BEIJING, Feb 14 (Reuters) - All people returning to the Chinese capital Beijing should quarantine themselves for 14 days to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, the official Beijing Daily said on Friday.

Most likely this is an opportunistic infection OR the patient had an underlying aspergillosis and then got the Covid on top of it. I'm still not sold on the HIV angle.

Easy....

Western sanitation the way I see it. And I would include Japan in that as well. Although the virus is transmissible through fomites (surface contamination), droplets and airborne its also shed thru the fecal oral route. With the exception of Japan and perhaps some others they have squat toilets and poor hygiene. Many of them don’t use toilet paper but wipe with their hands. In addition soap and water washing after defecating is rare.

I’m thinking that although it’s transmissible through other vectors the virus load is less and your less likely to catch the virus thru the other routes. China has relatively poor hygiene especially among the older people and it’s hard to change life long habits. Therefore the older people have higher incidence of illness and add that to a weaker immune system that comes with age.

We are not seeing the spread of disease in other countries like China has experienced and the biggest difference between China and the rest of us is hygiene habits. I surmise the virus load in fecal is more pronounced than other routes.

If so, that would be great..... now we only have to worry about New Jersey.... lol

What a good thing it is then to know that the Lomatium Herb is stated as being good for fighting fungus as well as bacteria and viruses. Available at barlowherbal.com . I consider it my last line of defense, beyond Sambucol and Mega dosed vitamin C.

I have been following Dr. John Campbell through the process. I love his thoroughly, British, no nonsense approach to the outbreak. Reminds me of Sgt. Friday and "Just the facts" attitude. :)

His video this morning in protecting your self and your family. All the things we have been talking about, but if you have people in your life who may not listen to you, his approach may a way to introduce them to the topic.

From the original link:
  • 03:25: “China’s National Health Commission reports 267 new cases and 5 new deaths on the mainland, excluding Hubei province. Hubei Province deducted 108 prior deaths from the death toll due to double counting. “

So basically, now the dead are rising in Wuhan..............

I knew it. I knew it was only a matter of time... :hmm:

Its funny how it is looking that way ain't it? I mean, this thing has been in the wild since late December? And lets be honest...there has been PLENTY of regular activity (people using public transportation/people gathering at large events/etc.) in the U.S. (and everywhere ELSE besides China) annnnnnnnnd....its STILL not even close to taking off as is it is in China. It seriously looks like an accidental release of something from that level 4 Bio facility in Wuhan with the characteristics you describe...not a full blown killer bio weapon, but perhaps some kind of control or prototype for a vaccine/booster or something else targeted to an "asian" genome. If there was any question to the case/mortality numbers here in the U.S. that went against the official number...there would be plenty of leaks to the contrary...the U.S. ISN'T China in this regard. And that simply hasn't happened either. I'll keep my head up and keep vigilant...but facts are what they are.
Especially as this Sunday we will be at the 14 day mark since the Super Bowl. Was wondering if some of the high powered business people who typically attend would have traveled to China or have had colleagues who had done so. But we don't seem to see a spike coming from that just yet. I view this is potentially good news.

I think many of us are wondering the same thing, but if the Chinese ACE2 thingee is the reason the virus has hammered the populace in China won’t it hammer the rather large and fairly well spread out Chinese population in this country also, once it reaches them? I would look for California and Hawaii in particular to be the first places it gets recognized. Then every town with a significant “Chinatown” enclave, or Chinese college student population, or....popular Chinese restaurant ... just a matter of waiting out the clock To find out. In any event, even if our non-chinese portion of the population is relatively unaffected, it would appear that our economy is definitely going to be affected by china’s manufacturing shut-down.l

Here is the biggest problem overall with containing it once it is "in the wild".

We can't test for it. Only the CDC and some of the states have the ability to do that. It is a 24 hr. turnaround at the minimum--and as suspected cases increase that will also increase. Testing submission is going to be limited to only those cases that have a compelling history and are inching closer to ARDS before they are even tested.

Practically that means that the mild cases are going to come in, hack in the ER for 2-6 hours because they are not of a high enough acuity to be seen immediately, then either go home in frustration or track it back into the treatment rooms. Medical staff are not wearing masks--they were all mandated to get a flu shot so they wouldn't have to wear a mask--so they too are now infected. We will run a flu screen on them and it will come back negative. A few of the larger hospitals will have the ability to run a respiratory PCR panel on them, but those too will come back negative. That will be it: they will be given a breathing treatment or 2, discharged with a nebulizer and some albuterol (or a puffer) and told to come back if it gets worse. Multiply that scenario a hundred fold a day for a smaller ER and you begin to see the problem with contamination, triage, treatment, and isolation.

