Azerbaijan launched “an offensive” against Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian PM said amid reports of Azeri aircraft being shot down. Baku insists it is taking “retaliatory measures” in the disputed Armenian-populated region.
Hostilities resumed along the Nagorno-Karabakh border earlier on Sunday, with top officials in both Armenia and Azerbaijan confirming the news.
“The enemy has started an attack on Artsakh,” Armenia’s prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, told his Facebook audience, referring to the Armenian name for the territory claimed by Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh forces “successfully repel the attack,” and the situation is under control, he said.

Separately, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said the military has launched “a counteroffensive operation along the entire front” in a bid to safeguard civilians and contain Armenian forces. The counterattack involves infantry and armored units supported by the air force, Baku says.
As the crisis unfolded, top officials in Baku reported Armenian forces have been shelling Azerbaijani Army positions and populated areas, a claim Yerevan is yet to confirm.
Leaders of Nagorno-Karabakh said Stepanakert, the region’s largest city of over 55,000 people, has also been hit by Azerbaijani artillery. “We urge the population to remain calm and take cover,” a spokesperson for Nagorno-Karabakh president wrote on Facebook.
There were conflicting casualty reports from both sides later in the day. Azerbaijan’s military confirmed that a combat helicopter was shot down but that its crew survived, adding there have been an unspecified number of victims among civilians. It also claimed 12 Armenian air defense systems were hit and destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Armenian Army insisted the Azerbaijani losses were much higher, amounting to two helicopters, three tanks, and three drones. “The enemy sustained casualties in manpower,” Shushan Stepanyan, the spokeswoman for the Armenian Defense Ministry, stated.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been sworn enemies since gaining independence in the 1990s. The focus of their conflict is Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominantly Armenian region landlocked inside Azeri territory, which Baku considers to be under its sovereignty and Yerevan treats as an independent friendly nation.
Armenian militias in Nagorno-Karabakh fought a successful six-year guerrilla war against Azerbaijan.
The latest major flare-up between Armenia and Azerbaijan happened in April 2016, when the nations fought for four days and deployed heavy weapons, including tanks and aircraft. The battles claimed the lives of over 90 troops on each side and killed over a dozen civilians.

I wonder if anyone here can explain to us why this is going on, seemingly out of nowhere. I have a great deal of respect for the Armenian people, after what they endured when so many of them were killed by the Muslim Turks, in the past.
Short answer

Trump is getting the U.S. out of middle east conflict but the Globalist, military industrial complex will not go quietly in the night. The wishes of the people be damned.

Syria/Greece/Iran will side with Armenia.

Turkey/Israel/US(JSIL) will side with Azerbaijan.

Turkey sees Azerbaijan as part of a pan-Turkic state. Also, Azerbaijan allows the Jewish state access to its airbase on Iran’s border. While Armenia sells arms to Iran.
What a tangled mess....
Pretty much. Russia also has a finger in the pie.

The Muslim Turks, coincidentally called; "The Young Turks" killed over a million Christian Armenians, took their property and pushed the rest out of the country in a genocidal march in 1915. Syria offered what little help and asylum it could.

The Armenians still haven't forgotten that kindness. Back during the early part of President Trump's first term, during the war with Al Qaeda, Trump asked; Why (Christian) Armenian was sending medical and humanitarian aid to Syria? Armenia was returning the favor.

When small fry are going full scale battle there is likely one or more larger actors pulling the strings and calling the shots.

Anytime Iran is on one side kind of wonder if they are after a strategic target or more of supporting chaos.

Satan loves chaos and disorder and the world seems to have that in spades in 2020.

Thanks for that piece of history, Old Gray Mare. I hope we don’t get tangled up in it.....wonder if Israel has an interest in getting involved....if so, Trump will follow suit, I fear.
Something to consider, and hold in the back of your/everyone's mind:

Russia (Magog) will side with Armenia (in some commentaries believed to be Togarmah in Eze. 38-9). Togarmah sides with Magog in the invasion of Israel in Eze. 38-9.

While the countries that are signing peace deals do not.

I will grant you that Togarmah=Armenia may be speculation to a certain extent. However history does support that. The purpose of these attacks is also speculation, in prepping for a prophesied invasion, forces must be in the area.

I don't think Trump will get involved because Russia will tell him to stay out and mind his own business. And with Trump's reluctance to get involved in foreign wars, he won't. Getting out of one, someone else started has been difficult. It's almost like Hotel California.

However this might prove Trump as a Nationalist, or Globalist. In that Nationalist stays out, Globalist gets in.

Oddly enough, Azerbaijan is I believe, the ONLY Islamic state that is friendly with the west. I think they were also a republic before the Soviet empire too. Armenia is a Christian state that mostly dislikes the west.

Thread: The entire conflict in Karabakh was likely planned or pushed by Ankara to create a new crisis so the ruling party can invade another country, after having invaded Syria, Iraq and Libya. NATO, EU, UN and US appeasement of Ankara created this.

