BRKG Main Campus Protest thread... Spreading to more campuses AND BEYOND post #816

Nope. I did give OC a. heads up text, however, Iowa is a stand your ground full castle law state and while one is NOT supposed to carry on campus I know plenty of folks that do, both staff and professors.

I do keep an eye on things, right now my hood is filled with first time parents, a few professionals at the univ, and a glut of vet med students. I like it this way, it's nice and quite.

Yes, the med and vet students are no threat. I'm more concerned with the paid idiots from Chicago, the ones who drop off pallets of bricks.

@AvivaKlompas

Someone set up a Go Fund Me page to "throw a rager" for the boys at UNC Chapel Hill who protected the American flag. The description reads:

"Commie losers across the country have invaded college campuses to make dumb demands of weak University Administrators.

But amidst the chaos, the screaming, the anti-semitism, the hatred of faith and flag, stood a platoon of American heroes. Armored in Vineyard Vines and Patagonia, fueled by Zyn and White Claws, these triumphant Brohemians protected Old Glory from the unwashed Marxist horde -- laughing at their shrieks and wails and shielding the Stars & Stripes from Soviet missiles.

These boys... no, men, of the UNC Chapel Hill Pi Kappa Phi, gave the best to America and now they deserve the best.

Help us raise funds to throw this frat the party they deserve, a party worth of the boat-shoed Broleteriat who did their country proud."

Police on Northrop Mall Tuesday morning. A protestor carries a Palestinian Flag.

The University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) cleared an encampment protesting the University’s investment in the Israel-Hamas war on the north end of Northrop Mall early Tuesday morning. Organizers held a response walkout in front of Coffman Union at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Event flyers said the afternoon event was organized to protest “the political repression of Palestine activists on campus.” The morning encampments were calling attention to Israel’s conduct in Gaza. As of Tuesday evening, nine tents had been erected on the green space in front of Coffman Union to continue the protest.

UMPD made nine arrests on trespassing charges: seven students, one faculty member and one person not found in the University registry.

Campus organizers called for the encampments to be set up at 4 a.m. The first arrivals showed up at 3:45 a.m. with 15 tents, said organizer Sorcha Lona.

Lona, an encampment organizer for SDS and one of the nine arrested, said she was on a supply run for personal belongings when she received a text about UMPD’s presence.

She returned to the Mall and joined the organizers next to the tents.

“We were sitting completely still in a circle with our arms linked, chanting in support of Palestine,” Lona said. “They took us one by one, handcuffed us all. I know at least half of us still have marks from the handcuffs.”

According to Lona, the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” encampment at Columbia University inspired the idea for organizers to build their own.

The encampment stood until UMPD arrived at 6 a.m. and told organizers to disperse before 7 a.m., University spokesperson Jake Ricker said in an email statement to The Minnesota Daily.

SDS spokesperson Annie Russell said the people who got arrested were closest to the tents, and everyone else was in the vicinity. She said most of the tents and equipment were lent or donated by supporters and set up by the organization.

“Some of us decided to stay and the rest of us were going to organize the response,” Russell said regarding the arrests. “We don’t want a situation where everyone is taken out at once, but we don’t just wanna give up.”

According to University policy, “rallies, demonstrations or other gatherings of a similar nature of fewer than 100 participants are allowed without a permit in the following outdoor spaces or immediately adjacent to these spaces and buildings.”

However, the policy further states permits are required to display a tent on University outdoor spaces.

University alumni and protestor Scott Smith said the police response to the protest was disproportionate and there were a huge amount of law enforcement officers.

“You can tell someone’s moral ineptitude when they call on such overwhelming force, it’s just wrong,” Smith said. “These students are sending the right message at the right time.”

Students at the protest estimated that the number of police officers ranged from 15 to 25.

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) spokesperson Omar Ali said the ratio of cops to students was around three to one, and the arrests were live-streamed on the SDS Instagram story. Ali said the cops told everyone there they would be arrested.

“We were recording from the outside and were told we would be arrested too,” Ali said.
Ali said UMPD arrested the students and dumped all of their belongings in the trash. He added the materials on the lawn, including tents, water and study materials.

