It may be time to upgrade from cloth masks to hi-tech ones, experts say
Better masks will better block transmission of the virus, especially omicron, some say.

In the early days of the pandemic, many a sweet soul spent socially distanced time churning out cloth masks to help defend family and friends from a deadly new virus that nobody quite understood as it began spreading around the globe.
Though ubiquitous for a time, they are no longer the best available option.

Dr. Nirav Shah, head of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said during his weekly briefing Wednesday that it “may be time to retire” what he called “the older approach of a cloth-based face covering.”
There are better options now that offer both the wearer and others more protection against a disease that has killed 1,510 Mainers since its detection in the state in March 2020.

“I’m increasingly coming around to the view that we need to be upgrading our masks,” Shah said.
He suggested that “the bare minimum ought to be a surgical mask,” one of those pale blue and white masks that are fairly widespread already.
Shah said he will also be talking with experts on his staff “about upgrading from there” as well to N95 masks that would provide even better defense against the potentially deadly virus that is spreading quickly these days.
It’s worth noting that cloth masks, still common, do offer some defense against COVID-19.
Joseph Allen, an associate professor at Harvard’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health, said Wednesday that if they are 50% effective, that cuts the risk in half for somebody when one is worn.

In a room where everyone is wearing a cloth mask, the efficiency rating of each of the masks would rise to 75% because someone present who has COVID-19 could not pass it on without the virus passing through their mask and another’s.At a moment when personal protective measures were in short supply even for hospitals, experts had no trouble urging everybody to wear a mask, sometimes mandating them as well.
But there is a growing chorus of experts who say the nation should be switching to better masks that will do a better job blocking transmission of the virus, especially the tricky omicron variant.
Allen wrote recently that surgical masks have a 70% filtration rate. If two people are each wearing one, he said, their “combined protection is 91% because the virus must pass through masks twice.”
That’s not bad.
But “much, much better masks exist,” expert Aaron Collins wrote in The Guardian this week.

“These are sometimes called high-filtration masks, or by the technical name of a filtering facepiece respirator,” he said.
“Such high-performance masks provide significant protection to the wearer at levels that are between five and 10 times that of a cloth mask, while also providing significant protection to others,” Collins said.
The California Department of Public Health lists N95, KN95 and KF94 masks as the best options, with the proviso that users should not wear an additional face coverings over or under the respirator since doing so can interfere with the seal to the face.
Allen said that by wearing an N95 mask — and getting vaccinated and boosted — people can “live a low-risk life regardless of what others around them are doing.”

In another thread here yesterday, there was a picture of the faces of a bunch of people (probably healthcare workers) after wearing N95 masks for a shift. They weren’t pretty. Granted, healthcare workers are fit-tested so their masks don’t have any gaps. The general public won’t be, which means the masks will do no good.

Imagine a classroom of first graders wearing N95s. No, it’s not happening.

There was never ever a time to wear cloth or paper masks, especially when they do not conform to the facial curves and give an tight air seal, covering both nose and mouth. Anyone that's ever wore a specialty mask, be it a military gas mask to a painters mask is aware of this.

It's been a game the sheep bought into from the start, and no one will be changing their mindless minds anytime soon. It's like Rush used to say, they are stupid and proud of it.

People if you can smell fragrances through your mask, it is not going to stop any virus. N 95s have to be professionally fitted or they’re worthless. How many people know that?

We had them in the hospital fitted by the Director of nursing when we went into rooms that had negative air pressure because of the severity of the pts illness.

We’re having outbreaks now in the nursing home and staff must be masked along with visitors. What does this tell you?

These kinds of masks are ridiculous. They do not work to prevent viral spread. Free people should not wear them (except to appease their spouse when going out to dinner ).

If one is going to upgrade, one needs to go to a PAPR device. Masks are essentially worthless over the long haul.

my son that works in an acute care facility is required to wear an N95 at all times inside the hospital. He is developing facial wounds due to the things. He now uses triple antibiotic, especially on his nose, to prevent it getting worse. He also must wear goggle and gloves.

Guess I'm the bad guy.... when required, I wore an N95 with exhalation valve. Because I had many... I use them a lot during spring & summer to fall ragweed season, when working in the garden, mowing, etc. I could not wear one without that valve, stays much cooler. Am I infecting anyone should I wear one? Heck, I don't go out if I'm sick so I ain't going to infect anyone. It's those idiots in the blue masks that worry me.

And I learned how to fit a mask while working remedial work in the chemical plants... not to mention those hella hot US Army gas masks.

Take any mask the government wants you to wear and BURN THEM, THEY ARE USELESS, Covid does not exist any where.
The government wants to turn all of of Earth into human robots!

IF you decide to go to a type 95 mask, I would caution you not to buy the KN type masks that are made in China. I recently decided to buy some additional type 95's and during my research, the multiple reviews that I read were that 70% of the KN types tested did not meet US Type 95 standards and some were no better then cloth masks i.e. fakes!! We typically wear triple ply, non-woven material cloth or surgical masks WHEN we do go out.

In the past two years, we have only personally known two people who contracted COVID with the husband being hospitialized for 3 months in serious condition. In the past month, my SIL family, with 7 living in the house, have 4 people positive, 2 more sick and need to be tested, with a 85 year out senior in the house. They contracted it from the teenage girl. Her boyfriend's entire family tested positive. Obviously, Cupids arrows are surfaced contaminated with COVID and not de-contaminated before use.

I went back and re-read all the monographs on the 1918 Spanish Flu to better understand their reactions and what they went through. I grew up in Southern Ohio in a rural farming area with a 30K town. People always talked about the '37 Ohio river flood, WW2 and other disaster events but I do not remember even hearing stories about the 1918 flu.

Not having multiple, greedy Pharma companies to trot out official, government authorized "Snake Oil elixars"( for the sake of the children), the only way they finally beat back the flu was strict sanitation protocols, i.e. wearing PPE such masks, gloves, eye protection, etc. , washing (sanitizing) face, hands, clothes, bed sheets, furniture, etc. frequently and before handing community items such as coffeepots, refrigerators, faucets, toilets, etc. i.e. taking personal responsibility for their care and safety

Now, I think people are just getting fed up mentally/physically/spirtually and just getting lax on the sanitation habits. Before retiring,I worked in semiconductor cleanroom facilities. Understanding the need for extremely strict protocols for particles that you cannot see with the naked eye, adherring to new protocols comes easier for me. They are very much harder on my wife likes to socialize and shop for hours on end.

With the CDC coming out saying that cloth masks are useless and Omicron seeming on the rise in the Bay Area, I decided it was time to hedge my bets again. I "invested" in some higher quality N95 masks, in case things now and in the future go south. Having been a morally bankrupted boy scout, I like to buy when prices are low so I purchased

Kimberly-Clark PROFESSIONAL N95 Pouch Respirator (53358), NIOSH-Approved, Made in U.S.A., Regular Size, 50 Respirators/Bag, White
They were high rated, US made and even these have went up in price from $42 to $57 in the last 10 days on Amazon. Things seem to trending downward again so Good Luck to everyone.

As one doctor put it "an N95 allows in 5% of the dirt and 100% of the virus." This article just prolongs the narrative of the DS.