We dont' have good information or a way to rapidly screen patients for Covid-19. Until then, its just another respiratory bug that we don't identify, that we treat empirically, and that we send home assuming that they will get better.
And even if the ER staff had been wearing masks, if they're not at least N95, they'd be ineffective anyway. Other than keeping them from touching their faces.

Just saw a report …..hummmmm over at zerohedge (?) that said a new case came up when a person returned from Hawaii.

Just in the FYI category. I can try to find it if you want.

Here it is

Japan reports 4 new cases; one patient recently returned from Hawaii.

Think also Seattle and, particularly, Vancouver. Where I hear the Chinese have bought up a great deal of property.

I have been reading this thread since it was only 97 pages and have been watching the news morning and night. This has been going for close to a month now.
And so far... this is what I’ve learned.

We have no idea what this is, and that’s the scariest part.
(though more than likely it’s bioengineered, that I really have no doubt)
We don’t know how bad it really is (the virus itself, but we know the lives over there are hell) or had bad it will get here.
We don’t know what is really going on China, because China won’t let the US in. (Suspcious?? Very!!)
We do know that China (as someone said earlier) always plans like 500 years ahead. They are in for the long plan.
We know they are taking insane drastic actions!
We do know that the Chinese are opportunist, and they are seriously overpopulated and we are about to go into a GSM that will wipe out crops that they don’t even have and they are having huge protests! They have more males than females, a ratio that just doesn’t work. They are in major debt.
And we know hardly anyone outside of China has died (I may have to eat those words later when/if proven wrong) and no one that is not of Asian descent has gotten seriously ill (again, may have to eat my words later)
There are a lot of things that we don’t know, that we really wished we did know. A lot, and in the end, we can only speculate about it. That’s what’s so unnerving about this whole thing! Not the virus itself.

Watch, prepare, pray (like crazy)

And this is something I know without a doubt (some may disagree and that’s fine but this for the Christians out there)

God is still on High, and nothing is going to take Him off His throne. He has a plan, and He has a will that will be done no matter if we understand it or not, but He does and it is a righteous, holy, sovereign will that would never be used for evil.
We can take comfort in knowing God KNOWS precisely what’s going on, even if we don’t. He KNOWS what’s going to come, ESPECIALLY when we don’t have a clue. And He gives us the wisdom, and the warnings to prepare.

Watch, prepare, and pray, and may God be with you all.

For those who need some encouragement, may I suggest (of course) psalms 23, but also psalms 121, and psalms 127... only to name a very few

(Thank you for letting have my small rant and I’m praying for all of y’all out there, especially those in the city.)

How many of us jump on this string every hour and scroll through looking for that "AHH-HAAAAAA" post? I know I do. I think I'm looking for the first reports of "clustering". I agree again with Rondaben, ER's are just treating and streeting "flu" cases, treating systemic complaints. How may of us truly KNOW if we stood next to someone from China in a Walmart line, picked up an item after an infected person hacked on it.....etc.?
My other BIG fear is for the herd to sniff in the wind something is up. Imagine if Brad Pitt, Oprah, Leo slipped a comment that they were worried or making adjustments to their lifestyles?? Be it fake news, fact news, Facebook, Twitter Tweet, anything could start the masses moving. If the locusts are bad in Africa, just wait for the GDP to start stampeding the grocery stores. Right now I'm more worried about a "Pandemic Panic" I see coming. The R0 for panicking peeps has got to be at least R75!!! Get it now if you need it, the more this goes mainstream, the less time you'll have.

Eight planes put on lockdown at Heathrow over coronavirus fears

James Hockaday
Friday 14 Feb 2020 2:29 pm

Eight planes at Heathrow Airport were grounded this morning after passengers on board complained of coronavirus symptoms.

Passengers on a United Airlines flight from San Francisco were told to stay put after landing because someone may have caught the deadly flu-like disease. Travellers say the captain warned they could be stuck on the tarmac for some time as concerns had been raised on ‘seven other planes’. Public Health England and Heathrow officials have refused to release any details about this morning’s incident which would have involved hundreds of passengers.

But United Airlines have confirmed someone had ‘become unwell’ on board Flight 901 from San Francisco. A passenger on board the flight said travellers had been asked to fill in a form before workers in hazmat suits came to clean the vehicle.

