WAR Iran/ US/mideast war thread - 2/28/26 Open Hostilities (Thread for Off Topic discussion started, see post #13,751, page 344)

Tousi has just announced that Iran has sworn to now attack any and all Arab nations that have in any way assisted the U.S. and Israel in this war. As a small victory for Iran, waiting for conformation, they brought down a U.S. drone.

EDIT TO ADD: The US claim is that fast-boats were again given attention. Possibly as many as 100 don’t float anymore.

'We May Take Over Kharg Island': Trump Floats US Seizure of Key Iranian Oil Hub

President Trump threatened to "take over Kharg Island" as tensions with Iran reignite — saying there was "not a thing" Tehran can do to stop it. Trump made the threat to seize the export hub for about 90% of Iran's oil while outlining a range of possible actions as he foreshadowed a second night of US attacks on Iran.

Welcome and summary

Hello and welcome to the Guardian’s coverage of the continuing crisis in the Middle East.
Iran was pummelled with a volley of missiles for a second consecutive night, with the US military claiming to have struck 170 Iranian targets in the last 48 hours.
US Central Command (Centcom) said the intense bombing aimed to “further degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the strait of Hormuz”.

Iranian state media reported explosions in several cities, most of them concentrated in the south of the country, as its army responded with retaliatory strikes on US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

The regional crossfire sparked by a battle to control movement in the narrow and strategic shipping channel threatens to unravel an interim truce between the US and Iran.

Both sides have vowed to escalate retaliations should provocations continue, with president Donald Trump warning that worse could come, while Iran has threatened to expand its attacks against US bases in the region.

During the Nato summit in Turkey, Trump said he considers the memorandum of understanding with Iran to be “over”, adding: “I don’t want to deal with them.”

Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, vowed that the strait of Hormuz would remain under Iranian management. “The strait of Hormuz will be reopened only under Iranian arrangements, not through US threats,” he wrote on X.

The fresh strikes came as Iranians prepare to bury their late supreme leader Ali Khamenei in his home town of Mashhad in north-east Iran. The burial follows a multi-day funeral ceremony that attracted millions of mourners across various cities in both Iran and Iraq.

Iranian army claims attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar

Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait have come under renewed attack this morning as Iran continues its retaliatory strikes on US bases in the region.

Bahrain – home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet – Kuwait and Qatar all sounded sirens as air defence systems shot down incoming Iranian drones and missiles. There were no immediate reports of any damage.

In a statement carried by Iran’s official Irna news agency, the Iranian army said it targeted a US Patriot missile system in Kuwait as well as an early warning satellite antenna site in Qatar and fuel tanks belonging to the US military in Bahrain.

“Of the injured, 47 remain hospitalised, while the others have been discharged after receiving medical treatment.”

Iran has no interest in dragging Israel into the conflict, which is why it has held off on attacks, two Israeli officials tell the Jerusalem Post.

Two things could push Israel to strike Iran: an Iranian attack, or a U.S. request to join the operation. Neither has happened.

Asian stocks climb and oil prices slip as traders monitor Iran war developments

Story by Chan Ho-him

HONG KONG (AP) — Asian stocks mostly advanced Friday, helped by buying of technology-related shares, while oil prices slipped as traders watched for developments in the Iran war.

U.S. futures were mixed.

Tensions between Iran and the U.S. escalated this week after President Donald Trump said the Iran war ceasefire agreement was “over” and as the United States and Iran exchanged attacks.

South Korea’s Kospi gained 2.5% to 7,475.94, recovering some of its losses from earlier in the week. Shares in memory chipmaker SK Hynix, whose debut on the Nasdaq in New York is set for Friday, fell 0.3% in Seoul.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.2% to 68,557.73. SoftBank Group, a key investor in OpenAI, jumped 10.7%, while chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron added 2.7%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng traded 0.5% higher at 24,156.29 and the Shanghai Composite index erased earlier losses to fall 1% to 3,996.16.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.5% to 8,806.00.

India’s Sensex added 1%.

Oil prices yo-yoed again on Friday as global oil supplies remained under pressure due to a limited numbers of vessels able to cross the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for energy transport.

Brent crude, the international standard, fell 0.8% to $75.66 per barrel. It was trading near $72 a barrel before the war began in late February.

Benchmark U.S. crude shed 0.9% to $71.47 a barrel.

On Thursday, Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index rose 0.8% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 1.3% to 26,206.89.

Semiconductors stocks led gains. Micron Technology jumped 4.5% after the memory chipmaker said it would increase its U.S. investments, citing “surging demand for memory in the AI era.”

