sneak up closer with the rain and shock and awe them at the last minute to pop through their perimeter, get close to the house and bolt in.” was Heidi’s first suggestion.

“Sounds good. How much ammo did you bring for your big toy?”

“Enough for shock and awe, not enough for a real sustained firefight. It burns through ammo at a horrible speed.” Heidi answered.

“OK, and I figure you in the rear sunroof for that and I can add some distraction and worry as well. I have about ten of those twelve gauge bird bombs for the shotgun. They won’t hurt shit but they will go about a hundred to two hundred feet and blow up like an airburst.”

“That can help, they might think they are getting shelled or something.” Heidi was smiling a grim smile now.

“Alright, let’s get all of this ready and as much ammo and gear we can easily bolt into the house with ready.”

The radio crackled again with Garen back on the line.

“Blade 23, Crusader flight, Viking 6 and Scarlet 38 are outbound to your location. Keep us in the loop for anything else you need.”

Kara took another big breath and settled herself again before keying the radio.

“Copy ATC, Glad to hear it! We may have to Son Tay and go all Rourke’s Drift to keep things viable. Transferring over to CSAR protocol at this time.”

Kara looked over at Heidi.

“Don’t forget, we are moving over to the odd numbered channels on the radio for everything now.” Kara flipped a switch and keyed the mic again.

“Sprout, do what you can to button up and stay alive. Get people and things ready to move fast if you can. Don’t you ****ing quit on us! Help is on its way!”

Heidi looked at Kara who was blankly staring at the silent radio for a moment.

“Son Tay? Rourke’s Drift?” Heidi asked

“Garen will understand. For the Son Tay POW camp raid, to get the raiders in quick as a group, they deliberately crashed a helicopter into the compound. Rourke’s Drift? About 200 British troops held off about ten to twenty thousand Zulu warriors in a siege. That battle had the most Victoria Crosses awarded of any battle in history. Garen will understand. Basically I told him we are smashing our way into the perimeter and holding out for the reinforcements.”

“Well I guess that makes sense.” Heidi replied, a little muted as she started to think on the ramifications.

“Here’s the other part,” Kara said “This is defending a fixed base. That means once we get in, this will be your baby to run. I have no experience or training for this type of work and it sounds like they have wounded to worry about and no medic as well. When we hit the ground, you are in charge, just tell me what you need if I’m not swamped playing lifeguard.”

“Great!” Heidi said, the sarcasm dripping from her tone.

“Don’t forget, Heidi, we have backup coming. I’ve ridden with Allyson when she is on a rescue mission, they will be here in four or five hours. You’ve ridden with Bekka, and she will have to work really hard to keep up with Allyson. When you are planning your defense, start thinking about after we stabilize things, where and what we can do with three very good snipers from six hundred or more yards out.”

Kara could see Heidi doing all the calculations in her head.

“Remember. First shock and awe to get in, then we stabilize, then hold until our reinforcements arrive.” Kara reiterated.

The next twenty minutes were a chaotic jumble of gear and ammo and bags and positioning.

Heidi tied a loop of webbing to the cargo rails in the roof and draped them across and into the open rear sunroof to help her brace herself while she was standing up. She clipped several cans of belted ammo together where she could grab them when they got to the house. She knew she would use one or two cans up just getting to the house. A thirteen hundred round cyclic rate will do that.

Kara was getting both her med bag and Heidi’s junior med bag ready for her to grab. She was also going to grab her own bail out bag too, quite a load. Hopefully they would find a close point to park and not have to run far or fast.

The stubby semiauto shotgun was in her lap. She sorted the special twelve gauge rounds she brought. She had just enough for one full load of six. She could make it look good for a few moments as they breached the line. Kara looked up at Heidi in the sunroof and the machine gun in front of her. Heidi’s face looked different to her now. It was set in a grim determination.

“Are we set?” Kara asked Heidi.

“Yeah, let’s go.” She replied.

The closer they got, and the darker it got, the slower they went. It felt like forever but in reality, it was only about a half an hour later, in the middle of a downpour, they were close enough to orient themselves on their final objective. They picked their line, the approach, Heidi’s targets and where Kara was going to play baby morterman and drop the high explosive noisemakers.

“Well, are we ready?” Kara asked finally.

“Yeah, I think so.” Heidi charged her gun.

“We will get through this, my sister. You make the radio call, I’ll start rolling.”

Kara’s focus was fully on her route and target as she heard Heidi on the radio.

“Sprout, Keep your heads down. One minute out. Danger close, 290 true. Archangel, Inbound HOT!”

Don't fret Kiwi - when we get the book, it'll be just as good and, we'll be able to turn the page, not twist in the wind.
If anyone takes a beta blocker, maybe get one ready. :)

CCG: it took a while but :applaud::applaud: so worth the wait!
Now, the real story begins I think.

They were just cleaning up after lunch when the radio squawked. Garen was sitting at the radio desk having another cup of coffee.

“ATC, this is Blade 23.” Kara’s voice came over the radio. It wasn’t sounding right to Garen. It sounded clipped and curt.

