Palestinian sources cited by Walla reported that Israel has delivered an ultimatum to Hamas to stop rocket fire from Gaza within 48 hours. Otherwise, Israel warned, it intends to launch an attack on Gaza.

The sources said that the threat was delivered by Egyptian Intelligence to the head of Hamas's political bureau, Musa Abu Marzuk, who is in Cairo.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said at a Fourth of July reception at the US Ambassador's residence that Israel is preparing for two possibilities. “One – that the fire will stop and then our operations will also stop; and the second, that the fire will continue and then our forces will act forcefully.”

"We are looking for calm, not escalation, but if Hamas chooses to act against us, we shall be ready," IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz said in remarks tweeted by the army.

But in Gaza, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, warned Israel to wind down its Gaza air strikes and widespread arrests in Judea and Samaria – mainly of Hamas members.

"What the enemy is doing in the West Bank and Gaza... adds fuel to the fire of confrontation," spokesman Abu Obeida told a press conference.

"Idiotic measures by your leaders will be enough for us to turn your localities and sites...into embers."
Over 15 rockets, part of the roughly 40 that have been fired from Gaza in the last two days, were fired at southern Israel in a salvo Thursday afternoon, causing two fires to break out.

One of the rockets fell right next to a kibbutz in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council area, and another exploded in the Sderot industrial area. Fires broke out in both areas, reports Ynet.

Within an hour of the rockets, around 14 mortar shells from Gaza exploded in the Eshkol Regional Council area, leaving an IDF soldier with mild wounds after taking shrapnel to the leg.

A short time later another three rockets fell in the Eshkol Regional Council area, and three mortars reportedly hit a town in the area as well.

I expected it after Michael111's post yesterday.

Gonna be an interesting weekend.

Hamas = Sunni, and it is very possible that some of the IS members (or other Sunni militant groups) in the immediate surrounding areas (Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt/Sinai etc) will "help" keep Israel busy if they go into Gaza or West Bank after Hamas.

anyone know when the clock started? I've been seeing several versions of this story, but don't know the OFFICIAL start time...

Too Long. 48 minutes would be more than reasonable.

Nah.....48 seconds would have been reasonable.

Then target electrical generation and distribution, water distribution, cell telephone towers and central offices, food warehouses. Hit them where the average person will feel the pain.

I don't know what in the way of highway infrastructure, bridges, etc, but also take them out.

Those targets don't move.

They've said "48 hours", my guess is that time line is more an issue of IDF needs than allowing for communications. Also I suspect that given the likelihood of Hamas or their "affiliated" groups doing something "bigger" before that time line expires, the IDF could well "cold start" actions before the 48 hours are up. Likely that would mean more firepower being employed than boots.

Ok, so according to the timestamp on this article, the 48 hours was up on July 5th at 9:45 pm.
As of right now, we're actually on hour 86+
(And I'm sure the 48 hour clock was started BEFORE this article was written!)

On my phone alert, I got a JPOST alert that says "IDF Preparing for escalation against Hamas, Senior IDF source says."

So is it SMACKDOWN TIME???

Israeli planes drop 'warning' leaflets in Gaza

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli warplanes on Monday dropped warning leaflets in the northern areas of the Gaza Strip, witnesses and Israeli media reported.

The leaflets read: "To the people of the Gaza Strip: The terrorists and smugglers are well aware that their terrorist acts of digging tunnels to smuggle military ammunition is a target for the Israeli Defense Forces, but they keep working and taking cover near your residences.

"Do not stand still. You are being used by terrorists who will not be by your side when you get hurt. Take responsibility for your future!"

Israel to intensify attacks on Gaza
7/7/14 KUNA -

The Israeli security cabinet decided Monday to intensify the military attacks on Gaza Strip in response to a rocket barrage by Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups in the Strip, according to Israel radio.

At the end of its three-hour meeting in Jerusalem, the security cabinet gave the green light to the Israeli army to expand and ratchet up the military strikes against militant targets in the Strip on a daily basis until Hamas leader realize that a ceasefire is in their favor, the radio reported, citing a government insider.

The Egyptian secret service will convey message from Israel to Hamas and vice versa in a bid to deescalate the tension. The radio noted that there is disagreement between the political and military wings of Hamas on the proposed truce.

While Hamas movement was in favor of de-escalation of the tension, things went to the contrary today after Ezz-Eddin Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the movement, fired a volley of rockets into Sderot and other southern Israeli towns in retaliation to the Israeli air attacks which killed seven Hamas members last night.

Hamas demands, as a condition for truce, that Israel must release its members who were detained during the recent security campaign in the West Bank as well as the former prisoners who were rearrested.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army called up some 1,500 reservists from two infantry brigades around the Gaza Strip in preparation for a possible escalation that could result in a large-scale military operation.

The reservists, most of them are commanders and are from the home front command, will arrive in waves along the frontline with Gaza. Haaretz daily quoted a senior military officer as saying that the escalation was aimed at halting the rocket fire and would be expanded as necessary if the launches did not cease.

"The blows will be harder. Each succeeding day will be harder for Hamas. We will escalate the attacks to make it clear to them that it is in their interest to stop the rocket fire," the officer said. "We are prepared to broaden the operation in case the rocket fire does not stop," the senior officer added.

