How many gallons--roughly , is a set of filters good for? 40 gallons or 4000? (say rainwater collections).

The cleaner the water, the longer the filters last. For city water, life would be about 20,000 gallons. For lake water, IMO perhaps 5,000, but that's a guess.

A set of black berkey elements can purify around 6000 gallons, or 3000 gallons per element.

My personal experience was that they lasted about 3 1/2 years before I changed the elements.

Dennis,

The white ceramic filters used to do upwards or 15000 gallons, but have since been downgraded to around 500 gallons per filter element because of the way they are now made by Doulton.

I had problems with the black filters falling apart. Before purchasing, you should check around and see if they have really addressed the issues. My understanding is that the black filters were not performing for a couple years. Not a good deal, especially if you intend to buy extras to store with preps.

The black berkey elements had problems during the first half of 2011, with minimal problems arising the 2nd half of 2011. The problems have been resolved, and the base has been redesigned. We personally had elements that were from 2009, and they lasted 3 1/2 years, before we needed to replace them. We are currently using elements that are around 4 months old, and we have had no problems.

Is this saying that a 270.00 filter set with replacement elements at 100.00/set are only good for 500 gallons?? ...or maybe I'm missing something. TIA--Bill

He are some questions I have as a Berkey owner:

- The old filter candles (white) were good for thousands of gallons, depending on the initial water quality. What has changed EXACTLY, and why are the white candles only good for 500 gallons? Please be specific.

- The white candles could be "scrubbed" with a Scotch-brite pad to clean them so they could be used longer. Is this still true of the white candles, and IS IT TRUE AT ALL FOR THE BLACK CANDLES?

- The black candles appear to be a "combination" filter, with the addition of activated charcoal. Yet, from all I've read, the usefulness of the activated charcoal ceases long before the rest of the filtration capability is depleted. How many gallons (assuming "city water") can one expect before the charcoal is dead vs. how many gallons before the remaining capability is dead?

- What is the MSRP for the black candles? And the white ones? (Per pair or singly, and please note which price is being quoted, individual or pair)

- What is the "street price" for them?

Thanks!

The white ceramic filters are good for 500 gallons per element.
The Black Berkey Elements will purify up to 3000 gallons per element.

I apologize if it was not clear.

Dennis,

In the last couple years, Doulton redesigned the White Ceramic elements. They redesigned a part of the element near the base.
The white ceramic filters can be scrubbed, the black berkey elements can be scrubbed but we recommend lightly. We also recommend back flushing the black berkey elements every 3-6 months.

If you have white ceramic filter sets that are older than a couple years, they will filter over 15000 gallons per set.

The black Berkey Elements will last up to 3000 gallons, testing was done to determine this number.

MSRP on the Black Berkey Elements is 109 dollars, but we sell them for 107 dollars per set.

What about my other questions regarding the charcoal component vs. the filtration capability lifespan?

From the testing that was done, the black berkey elements work up to the 3000 gallon mark, and then start to have breakthrough. Coconut Shell Carbon is one of the main components and has shown to be able to handle up to 3000 gallons of usage.