Andy West, from Henley-on-Thames, said staff led a passenger to the back of the aircraft and waited for health officials to arrive. The traveller said everyone else was allowed to leave about half-an-hour later. He told MailOnline: ‘We were told to stay sat until authorities came on board, and he [the captain] said that seven other flights had landed and had a similar situation. ‘I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried, my mind started to race.’

The chief development officer for a PR agency said cabin crew were not wearing any masks or protective clothing when dealing with the passenger. In a statement United Airlines said: ‘Our team at London Heathrow Airport is providing assistance related to United flight 901 (San Francisco-London Heathrow) today, following reports of an individual becoming unwell onboard. ‘The safety of our customers and employees is our highest priority and we continue to work closely with local authorities. ‘It is not clear what happened to the passenger who became unwell, nor where they had travelled from.’

There have now been 15 cases of coronavirus in the US, where the government has banned all travellers who have been to China over the past two weeks. No cases have been recorded in San Francisco but six people were diagnosed in California – two in nearby San Jose.

Nine people in the UK have tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus, named this week Covid-19 by the World Health Organisation. The disease has now infected more than 64,000 people across the world and has killed more than 1,300 people – mostly in the outbreak’s epicentre of Wuhan, China. Fears are mounting over the bug quickly spreading through London after it was revealed a Chinese national diagnosed in the capital had taken an Uber to a hospital in Lewisham. A previous UK coronavirus patient was one of 250 delegates at the UK Bus Summit at the QEII centre in Westminster on February 6.

Deceased
Sigh… I went grocery shopping late last night (lower foot traffic equals lower microbial load, right?) and had a couple of teachable moments regarding the potential for an epidemic:

1) I decided to wear a pair of regular off-white nitrile gloves while out and about, so I could perform hygiene without destroying my skin. Off to Costco I went. I grabbed the usual bi-weekly load of stuff, managed to find a short check-out line, and thought I was out of there without incident. Until… The checker handed my card back to me and I noticed the color of my palms and fingers: they had a more-than-just faint yellow tinge to them. The kind of yellow, with a hint of brown, that one would associate with sinus infections and bile – a “Human” yellow. My left hand wasn’t remotely as stained, as I had been holding my phone (grocery list) with it from pretty much the moment I entered. The right hand was steering and manipulating items.

It’s Costco: all the items I grabbed were enclosed in plastic, so it wasn’t a product “bleeding” onto the glove. I’m guessing it was the cart handle, and the various freezer handles. YUCK. When I got out to the car, I grabbed a couple of Lysol wipes and “washed” my hands with them, methodically. The gunk came off on the wipes. YUCK. I “washed” again… That disinfectant smell is glorious.

TEACHABLE MOMENT: The public is NASTY. I don’t know how many years of collected biofilm resides on those carts, and handles, but YUCK, that was disgusting. Regardless of the average level of education (this is Tech country), your fellow citizens are NASTY, and they will merrily embark upon a jihad of mindless contamination and infection.

2) I also saw a fat blue-haired Millennial woman with her Soy Boy in tow, hacking-up her lungs with directionless abandon - up one aisle and down another. A deep, muddy, body-wrenching cough... Thanks lady. The rest of us are so glad you decided to share your nasty-ass lung plague with the rest of society. You get a gold star. As I left, I could hear her coughing from across the store.

TEACHABLE MOMENT: Americans will NOT wear masks until it is too late, if at all. And, they will continue to venture out into public for as long as they are able to shuffle along. Even if they are minutes away from dropping dead, there are simply too many Twinkies left to eat, and they need their comfort food.

NOT an encouraging night.

With all due respect to you as a poster and, in reality, thanking you immensely for the reminder you provided in the post, I provide the following reply:

That was the most disgusting, sickening post I have read on this thread regarding conditions here in the U.S. You are entirely correct and should be rewarded in some way for that damned graphic reminder of what all of us face on a daily basis. I harp on these types of things with my family on such a regular basis that they think I am a pain in the ass but you are 100% correct. I was a member of an infection control committee for 15 years in a hospital environment and the committee emphasis was on the nosocomial and iatrogenic but your Costco experience should be read by every member here and discussed at length with their families.

All readers are encouraged to research:

Thank you.

