Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Sunday afternoon for an apparent medical issue, the Pentagon announced Sunday.

Austin, 70, was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed in Maryland around 2:20 p.m. on Sunday after experiencing symptoms “suggesting an emergent bladder issue,” Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement Sunday.

The deputy secretary of Defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were notified, and notifications were also sent to the White House and Congress, Ryder added.

Austin is “retaining” his functions and duties of the office, while the deputy secretary is prepared should they need to assume duties, per Ryder’s statement.

It comes just under two weeks after Austin’s Jan. 29 return to the Pentagon after a weeks-long hospitalization in early January.

He was hospitalized on Jan. 1 for an infection stemming from a Dec. 22 surgery for prostate cancer. The New Year’s emergency placed Austin in the intensive care unit (ICU) for days and forced Austin to carry out his duties from home for nearly two weeks after being released from Walter Reed.

His hospitalization sparked controversy on Capitol Hill after lawmakers learned the White House and Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks were not made aware of his hospitalization until Jan. 4. Austin did not reveal his prostate cancer diagnosis until Jan. 9, nearly a month after an early December health screening discovered the cancer.

Austin earlier this month apologized for his failure to notify administration officials and admitted he “did not handle this right.”

He told reporters he never directed his staff to keep secret the hospitalization at Walter Reed, but acknowledged his failure to notify.

“I want to be crystal clear: We did not handle this right. I did not handle this right. I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis,” Austin said during a Feb. 1 press conference. “I should have also told my team and the American public, and I take full responsibility. I apologize to my teammates and to the American people.”

The incident prompted the Pentagon to launch a 30-day internal review of policies and procedures, while the Department of Defense inspector general is also investigating the incident.

The White House has already changed its policy based on the incident and ordered Cabinet secretaries to notify when they are unable to perform their duties.

In the wake of mounting scrutiny from House GOP defense hawks and a formal inquiry by House Armed Services Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), Austin has agreed to testify on Feb. 29 before the committee.

Sec Def Austin Back In Hospital

Micaela Burrow on February 11, 2024

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was taken to the hospital again on Sunday afternoon, Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement, in a change after the secretary’s secret hospitalization in January triggered a firestorm of criticism.

Austin’s security staff brought him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at 2:20 p.m. on Sunday for “symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue,” the statement read. The secretary will retain his duties, although the statement pointed out that Austin’s deputy, the top U.S. military officer, the White House staff and other officials have been notified within hours, a major break from January when key national security officials did not know of his absence.

There was no indication that the ailment was connected to Austin’s prior operation to cure prostate cancer or the subsequent interventions and therapy to manage complications that emerged from the operation.

“Today, at approximately 2:20 pm, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue,” Ryder said in the statement. “The Deputy Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have been notified. Additionally, White House and Congressional notifications have occurred.”

Austin faced criticism from Congress and others after his closeted two-week stay to address complications that arose from a Dec. 22 procedure to treat prostate cancer.

Roughly one week after he underwent non-invasive surgery to treat prostate cancer that was not disclosed to the president or other national security and defense officials, Austin was transported in an ambulance to Walter Reed after experiencing nausea and severe pain in his legs and abdominal area. Doctors placed him in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Jan. 2 to treat a urinary tract infection, but he received only non-surgical care and never underwent general anesthesia.

The public did not learn of his hospitalization until Jan. 5, shortly after Congress was notified and just one day after President Biden, Austin’s deputy and top national security officials received the news. He resumed full duties as secretary of defense that same day.

“At this time, the Secretary is retaining the functions and duties of his office. The Deputy Secretary is prepared to assume the functions and duties of the Secretary of Defense, if required,” Ryder said in the statement Sunday.

“Secretary Austin traveled to the hospital with the unclassified and classified communications systems necessary to perform his duties,” Ryder said. He promised to provide updates on Austin’s condition as soon as possible.

Austin had just returned to work in the Pentagon on Jan. 29 after weeks of recovery at his home in Virginia since his discharge from Walter Reed r on Jan. 15. Doctors had said he was expected to make a full recovery.

Uh, whuh?? The prostate is connected to the bladder. Now if he had severe prostate cancer, they removed it. Then the connection from bladder to the urethra is stretched. I can only think of 3 possibilities here.
1. He got a bladder infection, likely from issues of surgery and/or catheter.
2. He has bladder cancer, possibly an extension from his prostate cancer.
3. He has a system cancer spread to lower abdomen (maybe colon) and vascular or lymph system causing the pain in the legs.

Could be a simple bladder infection and antibiotics will knock it out... but I think not.

There is one other cause, and that is the poison shots. Blood clots in legs would be painful. He is cooked.

Well, if you know who Ward Carroll is, and CDR Salamander and Sal Mercogliano, THEY all speak of Ms. Hicks as being well worth her salary and position. Sharp as well as intuitive and aggressive if need be are terms that they toss around.

E2AD: and all 3 have worked with her.

Actually if he had radiation for prostate cancer, he could have developed hemorrhagic cystitis. That is what my husband died from because it caused blood clots which clogged the ureter and sepsis developed. He had to be in icu because blood pressure was unstable.