“Their priority was to clean up the encampment before anyone could see it,” Ali said.

“They have never come to a protest, they only come if we are outnumbered.”

Encampment organizers, led by students and faculty, called for the University to financially disinvest in companies in commerce with Israel and its military and prohibit them from recruiting students on campus.

Professor Sima Shakhsari, who attended the protest, said the University invests in Woodward and Lockheed Martin, companies she said are complicit in the violence in Gaza. She said money invested by the University can go straight to companies that are operating in illegal settlements in Palestine, demolishing homes or dropping bombs.

“Woodward bombs were found in Gaza,” Shakhsari said. “Our tax money, our pensions, our student tuitions are going to support the genocide in Gaza right now.”

Shakhsari said University leadership has not had the integrity to facilitate the protests and hear out the students.

SDS spokesperson Merlin Van Alstine said the tents will stay up until the SDS demands regarding divestment, transparency and complicity are met. She said one goal of SDS is the full amnesty of students, faculty and staff that have been repressed.

Ali said student organizations like SJP and SDS have tried for seven consecutive months to get the administration to listen to their demands.

“We met with both presidents, we won a campus referendum, we tried to do petitions, they aren’t listening to any of us,” Ali said. “Now we have protests, and they are going to ban us?”

City council member Robin Wonsley said she is proud to see students standing up for Palestinian lives. Israel-Hamas war student efforts heavily contributed to the Minneapolis City Council 2024 ceasefire resolution decision, she said.

“We had interracial and intergenerational coalitions show up at city hall, time and time again, and say ‘You have to do this,’” Wonsley said. “Our students are going to be super crucial in making that happen.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Update: He’s a Palestinian immigrant who shared videos of Hamas’ spokesman on his Facebook —and Biden wants to start flying Palestinian “refugees” into the U.S.

Looks more like he's 59, bet he's got a fake ID, which was something I learned when I had roommates from Pakistan, it's SOP over there to have fake ID's and passports.

Stefanik calls for deportation of 'pro-Hamas' Columbia students on federal visas

As anti-Israel demonstrations continue to heat up on campuses nationwide, one of the top Republicans in the House called for those protesters spewing antisemitic vitriol who happen to be attending U.S. universities on a foreign (F1) visa to be deported.

"Yes, absolutely. They should be deported," Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said Tuesday on "The Story." "They are pro-Hamas members of a mob who are calling for the eradication of Israel. They are calling for genocide against Jews around the world and in America. It is unthinkable that we are allowing this to happen at U.S. universities."
Stefanik, the House GOP Conference chairwoman, also told Fox News that university presidents who refuse to blunt antisemitism and pro-Hamas ideologies are acting as "apologists."

Stefanik, whose tough questioning of now-former University of Pennsylvania and Harvard presidents over their perceived condoning of antisemitism and threats against Jewish students on campus, said she sees some unfortunate parallels in the behavior of Columbia President Nemat Minouche Shafik.
Shafik earlier this week drew a proverbial red line and promised academic repercussions for students who continued to participate in the tent-filled, day-and-night protests on the quad, but little punishment has been doled out.

Stefanik said she hoped the House Education & the Workforce Committee hearings featuring the other administrators would have served as a reminder to protect students of all faiths and condemn antisemitism.
"We have seen the exact opposite in the case of both Harvard and Penn. While their university presidents were forced out because of their morally bankrupt answers to my question in that historic hearing, we have not seen those schools step up to protect Jewish students," she said.

"Then, of course, we have the Columbia University hearing with President Shafik, where clearly their strategy was say whatever you have to to get through the hearing, to try to avoid the fate of the Penn and Harvard president, but yet their actions — they weren't taking any action on campus to protect Jewish students, to address the rise of antisemitism."
Stefanik said Shafik continues to fail students' safety and allowed a "pro-Hamas mob" to storm and occupy Hamilton Hall.

She said the GOP caucus under Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is also probing whether the legislature has any strings to pull that could quell some of the unrest, whether it be through reexamining federal university funding appropriations, student visas or more.
"American taxpayers don't want to support antisemitism," she said. "They oppose antisemitism, and we know that we're going to continue to stand up for what's morally right."