We can see how it was orchestrated by Ankara by reading the propaganda pro-government media there; orchestrated first through threatening Armenia, then military flights, then claims of "PKK"; this is part of the narrative Ankara always puts forward Image

We can read the tweets in sequences at Daily Sabah and Yeni Safak and then the statements from Ankara: "Erdogan calls Aliyev and tells him that Turkey is ready to help Azerbaijan in every possible means against Armenia"

We can see how first the internet was shut down by Baku to control information, while telling foreign media about Armenian "aggression"...before 7 hours later claiming Azerbaijan "liberated" areas in "illegally occupied" Karabakh. Narrative switched quickly. Image

Ever since the illegal invasion, occupation and depopulation of Afrin the message was sent that any invasion is acceptable by Turkey and that there will never be serious attempts at peace. Russia, Iran and China understand this. Other countries in the Middle East know too.

It's hard to keep up with the social media rapidly changing narrative, but you'll see that what began as claims Armenia "attacked" and "imported PKK" is linked to justification for the next phase. No evidence of Armenia "attack" or "PKK" though. But by day two it won't matter. Image

The overall context of the Russia-Turkey nexus, regarding air defense and Russia playing both sides is always interesting,

The tweets by @RALee85 are all necessary reading, I'm screenshoting a few because I want to show sequence since July, last two are important Image

The messaging on the clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan are interesting, on the one hand the claims that "Armenia attacked"...on the other celebratory pro-Turkey social media detailing the "liberation" and conquest of areas by Azerbaijan... Image Image

The clear message from Turkey is of a direct alliance against Armenia today; that's not a secret, it's official. Image

As information moves quickly, if this sequence is correct, along with the mobilization on both sides; rapidly this will become a larger conflict. Image

Armenia is asking international community, which generally does nothing, to do something...he doesn't realize that the international community no longer exists;

Russia could use this to up the ante in Idlib;

Ahhh no.

Armenia geographically fell under the former Soviet Union. Having a well educated and productive population it did alright under Soviet rule. If the US bases weren't in Turkey and Turkey wasn't part of NATO The story might be very different.

Yes Armenia is a Christian state and no they don't dislike the west. There is a significant population of Armenians and their descendants here in the US.

Armenians are long on family, church and education. Think Greece only surrounded by muslim countries. Part of their church service is to "Pray for the victories of Christian Princes and Kings.". That includes President Trump.

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Fighting erupted anew Sunday between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over the disputed separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh and a top territorial official said 16 people were killed and more than 100 wounded, while Azerbaijan’s president said his military has suffered losses.

Armenia also claimed that two Azerbaijani helicopters were shot down and three Azerbaijani tanks were hit by artillery, but Azerbaijan’s defense ministry rejected that claim.

Heavy fighting broke out in the morning in the region that lies within Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since 1994 at the end of a separatist war. It was not immediately clear what sparked the fighting, the heaviest since clashes in July killed 16 people from both sides.

Nagorno-Karabakh authorities reported that shelling hit the region's capital of Stepanakert and the towns of Martakert and Martuni. Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan also said Azerbaijani shelling hit within Armenian territory near the town of Vardenis.

Artur Sarkisian, deputy head of the Nagorno-Karabakh army, said that 16 people were killed and more than 100 wounded. It wasn't immediately clear if the figure included both soldiers and civilians. Earlier, the Armenian human rights ombudsman said a woman and child had been killed in the shelling.

Another Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman, Shushan Stepanyan, said “the Armenian side” shot down two helicopters and hit three tanks.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev ordered martial law be imposed in some regions of the country and called for a curfew in major cities.

In a televised address to the nation, Aliyev said that “there are losses among the Azerbaijani forces and the civilian population as a result of the Armenian bombardment,” but didn't give further details. He also claimed that “many units of the enemy’s military equipment have been destroyed.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov “is conducting intensive contacts in order to induce the parties to cease fire and start negotiations to stabilize the situation,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, called on the sides to stop fighting. The long-unsuccessful negotiations for resolving the territory's status has been conducted under OSCE auspices.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian on Sunday said the country could reexamine whether to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as independent. Such a move would likely obstruct further negotiations.

Foreign Minister Javad Zarif of Iran, which borders both Azerbaijan and Armenia, said “We call for an immediate end to hostilities and urge dialogue to resolve differences. Our neighbors are our priority and we are ready to provide good offices to enable talks.”

Turkey’s ruling party spokesman Omer Celik tweeted: “We vehemently condemn Armenia’s attack on Azerbaijan. Armenia has once again committed a provocation, ignoring law.” He promised Turkey would stand by Azerbaijan and said, “Armenia is playing with fire and endangering regional peace.”

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin also condemned Armenia.

“Armenia has violated the cease-fire by attacking civilian settlements ... the international community must immediately say stop to this dangerous provocation," Kalin tweeted.

Mostly mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh — a region around 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles) or about the size of the U.S. state of Delaware — lies 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Armenian border. Local soldiers backed by Armenia also occupy some Azerbaijani territory outside the region.
