Misc Lousy Can Openers

I am really fed up with the can openers that you get most places.

I had one of those that cut through the lip of the can, lasted for years, wore it out, but the Wife doesn't like it, so....

Wally World and grocery store openers seem to last for about six cans..... Grrrrrr

So, I'm hoping for recommendations on a good, well made, can opener

I've only had this for about 4 months so I'm still inside your 6-month frame but so far I really, really like it.
  • Hands free
  • Cordless - I use Eneloops in it.
  • Works on any can I've asked it to open.
  • Leaves no sharp or jagged parts. (I've often worried about can opener cuts during SHTF with canned goods)
  • Small, lightweight, stores anywhere
Ok, they have a new one out, 2.0, ordered!!

I found the thread...the discussion starts on page six, post 223. I'm not sure there's much more info than you will find in this thread but I'll post the link just in case you are interested.

Wallyworld, no-name can opener.

Stamped "made in USA" on the handle.

Something like this one, but not even Good Cook brand.

Was 5 bux maybe, has lasted as well as any name brand ones.

The problem I'm seeing is the cans themselves.

They keep getting thinner and openers don't have the shear tolerances to cut them.

I don't think it's that they are just getting thinner. It's like some are thinner, but others are thicker. The standardization is gone.

SwingAway brand. Amazon carries several models. They aren't as good as they used to be, but I'm currently using one that's at least 15 years old...

Summerthyme

Go to most restaurant supply stores and look in their manual can opener area. There is probably only one or two options, but swing away is usually one of them because they are the best on #10 cans.

I have the EZ-DUZ-IT can opener. It is made in the USA and is built like a tank - Really heavy Duty. I have had one for about 7 years and it is still going strong. Available at a lot of hardware stores and Amazon.

It's also the labels and glue they use.

I always wanted one of those counter clamp openers, the one that has what looks like a propeller crank on top? If your gonna do something...

I have done the concrete thing before, works really well and fast.

The last thing I need during a disaster is someone getting injured, and some of the idiots around here would find a way to do it.

I have a half-dozen Swing-Aways in various places. No need to use alternatives when opening cans.

I found a couple of vintage ones on eBay that were "mostly new". They cost a pretty penny compared to the junk from China, but they worked great. I then found several "repair kits" for them as well, and stocked them away.

They were well worth the money.

P-38, Best can opener ever. :)
Most definitely, also conveniently carried on a key ring, non electric, look at all the energy you save.
Also, very multi use, as a flat head screwdriver, turned on 45 Degree angle it can be used as a Phillips head, and a very mini knife, if sharpened, it can cut baling twine, small cords.
Just saying from experience.

FYI - found on EZ-DUZ-IT Can Opener. Made in the USA Can Opener. The World's Best Can Opener? Restaurant Can Opener. Formerly Swing-A-Way Can Opener

... "Here's the story: Considered the best can opener in the world, the Swing-A-Way entered the market in 1954. Some of these can openers are still working after more than 50 years. Unfortunately, Swing-A-Way Company sold out to China in 2008. The only way you can find the genuine Swing-A-Way is to find an old one somewhere. Something curious happened in 2011. It turns out that the John J. Steuby Co. in Hazelwood, Missouri was the actual manufacturer of Swing-A-Way can openers for Amco, for almost 50 years. Steuby decided to just start making them again, and instead of stamping it “Swing-A-Way”, they are packaging it as "EZ-DUZ-IT" and stamping it “Made In USA”. So if you buy a new can opener marked “Swing-A-Way” you get an official Chinese knockoff, and if you buy one stamped "Made in USA" and packaged as “EZ-DUZ-IT” from freckleface.com you get the unofficial real thing Made in the USA and in our opinion the best can opener in the world." ...
