we have 2 litters a year from 3 females, biggest litter we ever had was 13. the litter we just had a few months ago was 6, but 2 didnt make it, puppies are so much fun. I like to let them loose in the yard and they crawl all over you , so much fun

EDIT. reread and that didnt sound right, we are not having 6 litters a year,

2 of the females have 1 litter each, the third female has none, so they arnt being constantly having puppies, and we rotate who has the year off

I can't wait until they are big enough for that.

I am bracing myself and the family that some may not make it.

My son regrets having our black lab fixed but given her personality I think it is a good thing for her. She's also ... well not small, but on the smaller side for a black lab female. At 8 she is also starting to show her age. Puppies are glorious. My brother got puppy piled by beagles on my grandfather's farm when we were kids. Looked just like that old coca cola commercial except with noisy beagles. LOL

That's 11 right?

Big dogs, big litters. :)

The largest I've played Midwife/Godmother to was 19 (live). Out of one of my favorite Treeing Walker Hounds ever! She was more than a little overwhelmed, but with some extra TLC and lots of encouragement, she was a heck of a mom.

Congrats!

Dottie and Sasha whelped within two weeks of each other. Dot had 10 and Sash had 12. They were raised as puppies together (Sash was a little older) They mothered each other's pups. Either could go in the other's nest without growls or warnings, lick, clean, and dicipline. Dot's two sisters (Miss Belle and Sugarfoot would occasionally do it too.

When they got big enough to get out of the nest. past the pen enclosure, and into the house, it was like herding cats?! Outside, watch out. Glorious days I will treasure forever. Enjoy yours. Spoil
'em while you got 'em! Lots and lots of pics and video because they grow up sooo fast.

Had a friend who used to breed goldens. He said he had a trick for selling the runts. When prospective buyers came to look at the pups, he would have one of his kids cuddling the runt and tell them it was "not for sale."
"Why?"
"Because that one is the most affectionate and the smartest of the lot."

He always got $100.00 bux more for the runts.

The small female Goldens seem to ALWAYS be the treasure of the litter.
What I'd be looking for, and happily pay an extra $100!

CONGRATS!! We bred Goldens growing up and once had a litter of 12. Momma dog only had 6 "spigots" and I remember my mom put red fingernail polish on 6 puppy's tails and left the other 6 with no marking. We would rotate them to make sure they all got milk and none got stunted. When one group was getting milk, the other group got formula then we'd swap. Helped make sure they all lived and the smaller ones didn't get pushed away. Also helped give the mom a rest. may be something to consider with such a big litter coming. Again, congrats! They will be so precious and entertaining.

Budreaux was the Sire of both my litters. He was a runt who somehow grew into a 96 pound hug bug. Eveybody was put off by his size, but he was affectionate and had a sense of humor like most 'houlas do. That little trick is exactly how it worked on us. Slick and very effective.

I already plan on doing this. The puppy milk is on its way. I figure mom is going to need the help.

Our Golden Retriever is expecting and is due the last week of the month. Yesterday the vet did an x-ray to get a puppy count so we would know how many to expect.

View attachment 296295

The vet lost count and isn't exactly sure how many....
I know my wife would want to kill me and love the puppy but just for shits and giggles got any spares and where are you located.

Natural selection (survival of the fittest) is always best......but when ya got more puppies than nipples.....I always make sure the "runts" get some hang time.....push 'em in by hand....mom's colostrum is good for them before ya start them on that powdered milk from the feed store about 4 weeks old

After clean up the plan is for them all to nurse right away so they get colostrum. I also have some colostrum supplement coming in as a back up. I know it isn't as good mom's, but it at least provides the proteins necessary to help the gut start to deal.

If turns out we need to supplement, I plan on doing a rotation of the pups. But the plan is really only supplement the biggest and the fattest and leave the runts with mom, unless absolutely necessary. I have great success with doing that with others species where we have had to step in.

Agreed, especially this close to Halloween...

LOL. It's not April 1sr. That is how they count by looking at skulls and spines on an x-ray . I'll see if I can get on posted so you can see what it looks like in there.

They were sent as PDFs so I have to do extra steps. I'll get to it later today. I have some stock up errands to do this morning.
