Echoes of War:
Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, owned an amphibious car and used it to terrify his guests as a party trick. He'd take an unsuspecting visitor for a drive around his Texas ranch, then aim the car straight at a lake while screaming that the brakes had failed and they were all going to drown. The guest would panic as the car plunged into the water, and then, instead of sinking, the car would just start floating and puttering along, because it was a boat the whole time. LBJ would sit there cackling at how scared they were. He pulled this on cabinet officials and dignitaries.
His ranch driving was insane in general. Johnson would tear around the property in a Lincoln convertible while drinking Cutty Sark scotch out of a big foam cup. When his cup ran low, he'd stick his arm out the window and rattle the ice without slowing down, and a Secret Service agent would literally have to sprint up to the moving car, grab the cup, refill it with scotch, and run it back to his hand.
He was also famously crude and physically overbearing. LBJ liked to conduct business while sitting on the toilet, and he'd invite aides right into the bathroom mid-meeting, leaving the door open and waving them closer if they tried to look away. It was a power move, designed to keep people off balance.
And he genuinely caused a national scandal over his dog. In 1964 he picked up his beagle, named "Him," by the ears in front of photographers. The photo of the President dangling a yelping dog by its ears set off a furious wave of protest from animal lovers across the country. Johnson brushed it off, insisting the dog liked it.
So the real Lyndon B. Johnson: scared guests half to death with a car that turned into a boat, made the Secret Service run scotch refills to his speeding convertible, held meetings from the toilet on purpose, and got dragged nationwide for lifting his dog by the ears.
That's a President.
