Many moons ago I lived in Arlington during the era when TV stations signed off around midnight or slightly later. And each station had its special sign off screen shown at the very end, before the screen turned to snow. Anyway back then one of the stations used an American flag as their signoff screen. Instead of the flag being red white and blue, the red and blue were replaced with green. It's an oddity I'll never forget. I viewed it as a political message no different than today's woke commercials.
"TV stations signed off around midnight"

You're old, too.

I think it's the opposite. Few, if any commercials even have white people in them. I feel like I'm the minority.
we don’t watch a great deal of tee vee here but it IS winter and we’re inside more so it tends to be on more often that it is at other times of the year. I am NOT noticing any improvement - if anything it seems to be MORE of the same social engineering crap.

as has been said up thread - its likely to “ebb and flow” you can take to the bank that it WON’T be stopped or normalized in the future.

I have not noticed this trend, but I'll pay attention to see if I spot something. Usually it's just the opposite.

In fact, just the other day, I was thinking how so many commercials use a demographic mix that I actually don't see very often in similar situations in the real world. I assume if such things are common, it's more likely to be seen in LA or NYC, which these people think are the real world anyway.

1984 is not fiction.
We don't watch much main stream boob-tube. Mostly we stream through roku and watch YouTube or Netflix and Prime.
We did watch Macy's Thanksgiving parade.
The parade included a queer band.
Commercials included:
Lesbians
Queer guys
Pushing the vaccine shot/now pills for the virus.
Mixed race couples

Mixed race couples don't bother me, but it's not the norm like they try to make it.
I absolutely can not stand to see the same sex kissing. It gives me the major creeps.

This
Makes me wanna hurl
Did get my revenge on a lesbo dyke on mothers day
Wal greens getting cards for wife and daughters
Now two obvious lesbos really ranting about the abortion issue after the supreme leak
I’m just ignoring but this one was louder than polite society could tolerate and very profane
So
I asked her if she was getting a card for her mother and she said yes
I then said
Bet your mother really regrets not having you aborted
Coulda heard a pin drop
I expected a verbal take down
But nothing

She started crying and walked away
Wife told me I was cruel
Maybe
Maybe.
But I’m tired of biting my tounge

That “snow” you speak of, at the end of tv programming for the day - I used to say it was bug fights. That’s what it looked like to me, not snow. :)
That snow was accompanied by a static type sound. My wife, who is actually quite smart, is teased a lot. I keep reminding her (in humor) that is what goes on in her mind, is snow and static just like a TV turned to a blank channel - there's nothing going on at all.

It hasn't changed much over here, at least not the UK adverts which are most of what I see when I watch regular TV (which isn't that often, usually Sky News when a story is breaking). That said, I am very socially liberal and loved the first same-sex Ikea commercials which just tended to be basically the same commercials as the straight version - young couples starting up housekeeping, it was inclusive without sending a MESSAGE with a HAMMER to your head.

But I'm getting really tired (as are many Brits from all reports) of endless commercials where every family is bi-racial, despite the fact that only a small percentage of British families are. Now to be fair, the Brits (or the entire UK for that matter) have never had some of the DEEP issues the US has with this. When we first moved here you would see occasionally on both UK and Irish TV, commercials which occasionally had a bi-racial couple as part of the message. I remember one that was a montage of couples of all ages from tiny children to the very elderly and one couple dancing in their living room was bi-racial. I remember telling friends here at the time (the late 1990s) you would almost never see a commercial like that in the United States (man black, woman white) because that was true. And even advertising majors I went to school with said the same thing, it was simply a place advertisers did not go, ever.

Then suddenly they did, and now things have gone so far the other direction that a military recruiting ad in the UK had to be redone when it was realized (finally by someone) as it was going to print, that the poster photo had absolutely no white or traditionally British looking people on it all! They had to stop the presses and re-do the whole thing and add a pretty English Rose and British Beefeater-looking (white) soldiers to the poster.

There was nothing wrong with also having everyone else on that poster, these days they are all Brits (or Welsh, Scots, or Northern Irish) but the point was the poster effectively erased people from the Mother Culture!

And trust me, not every family in the UK (or Ireland) has a black husband (or boyfriend) and a white wife, they exist, probably more frequently than in the US as do White/Asian (Hindu or Muslim) and a lot of other combinations. But having it so way overdone gets on my nerves too, partly because it is such an in-you-face-MESSAGE.

Most of the same-sex couples I've seen in advertising here were pretty low-key like the Ikea Commercial but then I don't watch enough commercial TV to be certain of that.

Anyway, I don't think people like messages with their commercial messages, at least not when it is over the top and over done.

Maybe you woke her up. That's never a bad thing.

Was the green the same both stripes? Thinking it might be related to the color bars somehow. TV engineer in a past life.

I’ll bet she loved that. Not!

that the advertising [limited that I have seen] seems to be returning to more conservative values? Same race families, correct sex families? Multi-generational that are all the same? I just started noticing it not long ago, and since I mentioned it to my husband, he indicated he has noticed it as well.

Just us, or are you starting to notice shift to more traditional norms in advertising?
Sorry Donna - try not to watch enough to notice but, it would be nice of your observations proved out . . . . .

Today, YouTube thought I might enjoy an Apple commercial featuring a Latino woman and a Black dude dancing around in some surrealistic trance making random street objects turn into exploding showers of snow.

And it was in Spanish, not one word of English.

That really annoys me.

Noticed a HallMarkish Christmas show DH was watching. Yes, characters were hooked up with same race. The main characters were black and well educated. I've no problem with the casting or characters. The plot ran pretty much to their usual formula.