“This is ATC, go Blade 23.” Garen had a pencil in his hand, ready to make notes.

“ATC, Blade 23 in contact with Sprout. Mission Change, I say again, Mission Change. Blade 23 is terminating the planned refueling mission at this time and initiating CSAR protocol. How Copy?”

The room went dead silent. Everyone was looking at the radio now. Everyone that is, except Bekka. Garen saw out of the corner of his eye, Bekka was franticly putting on her plate carrier. Garen started reflexively writing notes as he spoke on the radio

“Blade 23, ATC, Understand terminating refueling mission and initiating CSAR Protocol. What do you need from us, Blade 23?” All ears were tuned, waiting wondering what they needed to do, what to grab, how to help.

“ATC, Sprout is Alamo. We need Seats for 11 counting ours and we need Athena, Thor and a Rampart box.”

All kinds of stuff went racing through Garen’s head at the request. He looked over to the group. Allyson and Angelique were on their feet now, starting towards the door.

“Copy. Wait one.” Garen acknowledged Kara on the radio, he had things to get moving. He looked over at Allyson and Angelique.

“Take Emilia for the gate. Bekka and Doug will be right behind you. Zed, Jesse, throw the tan case over there” He pointed to a box under one of the pinball machines “into Bekka’s Subaru”

The next few minutes were full of frantic movement. Just before Bekka walked out the door, Garen stopped her.

“Zed, Jesse, Emilia and I will get the Beast ready to roll as a medivac if you guys need it. We will be ready. You be smart and a little careful, OK?”

“We got this. Kara is probably just being careful.” Bekka lied.

“Go do what you need to. I love you.”

“I love you too.” A quick kiss and she was gone.

Five minutes later, Emilia was on the radio.

“Gate secure, team outbound.”

Garen was back to the radio desk now.

“Blade 23, Crusader flight, Viking 6 and Scarlet 38 are outbound to your location. Keep us in the loop for anything else you need.”

Jesse and Zed walked into the room just in time for Kara’s reply.

“Copy ATC, Glad to hear it! We may have to Son Tay and go all Rourke’s Drift to keep things viable. Transferring over to CSAR protocol at this time.”

Garen saw the frequency switch back. He heard Kara’s demanding and insistent tone going out to presumably Jesse’s granddaughter.

“Sprout, do what you can to button up and stay alive. Get people and things ready to move fast if you can. Don’t you ****ing quit on us! Help is on its way!”

Garen heard the power of Kara’s proclamation, trying by force of will to make everything OK. He wished there was more he could do right this very moment.

“Alamo, Son Tay and go all Rourke’s Drift? What did she mean by that., what all did I not understand?” Jesse asked now the frantic explosion of activity was done.

Garen looks at his notes and scribbles to collect his thoughts so he could convey the seriousness without inducing panic.

“My Kara decoder ring basically makes it out to be your Granddaughter is at your friends and they are surrounded by bad guys. Kara is calling for reinforcements and additional medical equipment. She specified she wanted Allyson and Bekka for long range capability. As far as Son Tay and Rourke’s Drift? Well, In Son Tay, the rescue force caught the enemy by surprise and got a large force into the compound by using miniguns to kill two watch towers while the rescuers intentionally crashed a helicopter full of Special Forces into the main yard.”

“And Rourke’s Drift?” Zed prompted.

“A tiny force of British soldiers held out against 20 to 1 or more odds against a Zulu hoard.”

“So, If I understand it, Kara and Heidi are fighting their way in and going to wait for Bekka, Doug, Amelia and Allyson to come rescue them?” Jesse summarized.

Garen nodded his head.

“Yup.”

Garen started making notes for what else needed to be done for the giant medivac. Emilia came back into the room.

“The gate is secure. Now what do we do?”

Garen started to say something when he heard the radio again.

The voice on the radio was Heidi’s but it wasn’t. No one here but Emilia had heard that voice from her before. It was the voice on the trail when her mother slapped her. All the blood drained from her face when she heard it over the rain and the wind on the radio.

“Sprout, Keep your heads down. One minute out. Danger close, 290 true. Archangel, Inbound HOT!”

Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
When I heard Kara’s voice over the radio, I knew. I was already buckling the plate carrier on when it was confirmed for everyone else. Allyson and Angelique were already primed for it for the last couple of days so they were out the door fast, but they still had to buckle everything on when they got to the truck. I wanted more room to do it. That’s why I didn’t leave it in the Subaru. Doug was the slowest, but not by much. I knew he had a whole host of competing emotions. He was going to try and save Jesse’s Granddaughter, trying to rescue Heidi, and trying to be there to help protect his own daughter. I am going to have to focus him on the task at hand.

I feel all the same panic and adrenaline rush like I did that day many years ago when Garen and I and the rest raced to save Kara and Christian and the rest. This time, I have at least four hours of playing chase trying to keep up with a mad woman behind the wheel of the truck in front of me. Talking to Doug will hopefully help him. I also hope it will help me.
