Harvard professor says global coronavirus pandemic 'likely,' infecting 40-70% of world this year

A Harvard epidemiologist calls a global COVID-19 pandemic 'likely' while CDC doctors say they are bracing for it to spread beyond the current 15 cases in the US

By
Alexandra Kelley

Story at a glance
  • A CDC doctor confirmed that the agency is working to prepare for more coronavirus cases in the U.S.
  • The doctor elaborated by ensuring that there are plenty of medical safety devices, like face masks, for health care professionals and patients.

Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch told The Wall Street Journal that "it's likely we'll see a global pandemic" of coronavirus, with 40 to 70 percent of the world's population likely to be infected this year.
"What proportion of those will be symptomatic, I can't give a good number," added Lipsitch, who is the Director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Two other experts have recently given similar estimates.
Ira Longini, a biostatistician and adviser to the World Health Organization, has predicted that two-thirds of the global population may eventually contract COVID-19.
Prof Gabriel Leung, the chair of public health medicine at Hong Kong University, says if the transmission estimate of 2.5 additional people for each infected rate is accurate, that would result in an "attack rate" that would affect 60 to 80 percent of the world's population.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already said that it is preparing for the coronavirus to have a greater impact in the U.S. than the 15 confirmed cases currently.
In an interview with CNN on Feb. 13, Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said, “Right now we're in an aggressive containment mode.” He added that “this virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission."

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, recently confirmed that the CDC is taking steps to prepare for the coronavirus to “take a foothold in the U.S.”
Along with communicating with health care facilities and resources, Messonnier says that the CDC is in constant talks with the medical supplies manufacturers, distributors and other health care partners to ensure there are plenty of preventative devices like masks and gloves available in the U.S. in the event of a larger outbreak.
Some of these partners have reported higher demand for N95 face masks and respirators.
She also took the time to explain the CDC’s recommended use of any preventative supplies, especially face masks. Because the virus isn’t spreading through the community in the U.S., Messonnier only advises using face masks if “you are sick or under investigation and not hospitalized,” before one enters a health care provider’s office, or when caring for a potential infected patient.

When alone and at home, however, Messonnier says that people do not need to wear a mask.
She also confirmed that 195 people from Wuhan have completed the 14 day quarantine and left the March Air Reserve Base to be self-monitored with the help of state and local health authorities.
Additionally, amid reports of poor treatment of quarantined individuals and the military staff tending to them, Messonnier stated that the individuals discharged “pose no health threat to their surrounding communities or the community they will return to.”
After the CDC confirmed that a lab error led to the accidental discharge of an infected patient from a San Diego hospital, Messionnier told reporters that the CDC and other health officials are adding “additional quality controls” to keep patients organized.

Despite their high-tech tools, the authorities are mainly relying on a flood of workers to keep hundreds of millions of people from coming in contact with outsiders.

Residential lockdowns of varying strictness — from checkpoints at building entrances to hard limits on going outdoors — now cover at least 760 million people in China, or more than half the country’s population, according to a New York Times analysis of government announcements in provinces and major cities. Many of these people live far from the city of Wuhan, where the virus was first reported and which the government sealed off last month.

That is a lot of people by anyone's standards.

Geographically, TB2K membership is fairly well distributed.

The day is inevitable when we have a member stricken with this illness.

That will REALLY send the issue home to any doubting Thomas in our little group.

Documented fact sheets on the Spanish flu, with real numbers, real percentages, real deaths and detructions may help those who are trying to convey the seriousness of this to their loved ones.... Share the sheet, let them know the info about that is all over the web, you care, and that they can call you if they have questions or concerns... sometimes this helps give people the space and safety they need to step away from their normalcy biases. There's always prayer, too...The lord still works in miracles : )

I don't care how many beatings and gunshots they dish out or how many laws- this thing is loose on the world. Being a totalitarian ass about it changes nothing except people's perception. Their grip on power was slipping before this kicked off. I'd imagine it is worse now.

People only submit for so long and then things fall apart. Canned sunshine hasn't started falling yet. Give it a few more weeks. They can't let the world know what it already knows - stupid huh? We figgered that out years ago. Not everybody thinks communism is a good idea. Even if they do live in China. Dangerous times, these.

