India ‘Rushes Troops’ to Chinese Border After Beijing Increases Presence
Last week, lawmakers adopted China's first-ever dedicated anti-terrorism law. The new law's most interesting provision, as far as foreign observers are concerned, is an article authorizing the Chinese military to take part in counter-terrorism missions abroad. Will China now join the Syrian, Russian and Iranian-led anti-terror campaign in Syria?

India “rushed troops” to its border with China in the Ladakh Valley hours after Beijing boasted that it had “bolstered” its military presence along the border on Monday, the Economic Times of India reported.

On Monday, Chinese state media reported that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had increased its presence on the border it shares with India in the Galwan Valley. Hours later, the Times reported that India had responded to what it viewed as China’s “aggressive deployment,” rushing in “additional troops” and constructing “defensive positions” along the Galwan River in Ladakh.

According to China’s report, published by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) newspaper Global Times, PLA border troops strengthened China’s “on-the-spot response” in the valley. The report warned that “if India escalates the friction, the Indian military force could pay a heavy price.”

According to the Times, Indian military sources say “several hundred soldiers from each side” have been deployed to the area. The Indian sources cited reports claiming that the Chinese have set up “over 80 tents” to construct “temporary defensive positions,” adding that “fast response reinforcements” have also been sent to the Galwan River.

The Galwan River flows from the disputed Aksai Chin region, which China claims to administer as part of its Xinjiang and Tibet autonomous regions. India also claims the Aksai Chin region as part of its Ladakh Valley territory; Ladakh is part of the larger region of Kashmir, also claimed by both sides. India and China have faced off along this border since 1962 when the two states fought a war over the disputed territory near the Himalayan mountain range.

China claimed to have increased its military presence on Monday in response to India’s “recent, illegal construction of defense facilities across the border into Chinese territory in the Galwan Valley region.” Indian military sources explained to the Times that India has not been building illegal defensive military fortifications. Rather, it has been constructing a road “to carry out patrols in the area” and for use by the local population.

According to the report, the PLA’s attempt to halt India’s construction of the road has led to the current tension along the border. The military sources add that “an extensive road network has already been established by China on the other side of the border.”

This is the latest development in an ongoing standoff along the boundary between the two nations in the Ladakh region. On May 12, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed fighter jets to carry out regular patrols of the Ladakh area after Chinese helicopters flew aggressively close to Indian airspace along the border. This followed shortly after a skirmish on the ground between 150 Indian and Chinese troops on May 9.

If would be nice if someone other then us gave china a slap. Especially if china were to have started the conflict

tbd

With the domestic political situations in both countries, if anything starts up the pressure will be not to de-escalate but to get some kind of a "win". With the nukes involved and the flight times involved things could escalate real fast.

I think China is trying to box India in and force it to choose between being strategically aligned with the US or with China. If they choose to side with us they are going to find Chinese pressure on all of their borders due to Chinese influence in the surrounding countries (Pakistan, Malaysia, etc).

Does anybody doubt that war with China within the next couple of years is inevitable? China's global belligerence is increasing at a rapid pace - from verbal threats to hostilities in the South China Sea, to these border conflicts, and to the island invasion training they are currently conducting (that leave no room for doubt that they're practicing how to invade & take Taiwan).

It's inevitable... that or surrender.
This pandemic magically started in China and somehow had had the most impact on the U.S. while China allegedly handled it neatly. Isn't that amazing?
Now... another outbreak has been announced in China...supposedly in the north... and will probably be here by 4 July if not before. Seems that it is supposedly different from the one with which we are presently dealing. Isn't that amazing?

If we were to unilaterally nuke them back into the stone age today we would probably lose a few cities but it would stop the flow of pandemics which always seem to originate in China.

OTOH it would not do a damned thing to ameliorate the impact of the pandemic already here and the one soon to arrive.

Someone...somewhere... is having those same thoughts.

I made a mistake earlier when discussing countries that border India -- Malaysia isn't on of them. They consist of:
  1. Pakistan
  2. China
  3. Nepal
  4. Myanmar
  5. Bangladesh
  6. Bhutan
  7. Sri Lanka
  8. Afghanistan
China's influence in each of those countries is strong, so my premise stands. They're trying to box India into their sphere of influence and away from ours.

WHO map shows parts of Ladakh as Chinese territory

WHO map shows parts of Ladakh as Chinese territory

Agencies
New Delhi: The World Health Organisation (WHO), which is facing accusation of delaying declaring coronavirus a pandemic allegedly at Beijing’s behest, seems to have floundered on the depiction of China’s map on its website.

Parts of Ladakh (Aksai-Chin) in the China section of the WHO website has been shown as part of Chinese territory with a dotted line and colour code. Also, Jammu & Kashmir and the rest of India are depicted in different colours. A part of J&K — Pakistan occupied Kashmir — is marked with a dotted line, suggesting it as a “disputed territory”.

Many UN maps show parts of Kashmir as “disputed”, but this is probably the first time J&K and Ladakh are shown in different colours than the rest of India in the map of a UN body. ET has learnt that India has formally raised the matter with concerned UN authorities and awaiting response.

“The map of India depicted by WHO differs from the standard depiction even of the United Nations itself, by not showing parts of J&K which are under actual control of India as a part of our country,” Gautam Bambawale, India’s former envoy to China, Pakistan and Bhutan, told ET. “WHO’s depiction of J&K with a different colour wash from that of India is strange, incorrect and surprising.”

Pakistan had ceded part of PoK to China in the 1960s. China occupies around 37,000 sq km in Ladakh, bordering its Xinjiang province.

Earlier this month China included parts of Arunachal Pradesh within its international boundaries, according to an updated version issued by Sky Map, which is China's authority on digital maps.

The map of China, until now, was based on the 1989 edition of the Sky Map of its national borders, though Beijing has since solved its border issues with Russia and Central Asian countries.

However, as per a DW (German media) report in Chinese language, some users noticed that Sky Map had now updated the geographic information at the "county" level. "The county boundaries of some counties clearly transcend the red colour-marked 1989 edition of the national border, especially in Tibet area bordering Bhutan and India," the report said.

China has claimed its sovereignty over Tibet "counties bordering India and Bhutan from east to west”, it said. China calls Arunachal Pradesh as part of ‘South Tibet’.

I'm getting a bad feeling about this one...Like the PRC and Pakistan "coordinating" between the LAC and the LOC and India going up the escalation ladder exponentially.

Actually, India and China going to war is not totally a bad thing, if China picks a fight with India, Taiwan, the US and Japan, that is a multi front war, with a lot of internal division going on, especially in the Muslim areas, that could be exploited. Me thinks China needs good PR cause things ain’t so hot In Beijing!

Both India and the PRC are "motivated" to not have repeats of 1962 or 1979. That's not a good situation to say the least.
