ROME — A huge boulder unleashed by a landslide in northern Italy narrowly missed a farmhouse, destroyed a barn and came to a stop in vineyards.
A second boulder stopped just feet (about a meter) behind the traditional stone farmhouse in the rocky region of Alto-Adige.
The surreal sight was captured in a series of dramatic photographs. Nobody was injured in the tumble from mountains overlooking the village of Ronchi di Termeno. Some other boulders from the Jan. 21 landslide blocked roads.

That's one way of mineralizing the soil.

Look at that new berm "protecting" the tower nearby. If that boulder had come down a bit to the side it would have taken it out completely.

Notice that there are two boulders down in the vineyard. Only one of them was from this incident, the other has been there for some time. It has happened before. Wonder if anyone made the connection with that older boulder and the hillside above?

PARIS—An enormous boulder hurtled off a mountain and smashed into a tourist train in the French Alps on Saturday, derailing it on the mountainside and killing two passengers, officials said. Nine people were injured.

The force of the boulder caved in the side of the train, which takes a leisurely three hours to travel about 150 kilometres from Nice to Dignes-les-Bains.

“A rock the size of an automobile came off the mountainside and slammed into the first car of the train,” Jean Ballester, mayor of nearby Annot, told BFM television. “There are unfortunately two dead.”

The uninjured among the approximately 30 passengers were evacuated to Annot, a little more than half-way through the train route, Ballester said. Two rescue helicopters were dispatched to the remote area, he said.

France’s top security official, Manuel Vals, confirmed two dead and nine injured.

The train was still dangling dramatically from the tracks hours after the accident, the crushed front car nose-down in the snowy woods.

The train travels along the mountains on track that regularly receives snow and rock falls, but regional transport official Jean-Yves Petit said it is considered safe, even in winter.

“The track isn’t unusually dangerous,” Petit told BFM.

The scenery to Entrevaux is mountainous and spectacular, the train runs along the valley floor with mountains towering above

The train des merveilles route to Tende is also mountainous and spectacular and the train runs on the shoulder of mountains giving a more panoramic view.

The train follows the salt route that used to be undertaken by people with mules. There was no coastal; road until relatively recently so people had to travel north and over the mountains and descend into Italy

<section class="article-content"> An enormous boulder plunged from a height 2,624 feet and plowed through a 300-year-old barn in a small town in northern Italy on Jan. 21, destroying and leveling it. A piece of a mountain detached from a cliff, turning into several boulders that measured between 3,000 and 4,000 cubic meters.
The house attached to the barn in the town of Ronchi di Termeno (Tramin) of was also hit by another boulder, but wasn't majorly damaged. Luckily, no one was injured or killed by the landslide, but the tenants of the house, the Trebo family, were forced to evacuate, according to local news reports.