On its part, Hamas defied the Israeli decision and asked all resistance groups to mobilize their fighters and brace for an imminent Israeli aggression.
Spokesman of the movement Sami Abu Zuhri said in a brief statement that "our people will never yield to the Israeli crimes. "We are capable of repelling any Israeli aggression; blood for blood," he said, vowing that Israel will pay dearly for the killing of seven Hamas members.

Yadlin: Israel must strike Hamas hard

By YAAKOV LAPPIN
07/06/2014 12:34

The price of not undertaking an operation in Gaza might well be higher than the price of the operation, former MI chief warns.

ShowImage.ashx
An IDF tank positions itself outside the border of the northern Gaza Strip in this photo from March 2014 Photo: REUTERS
Israel must strengthen its deterrence and strike Hamas hard, but not reoccupy Gaza, which would be a strategic mistake, former Military Intelligence chief Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Yadlin said on Sunday.

Yadlin – who is the director of the Institute for National Security Studies – made the comments on the INSS’s Facebook page following a weekend in which 30 rockets fired from Gaza slammed into southern areas of Israel, and Beersheba came under Palestinian rocket fire for the first time since Israel’s clash with Hamas in November 2012.

The rocket fired on Beersheba Saturday was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.

“Reoccupation of Gaza would be a strategic mistake. It would not be right to resume control of a million-and-ahalf Palestinians,” Yadlin said.

“Hamas today is weak politically and on this level has in fact deferred to Abbas. Israel should not replace Hamas or the Palestinian Authority- controlled Gaza. Hamas, however, has not dismantled its military capabilities. It attacks the Negev, prepares kidnapping operations, and threatens populated areas in Israel with its long-range rockets,” Yadlin added.

“Therefore, if Hamas continues to shell our civilian population and to launch rockets, Israel should neutralize the threat through a broad military move,” he stated.

The IDF should target Hamas’s military wing, its leadership, and the terror organization’s weapons and rocket production centers, Yadlin said.

“Such a move should integrate intelligence, firepower [especially aerial] and ground maneuvers to reach key points and strategic areas in the Gaza Strip,” Yadlin said.

“Such an operation is not without cost and might include damage to the fabric of life, the economy and even fatalities. But it is necessary,” he added.

“The price of not undertaking an operation in Gaza might well be higher than the price of the operation. Prolonged shelling of the Negev, and the continued strengthening of Hamas will force us eventually to launch such an operation in the near future – and at a less favorable time, facing an enemy with intensified capabilities that exceed the capabilities it possesses today,” he concluded.

Hamas’s weapons production program in Gaza is moving ahead at full speed, with local rocket production centers churning out thousands of projectiles, according to Israeli security evaluations communicated to The Jerusalem Post in June. Terror groups have collectively amassed 10,000 rockets in the Gaza Strip. Of those, some 5,000 to 6,000 are in Hamas’s possession, and an additional 2,000 to 3,000 are in the hands of Islamic Jihad.

Hundreds of projectiles are believed to be able to strike greater Tel Aviv.

Since taking over the Gaza Strip in 2007 in a violent coup that forced Fatah out of power in the enclave, Hamas has restructured itself into a military- like combat entity, complete with territorial divisions.

Hamas’s combat divisions are made up of approximately 16,000 gunmen, while Islamic Jihad has built up a fighting force of 5,000 armed guerrillas, with the aid of Iranian funds and training.

According to Israeli evaluations, there are about 4,000 members of the smaller Gazan terror groups, each armed with their own mini-arsenals of rockets, bombs and assault weapons.

Gaza Rockets Send Thousands into Bomb Shelters: Live Updates

Published on: June 24, 2014

ROCKETATTACKS2

Gaza terrorists fired several rockets at southern Israel, sending thousands into bomb shelters in the Ashkelon area.

For more than a week, Gaza terrorists have continued to fire rockets at Israel. The attacks are increasing the rocket threat against southern communities, forcing the IDF to act in defense of innocent civilians. Following each rocket strike, the Israel Air Force has responded by targeting the activity of terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, terrorists in the area have fired more than 8,000 rockets into Israel. Over 3.5 million Israelis are currently living under threat of rocket attacks.

Although Israel’s Iron Dome Missile Defense system stops some of the attacks, most rockets are capable of reaching Israel’s biggest southern cities. More than half a million Israelis have less than 60 seconds to find shelter after a rocket is launched from Gaza into Israel.

rocket map

“We have repeatedly addressed the consequences facing those who seek to endanger the lives of innocent civilians,” IDF Spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner recently said in response to the attacks. “Iron Dome’s success does not change the absurd fact that Israelis have been living under continuous rocket threat for multiple years. We shall persist with our determination to combat terror elements and eliminate the pending threat to Israeli lives.”

Israeli army launches offensive on Gaza Strip

— Jul. 7, 2014 8:58 PM EDT

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli army says it has launched an offensive operation against the Gaza Strip to quell rocket attacks, and a Palestinian official says Israeli airstrikes have wounded at least nine Palestinians.

A Twitter statement from the Israeli army early Tuesday says Operation Protective Edge is intended to "stop the terror Israel's citizens face on a daily basis."

The army says it was carrying out airstrikes early Tuesday in the Gaza Strip early Tuesday. It did not elaborate.

Gaza health official Ashraf Al-Kedra says at least nine Palestinians were brought to a Gaza hospital with light to moderate injuries.

The airstrikes come after Gaza militants fired dozens of rockets at southern Israel late Monday, as the Israeli military rushed more forces to the border.
