Indonesia declares “extraordinary” situation over bird flu

JAKARTA - Indonesia on Monday declared the country is facing an “extraordinary” health situation after bird flu left a fourth person dead, three children with suspected infections and the Jakarta zoo shut down.
Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said she declared the ”extraordinary incident” because the number of cases has increased.
The classification, which has been applied previously for outbreaks of dengue fever, means authorities will devote special attention to the problem.
Supari, quoted by the state Antara news agency, said that by invoking the “extraordinary incident” status there would be increased effort in handling bird flu.
“We hope we would be more aggressive in the face of the bird flu case and the budget for its handling would be more focused,” the minister added.
The government has already allocated 158 billion rupiah (15.6 million dollars) to battle bird flu but Supari said more funds would be needed.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday it was trying to find out what happened at the zoo and could not yet comment.
tsk, tsk...
