Jill Biden says her husband ‘would have’ beaten Trump in 2024 election
Jill Biden says that had he stayed in the 2024 White House race, then-
President Biden would’ve defeated President Trump.
“I believe he would have beat
Donald Trump in that election,” the former first lady said of her husband during
a Tuesday interview on MS Now’s “Morning Joe.”
Biden
dropped out of the presidential race in July 2024 following a disastrous debate against Trump and amid concerns about his physical and mental acuity.
Trump became the first president in more than 120 years to lose the White House and then come back to win it again
after defeating then-Vice President Harris, who took over at the top of the ticket after Biden bowed out.
Following Biden’s debate performance, “Morning Joe” co-host
Willie Geist said, there were many Democrats who “thought in some ways they’d been duped.”
“That close advisers to President Biden, perhaps some members of the media even, had protected him enough and kept him out of maybe a rigorous event schedule enough that they could get him along through to Election Day, and they thought we just saw what it’s really like behind the scenes,” Geist continued.
“If we were hiding him behind the scenes, why did we ask the Trump team for the debate? I mean, we were the ones that proposed it. If that were true, why did we put him out there?” Biden responded.
“I don’t think he was protected,” Biden, promoting her new memoir, “View from the East Wing,” said.
Asked about the 83-year-old former president’s current health following
his diagnosis last year of an aggressive form of prostate cancer, Biden said, “Cancer is really tough. I would say he’s doing OK. He’s still making speeches, he’s still on Amtrak a couple times a month, keeping a schedule. But cancer takes its toll.”
“He gets tired a little more often, but I don’t know,” she said. “It’s been tough.”
“Considering what the president’s health is now, had he continued his re-election bid, had he been elected again, would he have been able to serve as president? Would he have had to resign?” asked “Morning Joe’s” Jonathan Lemire.
“I don’t know,” Biden said.
“I don’t know the answer to that.”