Daily Mail now says 500 million in lockdown in China. (I've been wondering about the latest figure.):

500 MILLION people in China are on lockdown because of coronavirus with travel restrictions enforced in nearly 50 cities and four provinces to contain the killer disease
  • More than 64,000 people worldwide have been struck down with SARS-CoV-2
  • Almost 1,400 patients have died, with all but three deaths in mainland China

A staggering 500million people in China are in lockdown because of the killer coronavirus that is sweeping across the country.
The figure is more than the entire population of the US (330million) and is the equivalent to roughly 6.5 per cent of the world's population.
At least 48 cities and four provinces across China – including the epicentre of Wuhan and Hubei – have issued official notices for lockdown policies.
Measures include ensuring residents are registered before they are allowed in or out, as well shutting down roads, railways and public transport.

'It's Coming': CDC Director Warns Coronavirus To Become Widespread Throughout United States, 'Probably Beyond 2020'

Zero Hedge

The extremely virulent coronavirus which is sweeping through China's Hubei province like wildfire will eventually gain a foothold in the United States - becoming a 'community virus' this year or next, according to CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield.

"We don't know a lot about this virus," Redfield told CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta. "This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission."
"Right now we're in an aggressive containment mode," said Redfield.

As of Thursday, 15 cases have been confirmed in seven states; eight in California, two in Illinois and one in Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Texas, according to CNN.

Community virus

Redfield says that while more research is needed, the CDC is focused on containment strategies to isolate and slow the progression of the novel coronavirus, buying time to develop a vaccine and antiviral drugs.

"The containment phase is really to give us more time. This virus will become a community virus at some point in time, this year or next year," said Redfield. "We don't have any evidence that this coronavirus is really embedded in the community at this time, but with that said, we want to intensify our surveillance so that we're basing those conclusions based on data."

The containment strategy refers to efforts to prevent widespread transmission of the coronavirus in the United States, including having people with confirmed cases stay in isolation and placing restrictions on travel between affected areas in the world. Such containment measures were used widely during the SARS global outbreak of 2003, during which 8,098 people worldwide became sick and of those, 774 died, according to the CDC. -CNN
Controversial travel restrictions

While the World Health Organization has argued that travel restrictions on foreign nationals could backfire (on several industries?), the Trump administration has enacted travel restrictions which block foreign nationals who have visited China in the last 14 days from entering the United States. Anyone who has been to Hubei province within two weeks of their return will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ahanom Ghebreyesus opposed travel restrictions last week, saying "We reiterate our call to all countries not to impose restrictions that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade. Such restrictions can have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit."

So - According to Tedros, travel restrictions might lead to panic and racism.

The CDC's Redfield couldn't disagree more.

"Frankly, some people criticized when we decided that we wanted to temporarily suspend travel into the United States from individuals who were not Americans or permanent residents who had been in the hot zone in the last 14 days. Some people didn't think that that was what they would do," Redfield told Gupta on Thursday.

"Well, we felt very strongly that our obligation was to do all we can to protect the American public," he added. "I would rather be criticized for over-protecting America than under-protecting America at this stage."

Gupta then asked a very CNN question; "Obviously, Dr. Redfield, the virus doesn't discriminate based on race. Why do we?"

Redfield, who didn't take the bait, replied: "The issue here was first a strong commitment to take care of the Americans that are going to come back, whether they happen to potentially have this virus or not -- and you saw that with the over 800 individuals that the State Department has repatriated and we've assisted in that."

Asymptomatic transmission is highly concerning

One of the more concerning aspects of the hyper-virulent coronavirus is that a person can transmit it to others while showing no symptoms.

"There's been good communication with our colleagues to confirm asymptomatic infection, to confirm asymptomatic transmission, to be able to get a better handle on the clinical spectrum of illness in China. What we don't know though is how much of the asymptomatic cases are driving transmission," said Redfield.

"What I've learned in the last two weeks is that the spectrum of this illness is much broader than was originally presented. There's much more asymptomatic illness," he added. "A number of the confirmed cases that we confirmed actually just presented with a little sore throat."

Meanwhile, CNN notes that while the outbreak has been affecting China since at least December, the CDC has not been invited into the country to help despite offering assistance six weeks ago.

"There's a lot of information we don't know -- that's why I offered to provide assistance, direct assistance, and send our CDC folks over there back on January 6 to really help them gather that information and also to help us see the information first hand that we need to help make the right public health recommendations for our nation," said Redfield.

"That letter has not been responded to yet by the official Chinese government," he added. "We do believe that we're the best in the world in this space and we're ready to help and assist them, but they're an independent nation that has to make that decision that they're going to invite us in."
