MagLight finally going LED.

Finally!

I've got the Nite Ize LED conversion in my Mini-Mag right now and have decided to convert he rest of them as well.

Last weekend I'd decided I'd bite the bullet and get the $40 focusable LED conversion for the big Mags too, but now I may wait to see what Mag comes out with.

Dear Maglite.com Visitor:

Thank you for your interest in Mag Instrument and its products. We are pleased to report that Mag will soon be adding MAG-LED™ flashlights to its product line.

If these products have been a long time coming, it’s because the MAG-LED™ Technology has taken a long time to develop to the point where it is feasible to make an LED flashlight that meets Mag Instrument's high standards of quality, durability, style and function.

Now, after years of research & development, testing and refinement, Mag Instrument is committed to introducing, in early 2006, a line of MAG-LED™ flashlights. Like Mag's incandescent-lamp flashlights, these newest members of the Maglite® flashlight family will have the style, performance, benefits and features that both professionals and consumers have come to expect from a Maglite® flashlight, including the fact that they are built for a lifetime of service. The Maglite® design tradition will be instantly recognizable in them, and they will offer the beam-focusing capability that has always been a feature of Mag® flashlights, AND MORE!

Again, thank you for your interest in Mag Instrument and its products. We look forward to the rollout of the MAG-LED™ flashlights in the near future.

Sincerely,
The Maglite Team

It's about time. MagLite was taking a beating by not doing this sooner ... so it is waaaaaay past time. I was thinking about them needing to do this asap the other day. I've got as many MagLites as I do guns probably, in all various shapes and sizes and colors. You cannot beat them for durability, looks, functionality, and boy oh boy do I have some stories to tell to support that, but the LED thing was costing them.

There is nothing like a six D cell MagLite on your shoulder, and a pistol in the other hand, when checking out things that go bump in the night.

Thanks for the heads-up.

< Yes, I do look like that.
Mag Instruments has a long history among small-scale flashlight makers - they're despised with a passion! The company has a tradition of predatory patenting - patenting obvious ideas and using these patents to drive the smaller makers out of business via patent suits that they know they'd lose in an actual court case but also know the smaller company they are suing cannot afford to pursue.

For example, didja know that Mag had a patent on a flashlight being able to stand upright on its endcap? They used that one to push half a dozen companies under until they picked on a big enough company to fight back. (The rumor is that they pickde a fight with Surefire, and Surefire threatened to fight to the last moment. That is, however, only rumor - neither Mag nor anyone else has come out and discussed the situation openly.) They acquiesced and AFAIK their patent on self-standing lights has slipped into obscurity, and is no longer being actively enforced.

MagLites are the best of the low-end lights. Hopefully their LED offerings won't be plagued by the problems that keep their incandescents relegated to low-end status. And hopefully they won't go predatory to try to drive some of the high-end makers under.

oO, who has a few MagLites, all of them converted into other things...

I wanted a blue Mini Mag for Christmas and didn't get it or anything else for that matter. So, :D , I was in Sam's today and they had a set of the big one, the mini, good batteries and brackets for $12.99. Couldn't pass it up. I am really suprised how bright they are with just the regular bulbs. And I didn't know that they were focusable until I read this thread.
I gave my husband the big one to keep under his seat in the truck because it is also good as a weapon if necessary . He had an old one with only rechargable batteries that didn't hold a charge for more than a day anymore and was faint (15 years old) The little one is in my BOB (Bug out Briefcase)

The local Wally World has the Maglite AA "L.E.D. Uprade" in stock for $4.92 - in the flashlite section of sporting goods. Prolly had a dozen or more.

Hard to believe the brilliance and 'whiteness' of the 3-LED upgrade...WOW!!! This is a winner.

The LEDs are long lasting - but if you look carefully there's some surface mount stuff plus what looks like a small electrolytic cap. (the ones in mine are grey) in the circuit board holding the LEDs. Hope the caps last!?!?

our local Wally world doesn't carry the LED conversions, I would love to have a few for my three Mini Mags.

I did buy some other branded LED's and really like them alot.

My DH and I would like to get some LED lights. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best brand(s) to get? I know I saw on TB2K some time ago a thread about a LED flashlight that you could pump up. We'd like to get a few of them, too. However, I can't find the thread and can't find a site on the internet that has them.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated! :p

Home Despot has some VERY nice aluminum body 5 LED 3 AAA batt sets (2 for 7 or 9 bux IIRC)....

Check Wally World for a handful of different types (I kind of like the Surefire knock offs that they have that take the CR235 (or whatever that stubby bat is)

I ALSO like the 3 LED 1 Halogen 3AAA bat headlite for under 15....

Understand that my working at the Outdoor School has made me a SERIOUS devotee of headlites.....they are ABSOLUTELY IRREPLACEABLE for outdoor uses...

The big multi battery MAG lights are so so IMHO as flashlights. However, those I know in law enforcement just love their ability to double as a bad ass club. One whack with those suckers creates a world of hurt on the perps.

The ability to widen or narrow the focus, use of commonly available batteries, relatively inexpensive price, and widely available bulbs is what has kept me with MagLites all these years.

Now if I can get all that and LED too that's gravy.