Shares of AMD, or Advanced Micro Devices, surged 5.7%. Marvell Technology rose 5%, while ON Semiconductor added 4.4%.

In other dealings early Friday, the U.S. dollar fell to 161.70 Japanese yen from 162.37 yen. The euro was trading at $1.1439, up from $1.1430.

The yen gained against the dollar after Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama told a parliamentary committee that the government plans to encourage big pension funds to invest more in domestic, yen-denominated assets.

Donald Trump Officials Dub Iran Strikes ‘Operation B***h Slap’ as War Fears Grow

President Donald Trump's officials have reportedly and informally dubbed the escalating military strikes on Iran "Operation B***h Slap." The colloquial label captures the Trump administration's view that the bombing campaign will be hard and punishing yet short-lived unless Tehran escalates further.

Donald Trump's administration has a nickname for Iran strike

While the broader Iran war carries the formal designation "Operation Epic Fury," several White House and Pentagon insiders reportedly stressed that Operation B***h Slap holds no official status (via New York Post).

President Donald Trump has left no doubt about his hard-line stance. He branded Iran's leaders "sick," "loco," and "scum" this week and declared an earlier cease-fire dead. He also threatened to seize Kharg Island, impose a new blockade, and cripple Iranian infrastructure. A former White House official described Trump's solitary approach: "Trump is not coordinating with anyone… he's going with his gut."

Moreover, after Iran struck three commercial vessels along an Omani shipping route preferred by the US, the American military expanded its target list. Warplanes destroyed a rail bridge near the Turkmenistan border, severing a vital supply corridor linking Iran to China and Russia, according to Iran's Fars News Agency. Tehran responded by firing missiles and drones at US bases in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Jordan, all of which reported successful interceptions.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Donald Trump hinted at using overwhelming force in the war with Iran. "Every time they hit us, we're going to hit them 20," he said. He claimed Iran's military capacity has been devastated: "We've already won militarily. They have very little left."

Despite the bombardment, Trump insisted Tehran wants negotiations. "They want to make a deal so badly," he said, though he questioned whether any agreement would be honoured. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi pushed back against the president's incendiary language, telling state media: "Iranians… do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action."

ILREDALERT @ILREDALERT A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Qatari negotiators are meeting with Iranian officials in coordination with the United States to help de-escalate tensions and lay the groundwork for broader negotiations.

OKAY! I admit this is a comment and as such may be deleted. FWIW, Mrs. late's nephew has arrived state-side from Iran. He was here for a short time and now they are off to visit with family down in Orlando. I had a brief chance to speak with him about the war, how the average Iranian is taking it, and how he got out. Understand this guy was given shelter by Mrs. late and I during the Iran/Iraq war. He lived and worked here for many years and actually did become an American citizen. He returned to Iran for two reasons. First of all, everything is cheaper there. Secondly, after his mother had the second knee replaced, she doesn't get around too well anymore. A dutiful son taking care of Mom in her old age. Who can complain with that?

Despite what people may think, he flew out of Tehran to Turkey, then to Europe, then NYC. The only problems he encountered were what you would expect for someone coming from a hostile nation to the U.S. during a time of war. Immigration had a lot of questions, Being a citizen with a clean record helped a lot, but he and his wife did miss their connecting flight and had to take another one several hours later.

For the record, the Iranian people are still pi**ed at Trump for not delivering weapons to them a long time ago. It makes them distrustful of him. When the war started, just as any of us would do, the people stayed off the streets and out of the line of fire. However, within a couple of weeks, they realized the bombing was happening at mainly military sites and so they have once again gone back out and just continued living their lives. While staying away from military sites. Life goes on ya know.

However, for the most part because of almost 50 years of oppression, they do not believe in any way shape or form, that once the shooting stops the IRGC and mullahs will be gone. They believe once this is over, we will have removed the outer layers of the onion, but the regime itself will remain in power and be really, really pi**ed that the people didn't do more to support them. Once the American and Israeli threat is gone, everything returns to the way it was before. Kinda like what The Who sang years ago,

"Meet the new boss,
Same as the old boss."

ILREDALERT @ILREDALERT Israel has shared intelligence with the United States about a new alleged Iranian plot to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue “talks.”

We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Satellite imagery reviewed by CNN suggests Iran may be attempting to rebuild parts of its nuclear and missile infrastructure during the fragile ceasefire with the United States and Israel.

The images, analyzed with the Institute for Science and International Security, show repair work at the Parchin nuclear site, including efforts to address damage caused by bunker-busting bombs during the recent conflict. Additional activity was observed at the suspected Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site and several missile facilities.
