EBOLA Lewiston Idaho Veternarian's Letter to the Editor re: Ebola, Nails it!

The present Ebola crisis in the world is frightening. I have submitted the following letter to the editor of the Lewiston Morning Tribune:

Editor, Lewiston Morning Tribune:

If I wish to import a horse into the United States from Liberia or any African country other than Morocco, the horse needs to undergo a 60 day quarantine period at a USDA approved quarantine facility prior to mingling with the general population of horses in this country. Africa has a disease called African Horse Sickness that does not exist in the US; this is the way we have kept it out of this country. African Horse Sickness does not cause disease in people, only horses; our government has determined that it would be devastating to the US horse industry if it were to come here.

The United States (and virtually all other countries) require a myriad of tests and often quarantine prior to bringing in a foreign animal.

I can’t legally cross state lines in the United States with a horse or cow without a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian stating that the animal has been inspected and found free of infectious disease. In most cases blood tests are also required. In fact I can’t legally cross the Snake River and ride my horse in Idaho without a health certificate and a negative blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia.

I’m not complaining; the United States of America, the States of Idaho and Washington as well as the other 48 states take the health of our livestock very seriously, and we have a very good record at keeping foreign animal diseases out of our country. I am happy to do my part to maintain biosecurity in our animal population.

If I am a resident of Liberia incubating Ebola, to enter the United States all I need to do is present a valid visa, and lie when asked if I have been exposed to Ebola. Within hours (no quarantine required) I can be walking the streets of any city in the United States.

I feel very fortunate to live in a country that values our animals so highly.

IIRC you can't even transport fire wood across state lines for fear of spreading bugs infestations.

Now give it 48 hours and obama will issue an executive edict to allow infected animals into the United States and overriding any and all state laws pertaining to infectious animal disease's.

I can't even order garlic or onions, potatoes, and some fruit trees from seed catalogs to come into Idaho. QUARANTINED

Amazing comparison and well-done by the good Doc. I just had my pooch checked out at the Vet and obtained a Certificate of Good Health together with her vaccination records (at considerable expense I might add as she really didn't need a check-up). All this so that we can bring her across the border into the U.S. It's all just mind boggling not to mention extremely disturbing to see illegals flooding over the U.S. southern border (who doubts that the U.S. child deaths from that respiratory virus not seen up here for many, many years is connected to this invasion and subsequent relocation across the U.S.) and to realize that people from infected West Africa are still coming to the U.S. unimpeded and in sizeable numbers each week.

When I moved from NY to CA two of my dogs flew and the third, along with the cat, rode in the car with me. The flyers needed up-to-date shots and health certificates. To be on the safe side, I got certificates for the riders too.

FWIW, I am tired of the enterovirus being called a "mystery virus". Really? It's a mystery?

I was driving a Ryder truck from Louisiana to Florida one year. I was stopped at a weigh station and asked to open the back. They were making sure I wasn't bringing any plants into Florida. I could have been carrying an infected Liberian and I would have been fine.

It was very difficult when my daughter was assigned to Hawaii to take her two cats and bypass quarantine. She had folders two inches thick with their medical history. I was watching them when she was in Iraq and my vet did the vaccines and didn't have the manufacturer's lot #. It took a couple of weeks for the vet to get the drug maker to track all the needed info. Hawaii has no rabies because of the quarantine rules.

My dog can travel in and out of Hawaii because he was born in Hawaii and has his shots from here, but if you have a mainland animal you want to bring into Hawaii you have to have health certificate by mainland vet and still you can get Quarentine overnight depending on the flight arrival time. Without vet health certification from mainland its a 3 month Quarentine. UNLESS you are Prez then your dogs don't get Quarentine.

Yes. Our standards and values are being diminished by the day. It's a race to the bottom of third World status.
