Some good info on the unstable geology of the St. Francois mountain region

Aerial Geologist: St. Francois Mountains Trip - Missouri

The Shut-Ins are a result of the East Fork Black River eroding down through the originally overlying sedimentary layers (which are easily eroded) and eventually hitting the igneous rock below, which is more resistant to erosion. Due to this resistance, a "shut-ins" occurs, or a section of stream which is channeled through a narrow gorge.

We were told to watch when it steps up to 3's and 4's on the New Madrid.

Just to let you know after reading this last night, I was in a panic. My youngest and his wife are in Mexico for a wedding and then were going to tour. I didn't know where he was. Thank God, last night I heard from him and he's on the other coast in Tulum now. The wedding was on the West Coast so I didn't know. Prayers for the people affected by this!

Neither here nor there.
Why do you say that?

When the core of the earth dies, then there will be truly extinct volcanoes. There's one in New Mexico that's supposed to be extinct and surprise, surprise, magma suddenly started moving under the so called extinct volcanic complex. Ditto the so called extinct volcano in Utah.
