Trying to decide on one of these two the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter and the Katadyn MINI Pocket Water Filter, I can read the obvious one pumps more water at a time, one has limited warranty. But its the weight and price of the two.

In you opinion is the mini as good as the other for one person? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I was originally going to get the mini, but have pretty much decided on getting the larger model. Though, price is an issue.

decisions decisions... a preppers work is never done.

Hannah: The obvious question is, "What are you expecting to do with this filter"? Is this going to be an occassional use, as in backpacking on the weekends, or is this supposed to be for the TEOTWAWKI or TSHTF? You will need to 'budget' for a replacement filter, too. :chg:

Just to have for bug out.

Been reading at the grandpappy place and its got alot of good info and they said this filter was good,
Its about $339.00 for it and the replacement which getting the replacement makes sense

Hannah

Scott what made you decide on the larger

How hard will it be to pump one of these things as I have limited mobility

Hannah,

I recommend you take a look at eBAy. I needed a similiar water filtration unit
and bought one for under $155 within the last 10 minutes (seller has 8 more.)

And there was more than 1 seller (at least a dozen.)

(First rule of prepping, stretch those prep dollar!)

The replacement filter are around $89...

EDIT ADD:
The site you listed had a $219 price for the same unit.

1988 I bought a Katadyn Pocket water filter (13K gals), with an extra filter element (13k gal). They live in the packsack in my 4x4 truck. (We use the
Berkfeld to filter water for drinking and cooking at home.)

You may wish to consider the Katadyn Combi (13k gal) which may be pumped by hand, or attched to kitchen faucet

BTW near the Berkfeld I have eight sturdy one gallon jugs of filtered water. The jugs are numbered. When I use nr one I refill it and then use nr two and so on.
If we have to leave the house suddenly I have eight gal filtered safe water to carry along.

Another place where redundancy is good. We have a Pocket Filter, a Combi, a Pur Hiker (extra filters for all). A couple of the old Timberline filters, a couple water bottle filters & a couple of straw filters.
Another we have that you might want to consider is the MSR MIOX purifier. They are easy to use and will kill just about everything including a lot of chemicals (weapons). It was developed for the military and are in wide use currently.
Check it out here: http://www.msrcorp.com/filters/miox.asp

FWIW... I have the "Hiker." It rides fine in my 3-Day bag. Quite a bit less expensive than the "Mini" and you don't really sacrifice THAT much space or weight, and you only lose .1 microns worth of filtration.

Update, the eBay seller called me regarding the water filter I purchased on line.

The Katadyn water filter will be drop shipped directly from the factory.
In this case, lowest bidder works quiet well. $177 and change delivered
(I have CA sales tax...added :kk1: )

Thanks for all the info and ideas, I did some research today and what is the difference between the filter and purifier, looks to me like after you filter the water you still have to purify it somehow, i.e. usng one of the pump things.

Filtering only gets out so much and then purifying is the 'kill shot;

I have a exstream personal water filter but wondered if that was enough.

The Exstream filter-bottles are really hard to beat as far a purification goes.

I also have a sweetwater purifier as well. Good unit.

I got my Katadyn pocket filter today from ccoutdoors for $170 and free shipping. My next order will include the combi filter and a couple exstream bottles and replacement cartridges. I wanted to get the "base camp" model at 1 gal/min., but decided it was a bit much; I like it though.

Well, I have to say I'm a bit surprised that none of you tried me. My TB2K prices easily beat all the Katadyn quotes in this thread.

I went with the regular size, can't be to safe when it comes to having water. I will run it through the Katadyn purifier and then through the one that takes out viruses (Exstream)

Also picked up something called JetBoil to cook in, its new and has gotten rave reviews.

Thank you all for your input and help
