Land Interesting blog from someone living off-grid in Alaska

All of the talk on TB2K recently about being sick of society and looking for a place to run away to made me wonder what people who actually already live this lifestyle are doing and wishing for. Looking for a recipe I ran across the following blog:

There have been no posts since 2012 so I don't know if it was abandoned or just what but the two-years worth of posts that are there have lots of interesting information in them. Just remember men, if something happens to you that your women and children will have to fend for themselves in that lifestyle.

Her last post is sobering if you are thinking of taking a family out into the boonies with you:

It's been a long time since I updated my blog. Chuck and I had been very busy building our new log cabin that we hoped to be in by next summer, and we'd been expanding our garden. Then, the unthinkable happened. Chuck was killed in a tragic accident. The boys and I are back out at our homestead trying to rebuild our lives. I don't know how we're going to make it alone out here, but with the help and prayers of friends, I'm sure we will. It's going to be rough going, and I sure have a lot to learn. Please keep our family in your prayers.

It hasn't been deliberately abandoned. Her husband died and she's still figuring out what she's going to do and if she can keep doing it. I still follow her and am waiting for her return. But if anyone has a right to say that "real" life interfered - it's her.

Thanks kyrsyan. I figured it was something like life and finances forcing changes in her life. That points even more to a caution people should have about assuming that living in the boonies would be paradise.

I read her posts with interest. I had wondered how she had kept up a blog off-grid and then found out at first she used up a lot of fuel running the generator to do it but then they got an invertor which not only helped save fuel but was also quieter.

I see many that cannot take charge of things like my wife that depends on me and just in the last year has woken up to the fact she had better get her ass in gear and learn how to do things and how to do it right rather than think it's not her problem and get someone like me to take care of it or worse call someone and pay them to do it for her because I was not getting to it fast enough for her and has come to the conclusion after taking a look at what it would cost and that she would go broke in no time.
I have spent most of my early life learning how to do and or fix things for my self, you can learn allot by watching someone and don't be afraid to ask a few questions along the way as many are willing with pride to show and explain what they know how to do and may even ask you do some hands on while they are at it.

I found her blog a couple of years ago. Much of what she wrote helped me reevaluate and re-plan my life expectations. I think of her situation often and check back occasionally to see if she has started posting again. I enjoyed reading her blog, you could see the love she had for the life her and her husband chose and how hard they both worked and sacrificed to keep that lifestyle. It is also a good lesson in how devastating it can be to loose a supporting member and how important it is to develop a larger support group.

She has some short posts (along the right side of the blog) from as recent as May this year. She's still at it and sounds like she's still positive about the lifestyle.

I was shocked to read that Chuck had died. I was on their Frontier Freedom forum for several years, until I didn't have a computer anymore for a while. Complicating matters, something I don't know if she mentioned on her blog posts, at least one of their boys is autistic (IIRC, all three boys were adopted). That's a hard place to live for a single mom.

I just did a Google search on her and found some recent comment postings on some other blogs I follow. She's still in Alaska. But that's about all you can tell from the comments. If I'm reading the wording of them correctly, she's also still single although I know at one point she was actively looking for a new husband. She's an amazing woman to be able to keep going on her own with her son.