While Stefanik joined other lawmakers in calling for Shafik's resignation in an April 22 letter, some of her fellow New York lawmakers closer to the chaos expressed themselves differently.
In a joint statement posted to X, formerly Twitter, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., state Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal, D-Manhattan, and other Jewish Democrats in the Empire State pushed back on calls for Shafik to leave, saying the college president shares the same values of "academic freedom, free speech, and… ensuring that all students no matter their religion or beliefs at Columbia feel safe and are protected."

The statement instead condemned "cynical calls for President Shafik's resignation" that would "further Republican goals of attacking liberal institutions."
Nadler, whose district adjoins the Columbia campus, and Rep. Adriano Espaillat of Washington Heights, who represents most of the grounds, on Tuesday condemned "student unlawfulness" while calling for true protections against antisemitism they said would differ from "purely symbolic, empty gestures" offered by House Republicans.

Has anyone see a confirmation of the report that a person released mice tagged with a red circular mark into an encampment of occupiers on a California campus yesterday? It was mentioned in the comment thread of Bear Independent on y o u t u b e yesterday. The poster read it on the x Twitter channel S2. Lots of negative internet search resulted when I searched for S2 states they are independent intelligence group. My skepticism is in high gear and I strongly dislike misinformation being used by the media.

"Come Out of Her My People."

I think the Christians have this trademarked.

In the book of the revelation of John, chapter 18 verse 4: "And I heard another voice from the heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues." God's people (the lost sheep of the house of Israel) are commanded to get out of the doctrines and systems of Babylon.

It actually seems pretty sensible.

There was just an active shooter threat neutralized outside the Mt Horeb Middle school minutes ago, all schools on full lock down. Mt Horeb is about 20 miles west of Madison.

Something very strange going on in Mt Horeb, as of right now, NONE of the students have been released from the Middle School, parents have been waiting all afternoon to reunite with their kids. Absolutely nothing right now from police or school. Everything seems to be very tight lipped right now. There might be more to this, time will tell.

I can’t find much about this either (on X.)
This is going to be a long hot summer in so many ways.
Very little on our local news also, I live about half an hour away. There has been almost nothing, just very short clips from reporters on the ground. Police from all over two counties on the scene though according to a friend. Very weird.

EDIT: I noticed LEO's directing traffic in earlier report were fully equipped including rifles.

The RWDS will not br manned by students. Quite the opposite
Quite true, as to quite the opposite. I severely doubt that anyone in ROTC would have such character flaws to ever want to join a hit squad.

But, the lesser educated may be equally as bad at reading maps, and therefore taking the wrong turn in their lives. They certainly are good at being entrapped by the FBI in sting operations, though, as recent news stories have shown. I say that true right wing people are intelligent, compassionate, loving, kind, peaceful, slow to anger, are about building rather than destroying, conservative, having great self-control, and most of all (what He desires) merciful, therefore being the complete opposite of what it takes to be a member of a death squad.

What you might believe in as "right" wing is likely what I might consider as being "on the edge nut jobs", who lack most of, if not all of, the above righteous qualities. But then, maybe you don't associate right with righteous. Just like the far left, some of those on the far right go by their "feelz" or emotions, rather than thoughtful consideration prior to how they act.

Just where would one recruit sh*t-for-brains people for these death squads? High school seniors, before the military cons them into fighting for multi-national corporations, who's interests are in destabilizing governments, in order to exploit what then becomes cheap foreign natural resources? Or, do we go straight for the neo-Nazis, skinheads, Michigan militias, south-will-rise-againers, incels, and the like?

Meanwhile, at University of Alabama…

@CollinRugg

JUST IN: Trump supporters & pro-Palestine protesters appear to find some common ground as both sides start chanting "F**k Joe Biden!"

Joe Biden *is* uniting our country. Remarkable. The incident reportedly happened at the University of Alabama as documented by @MavenNavarro1.

The protests at Alabama were relatively tame compared to the rest of the country.

Students demanded that the school stop allowing Lockheed Martin to recruit on campus, release a statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and more.