I give up.
You’re right most likely but I ***still*** have yet to hear a single, solitary person talk about this or even act like “it’s a thing”!!
Just today at work (Veterinary office) I finally told my boss...” you need to start ordering extra antibiotics because shortages will happen from this Coronavirus, specifically Doxycycline and most everything else we use every day”...
I repeated this, again, because I thought he didn’t hear me. He literally paused for a second, then just walked away.

I’m still a little shocked.

Yes, they really do not like it when "subordinates" tell them something. It's not your position, don't ya know.

They would recommend "got Jesus" as your first go to for survival.

Wow, how incredibly disrespectful and judgmental. You are my newest recipient of the Ignore Award. Congrats.

ETA: I guess one could interpret your comment two different ways: 1) Our beloved, deceased elders were God loving people and put Him first in all things, or 2) Our beloved elders were not practical, put their heads in the sand and blindly trusted "Jesus" to save them.

I took it as the latter, given some of your posts. My apologies if I misinterpreted. Either way, the shiny award is yours to keep. : )

WHO advance team on coronavirus finally on way to China, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweets

GENEVA – An advance team of international experts led by the World Health Organization (WHO) has left for Beijing to help investigate China’s coronavirus epidemic, the Geneva-based agency said on Sunday.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who made a trip to Beijing for talks with President Xi Jinping and Chinese ministers in late January, returned with an agreement on sending an international mission.

But it has taken nearly two weeks to get the government’s green light on its composition, which was not announced, other than to say that WHO veteran Dr. Bruce Aylward, a Canadian epidemiologist and emergencies expert, was heading it.

“I’ve just been at the airport seeing off members of an advance team for the @WHO-led #2019nCoV international expert mission to #China, led by Dr Bruce Aylward, veteran of past public health emergencies,” Tedros said in a tweet from Geneva.

Dr. Sylvie Briand, who accompanied Tedros last month and stayed behind for talks with top Chinese health officials, told Reuters last week that they were discussing a list of experts with China.

“Because it is a joint mission, they need to be on board, it’s not just an international group going there. We have about 15 people,” said Briand, director of Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness at WHO.

China raised the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak to 811 on Sunday, passing the number killed globally by the SARS epidemic, as authorities made plans for millions of people returning to work after an extended Lunar New Year break.

The virus, which has spread to two dozen countries, has killed some 2 percent of more than 37,550 cases worldwide, with 99 percent of infections in China, WHO figures show.

The WHO declared the outbreak a global emergency on Jan. 30, days after the Chinese central government imposed a lockdown on 60 million people in Hubei province and its capital Wuhan, epicentre of the virus that emerged in December in a seafood market.

Tedros said on Saturday that he hoped the team would include experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

“It has to be meaningful on the ground,” Lawrence Gostin, professor of global health law at Georgetown Law, said in an interview in Geneva this week.

Gostin called for a “genuine partnership with transparent flows of information and accountability for the response,” adding that there should be a strong CDC presence.

“CDC has got no peer in terms of its experience and technical expertise in dealing with international outbreaks,” he said.

“But the other benefit is the smart diplomacy, what it could signal is that despite all of our differences in ideology, trade, politics, that when faced with a common threat to humanity, we come together as a human community to tackle it,” Gostin said.

Yes, for sure. For the past 2 weeks I have emptied, cleaned out and reorganized every pantry, closet, cabinet, drawer and storage space in the house. I got rid of lots of stuff I don’t use or need and filled in what was missing. It’s a good feeling to know what you have and where it is.

:hof:

Well that's at least 3 of us as I mentioned feeling like nesting days ago.

(Just kidding about the hair on fire. I don't panic. God's got it under control. Sometimes I have trouble seeing the big picture though.)

One of the Americans on the ship is ridiculous. He is not taking the flight by the US because they won’t let him bring all his stuff. Says he has a commercial flight already booked for when his quarantine is over. I am guessing the US will place him in a 14 day quarantine anyways once he reaches the US.

Actually I posted something this morning suggesting if they didn't take this flight in they might not be allowed back into US for awhile, at CDC's discretion... post # 13252

Hey, all... I just want to throw a reminder out there to everyone that just because something is grown, produced, or made in a country outside of China doesn’t mean there still won’t be massive backlogs in supply chains. I read more than once that in many cases, the PACKAGING is made in China. Without canisters or bags mass produced from Asia to pack the coffee in, there’s still no coffee to be shipped regardless of how things go in South America. Same thing goes for myriad products. They might be made here in North America, but packaging comes from China. Or they might be assembled here in North America, but come from China. Case in point, feminine products. I just looked on the package, and it says “assembled in Canada.” It’s possible that product, parts, or packaging still has some Chinese origins. In fact, it’s likely.

