Icelandic sheep

Way back when, I was a Navy wife stationed in Keflaviic Iceland. The long haired sheep ran in open range all over the country. Made great yarn for sweaters - very very warm and water resistant. Once saw a guy hand sheer some of them. They used to make hot dogs out of the lamb abd serve them with strawberry ketchup from their greenhouses. As for raising them, sorry, don't know - lol.

From what I've seen of them, they are pretty small for meat. I understand spinners and knitters prize their wool.

Shetland sheep make a great addition to small farms because of their small size. The wool is wonderful for spinning and weaving. This sheep is large enough to use for meat. They keep the pastures down without lots of mowing and require very little expense for their care. We feed hay in the winter months and I do put out just a little grain each morning so they will keep coming to the barn on a regular basis.
