Russian diplomats worldwide are sounding the alarm that the Islamic
Movement of Uzbekistan fighters are infiltrating back into Central Asia from
Afghanistan for another assault on the strategic Ferghana Valley. Local
sources confirm reports of hundreds of fighters from bases in the northern
Afghan towns of Mazar-e-Sharif and Kunduz assembling in the Tavildera Valley
in Tajikistan, and training for this year's campaign. What is different this
year is the forces of IMU leader Juma Namangani includes large contingents
of Uighur Muslims from China, seduced by Namangani's promise of a united
Central Asian Islamic Republic that would stretch from the Caspian Sea
through the Old Silk Route and deep into China. Cynics suggest that the
Russians should know, having in the past given the IMU considerable help
with logistics, as a way to frighten the Uzbeks and other formerly Soviet
republics of Central Asia back under the wing of Mother Russia.
