Illinois Becomes The First State To Pass "The Purge" Law

Fri, September 16, 2022 at 8:15 AM

Illinois is passing a law that some would say will make history. Illinois is looking to be the first state in the United States to abolish cash bail. And the consequences of passing such a law have many believing the state could mirror the horror movie “The Purge”. In the film, citizens were given 24 hours to commit all the crimes they wanted.

On January 1st of 2023 the ‘SAFE-T’ Act will commence in the state of Illinois. This act will get rid of the cash bail system in its entirety. The name SAFE-T is an acronym for ‘Safety, Accountability, Fairness, and Equity-Today’. Those that instated the act believe it will reduce arrests and limit those put away based on the crime.

Non-Detainable Offenses

There are 12 non-detainable offenses where the new law would end cash bail. The law includes second-degree murder, arson, drug-induced homicide, robbery, kidnapping, aggravated battery, burglary, intimidation, aggravated driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, drug offenses, and threatening a public official.

“I’m very concerned about an increase in violent crime. But again I do want to stress there is still time to fix it. And the state’s attorneys are working very hard as we have been for the last year and a half to fix this law. It is very fixable, where we can still eliminate cash bail but make sure the right people are in custody and everybody else who’s not a danger gets out,” said state’s attorney Robert Berlin.

The Safe-T Act would allow criminals a pre-trial release for the crimes listed above. And if prosecutors fail to show “clear and convincing evidence” that the alleged could be a threat to a specific individual. Unfortunately, the consequences of the Safe-T Act make an impact on how fast arrested criminals must be dealt with. Because prosecutors would only have 48 hours to decide whether the alleged criminal should be released. Investigators believe that 48 hours isn’t enough time to collect valuable evidence from surveillance cameras, laboratory work, and forensic research.

Reason For SAFE-T Act

As controversial as this law could be, let’s look at how this came about. For many years in the United States, many have called to abolish the cash bail system. Three out of five people that are in jail have not been convicted of any crimes. That’s about half a million people wasting away in jail cells before there’s even a trial because of the lack of actually investigating and research.

The Center For American Progress believes the cash bail system in most jurisdictions across the US are “criminalizing poverty.” Most in detention can’t afford the bail and spend weeks to even months, awaiting trial. This system mostly affects communities of color who already have the odds stacked against them across the country.

Hence, “studies show that pretrial detention can actually increase a person’s likelihood of rearrest upon release, perpetuating an endless cycle of arrest and incarceration,” stated the institute.

They can't even arrest them for not showing up for court after they don't have to go to jail when caught after the crime. They have to fail to appear twice before they get a warrant for failure to appear.

I was wondering about people tracking down and getting after the criminals let out on the streets.
Reminds me of a steely Dan song (Do it Again) from their first album.

SAFE-T Act ‘Purge’ law update – suburban Chicago state attorney files lawsuit to declare it ‘unconstitutional’

AN ILLINOIS county prosecutor filed legal action Friday to stop the roll out of what's being called "The Purge law" and argued it's unconstitutional, The U.S. Sun reveal.

James R. Rowe, Kankakee County state attorney, said in an emailed statement that politicians cannot "amend the Illinois Constitution without a referendum or Constitutional Convention."

"This lawsuit should not be necessary," he said.

"Regardless of whether you agree with or reject the many reforms of the Safe-T Act, or even how you may interpret them, one thing is for certain: you cannot amend the Illinois Constitution without a referendum."

He said the current bail system was created after a referendum vote in 1982.

“The Safe-T Act has effectively amended this section of the Illinois Constitution without a referendum vote of the people," Rowe said.

"The Legislature does not have that power. This lawsuit and the Illinois Constitution beg our legislators to do what is right and follow the process: give the people their right to vote."

The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief to stop the roll out of the bail reform provision, which is set to go into effect January 1, 2023.

The legal action, which was obtained by The U.S. Sun, was filed late Friday afternoon and named Illinois State Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Gov. Jay Robert Pritzker as the defendants.

Raoul and Pritzker couldn't be reached for comment Friday afternoon.

"It gives this Office no joy to file this lawsuit and I do so with some trepidation, well aware of how it may be responded to by those in powerful positions," Rowe said.

"Just know that we welcome criminal justice reform done properly at the will of the people, and we pray that can still be accomplished."

BACKGROUND OF THE SAFE-T ACT

The SAFE-T Act (Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today) is statewide, 800-page criminal justice reform legislation that was signed into law in February 2021.

Some have already gone into effect, while others - most notably ending cash bail - will be rolled up in the coming years.

There are several provisions of the legislation that recently Riverside, Illinois Police Chief Tom Wietzel said are positive changes, but, "We told them this (ending cash bail) was not a good idea."

Not familiar with Illinois gun law, CCW & stand your ground, self defense etc but I'm thinking there's could be a rash of gunfire just over the horizon.

Too bad; I've always heard it was state worth visiting but not so sure now . . .

This is coming to a state and county near you.

The law is already unwilling and/or unable to maintain order. Most cretins have no assets to lose thus no fear of the consequences of victimizing honest people.

Hopefully this new approach red pills enough normies to allow the cretins to get rehabilitated the old fashioned way.

Right wing death squads exist in failed states for a very good reason!

Look for the law to be repealed after a couple of the non-preferred race get let off after eliminating members of the politically preferred race during criminal encounters. It's bound to happen.

In the meantime, this Gangbangers' Second Chance law is going to let thugs who only wound their targets a free shot at completing their hit or to eliminate witnesses to their shootings.