I think the implications of this reasoning will be far greater than we could ever imagine.

In other news, I’ve found myself in some serious “nesting” mode, not unlike a pregnant woman preparing for her baby’s arrival. I’m organizing closets and pantries, cleaning out junk drawers, assessing inventories, making lists. It just kind of hit me all of a sudden, with a sense or urgency. Anyone else feeling like this?
We’ve been doing the same thing. Getting stuff cleaned out that we haven’t done in too long.

Just stopped at our pharmacy to ask the country of origin for hubby’s Lisinopril. They looked it up and said it’s made here in the US. The pharmacist (not a tech or clerk) looked surprised at the idea of many pharmaceuticals being made in China.

Health announces the first case of corona infection in Egypt for a foreign person

Friday, February 14, 2020 7:04 PM
The Ministry of Health and Corona

Dr. Khaled Mujahid, Advisor to the Minister of Health and Population for Media Affairs and the official spokesperson of the ministry, said that the ministry succeeded in discovering the first case of a foreign person infected with "Corona" virus, thanks to the preventive precaution plan implemented by the ministry by activating the electronic program to record and follow-up of arrivals from countries that showed infections With the emerging coronavirus and through the preventive teams that follow them around the clock, indicating that laboratory tests were conducted for the suspected case, which resulted in a positive virus, but without any symptoms.

Mujahid added that the World Health Organization was immediately informed, and all preventive measures and measures of the case were taken in cooperation with the World Health Organization, where the case was transferred to a self-sterilized ambulance to the hospital for isolation, follow-up, and reassurance, explaining that the condition is HIV-positive and does not appear on it No symptoms, and his condition is completely stable.

He said that the Ministry has taken strict preventive measures against those in contact with the situation through conducting the necessary analyzes that were negative for the virus, and they were self-isolated in their places of residence as a precautionary measure for 14 days "incubation period of the disease", pointing to their follow-up periodically every 8 hours and giving them health instructions to be followed And the building in which the case was used and those in contact with it were sterilized.

In this regard, Dr. John Gabor, the representative of the World Health Organization in Egypt, praised the speed and transparency of the Egyptian government in dealing with the situation, and its keenness to inform the organization of the case as soon as it is suspected, praising the preventive measures taken by the Ministry of Health and Population regarding the discovered case and those who are in contact with it.

John stressed that Egypt is one of the first countries to develop a good preventive plan to address the emerging corona virus and how to deal with infected cases once they are discovered.

The Minister of Health and Population also held, today, Friday, an expanded meeting with the leadership of the Ministry to follow up the implementation of the Ministry's plan to address and deal with the emerging corona virus, in the Ministry's general office, stressing that all preventive measures are taken in the country's ports.

The Minister of Health and Population is following the 24-hour Crisis Management Chamber, which includes representatives from all ministries and relevant authorities, at the ministry’s general office, to follow up the situation of the Corona virus emerging inside the country and the Ministry’s preventive plan in the ports and ports and all health directorates in the Republic, stressing to raise the levels of readiness to the utmost In all ports and airports nationwide.

So it is an incubator rather than a quarantine.
correct. and it might be helpful to adopt a different attitude about self quarantine.
you are not locking yourself in to protect others from getting the virus because you do not have it.
you are actually quarantining the rest of the world . . . until they prove they don't have it.
you are not quarantining yourself . . . you are quarantining "THEY"

You may want to rethink that friendship...
People remember that you warned them and show up at your home. I have no use for people who have been warned, yet do nothing.

Wonderful point. Thankfully, we are four states away from each other. This person is a good Christian soul that is dear to me, but sadly has no Spirit of Wisdom or discernment of any kind.

I think it’s a very rare thing, this small but growing group who sees the writing on the wall and prepares accordingly. I pray this fizzles our and that nothing serious comes of it, but with each passing day that hope dwindles. This is already an historic event that will be taught to generations far into the future. Whether it leads to a full-blown pandemic, economic depression, a global war, or all of the above, I will first and foremost be ready in my faith with Christ as my rock. Secondly, I will be prepared as the Holy Spirit leads me, regardless of who listens.

