JUST got a local PD alert on my cellphone-don't know what it's about but thought to pass it on. Message as follows-

We are aware of reports from communities throughout the National Capitol Region of a loud "boom" this afternoon. There is no threat at this time.

There are '16's up out of Andrews around 15-18 k feet. Heard as far as Annapolis MD. Nobody has a clue apparently. I'd say reentry vehicle, orbital object decceerarith etc.

Don't know what's up but if we end up blasted into the atmosphere-then Alf says "It's been fun".

My first guess is the boys down at Pax River are playing with a new, fast toy while most of the base's workers aren't on base.

Probably on autopilot in a situation like Payne Stewart's death when his Lear Jet lost cabin pressurization killing everyone on board while the plane flew on until it ran out of fuel. If it was a case of the pilot having health issues (heart attack or stroke) with no one else aboard the same sort of thing could have happened.

If ANFO was used to hit tunnels locally Arlington national cemetery would collapse. The hill most of it is sitting on would become flat as a flitter. It's a lot of real estate there, not to mention the ANCC at the Pentagon should that have been torched. If that were the case the Pentagon would have a basement with it's own Olympic sized swimming pool too. Not to mention the Georgetown area of DC, the streets would collapse into the ground too.
Finally, the original George W would need new digs too-the estate would fall off it's cliff into the Potomac.

Yes. Stingers at the WH, Stingers and Patriots at the Navy Yard and the SAMs at Ft. Belvoir certainly would have been activated.

If the Citation was over 18K feet most likely it was flying a V way/high altitude airway. FAA controls V ways in this area out of it's location in Leesburg, VA.

In the northern Shen valley of Va here, I was outside when this boom was heard and I didn’t hear a thing. Heard no unusual air traffic, I’m a plane nerd so I pay attention to that. Quiet afternoon, all I heard was some IAD traffic

This is so puzzling.......... So the family did not get off at their NY destination and had the pilot turn around? And then he has a heart attack or something and dies, and nobody knows how to fly the plane so it crashes? I don't get it.

The aircraft was headed to MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, New York, east of the New York City metropolitan area in Long Island. According to FlightAware, the aircraft circled back from the MacArthur Airport area and flew southwest over New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland before approaching restricted air space in the D.C. area.