We are the Noahs of this time, who know the devastating floods are coming, one way or another. This is why we’re all here together, on this board. I will continue to share and guide and help my friends if they want to build their own arks as well, but should someone decide to ignore the warnings and perish as a result of poor planning, I can’t feel any guilt. Pity, yes. Sadness, of course. But no guilt.

Exactly. They’re not pull pulling the wool over the eyes of ‘We the sheep dog’ anytime soon. As a matter of fact I recall three days in November of 2010 where a Sino sub thought it was chilling off our West Coast in The Channel Islands chain.

Gang, it took a while, but Africa is now in play, disease wise. You might of missed it, with only 338 pages to wander through:ld:, but back on page 330, post 13,178 I told you all that the first CONFIRMED case in Africa was in Egypt, Cairo if I am not mistaken, so the report of the CONFIRMED CASE IN SOUTH AFRICA, IE SWAZILAND, IS REALLY THE 2ND CASE OF CONFIRMED VIRUS IN AFRICA.

KABOOM. KABOOM, KABOOM.

We all said that it was strange to not have any confirmed cases in Africa, South America etc, and the general consensus was to just wait, go count all our piles of ammo, and chill out till Africa started exploding in virus cases. And guess what, we now have TWO separate, confirmed virus cases, with each one of them in a separate part of Africa, like Egypt in the far north, and South Africa/Swaziland in the south of Africa.

In the 72 hours or so around Valentine's Day we have seen MULTIPLE cases of CONFIRMED, no bs like the Deleware report, in Africa, in Hawaii, in London etc. Face it, the powers that be know it is global pandemic time and are doing the how much info do I release to warn people, but without having them urinate in their pants.

I nailed it for this weekend and despite some smirking here, uber doomer, Doomer Doug has doomed on spot on. :eleph:

Yep that is correct my fellow doomers. This Valentine's Day saw CONFIRMATION of infected people in London, Africa, Hawaii and who knows where else we DON'T KNOW ABOUT YET. It is game over. Global Pandemic in motion. PREPARE. PREPARE. PREPARE.:sheep:

It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west, and south. At no more than 200 kilometres (120 mi) north to south and 130 kilometres (81 mi) east to west, Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in Africa; despite this, its climate and topography are diverse, ranging from a cool and mountainous highveld to a hot and dry lowveld.

The population is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis.

Eswatini is a developing country with a small economy. With a GDP per capita of $4,145.97, it is classified as a country with a lower-middle income.

The Swazi population faces major health issues: HIV/AIDS and (to a lesser extent) tuberculosis are widespread.[24][25] It is estimated that 26% of the adult population is HIV-positive. As of 2018, Eswatini has the 12th-lowest life expectancy in the world, at 58 years.[26] The population of Eswatini is young, with a median age of 20.5 years and people aged 14 years or younger constituting 37.5% of the country's total population.[27] The present population growth rate is 1.2%.

Probably not in his. That sometimes happened in S&W K frame revolvers. Doubt it’s been seen in other revolvers.

Ma Super GP100's are based upon th' Ruger Super Redhawk frame, same spring systems, an' built like a tank. They've been known ta go tens of thousan's o' full house rounds, wi'ot a hiccup. It's said tha' yuh'll wear out, afore a GP100... An' that's a "regular" GP100. Pretty spectaclar...

Don't know what a .38Spl would feel like, outta one. Shucks, outta Ruger .357, ah only use magnums. Always have. Creedo? Train like yuh fight, fight like yuh train... Good habit. Guess a second one'd be, always carry two guns- ta shoot wi' both hands...

Yeah, and I tried talking about it with my best friend today. Wouldn’t take it seriously. Said something to the effect of, “I can see how this might affect some parts of the economy like car part suppliers, but we don’t plan on buying a car anytime soon. And we don’t know any Chinese people. So thank you for your concern, but I don’t watch the news and refuse to let any negativity into my life. There is no need to have anymore discussions with me about this. If you’re troubled and feeling panicked, I suggest you talk to a pastor or your doctor.”

This was after I brought up medicine shortages, all the other supply chains, the R0 factor, and the quarantines. Whatever. I can’t save everybody. Even using the “better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it” line didn’t sink in.
