ALERT I TOLD YOU ALL THIS ALREADY. CHANGE YOUR TB BOOKMARKS (“I’m getting Bad Gateway”)

So, I’m getting multiple people saying ”I cant get in, I get a Bad Gateway error.”

When I announced over a week ago that we were changing from

XF.TIMEBOMB2000.COM or just TIMEBOMB2000.com

to

I said that everyone needed to alter their bookmarks. Well, evidently about 20% of the membership is unable to perform that function or read the thread I posted.

Now, I’ll say it again: YOU ALL NEED TO CHANGE THE PREFIX OF YOUR BOOKMARKS TO ”WWW” FROM “XF”.

I’ve asked our admin to TEMPORARILY restore the automatic redirect. It takes system resources for that redirect to be active. I’ll have him turn it back off in a couple weeks. THOSE OF YOU WHO CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT I SAID TO DO HAD BETTER FIND A 10-YEAR-OLD KID TO DO IT FOR YOU. Because the next time you get a “Bad Gateway”, it’s going to be for good.

ONE MORE THING:

THE URL FOR THE OLD BOARD IS NOW: WWW.TB2K-LEGACY.COM

I posted the XF/WWW information there too. I SUGGEST YOU BOOKMARK IT AS WELL.

Yes, I’m yelling. I don’t understand the issue with some of you. Sorry to be acting like a dick, but, DAMN....

One more part of the rant: I’ll still be having people FIVE YEARS FROM NOW sending me a PM asking why they can’t get to the board with such-and-such a device. I’m not kidding.

Sure why not. According to some, they are already planning to come by and take everything. 2 birds with one stone thing...

One final thing: we have a FANTASTIC search function here. I paid extra for it.

LEARN TO USE IT.

It should take you 5 seconds to figure it out.

SEARCH? MOI? Surely you jest. :D

People who do not/will not realize that if they can TYPE A QUESTION, they can type a search query are not gonna get it.

Ya know Dennis, for someone who can't make bread without a machine, you're being kinda hard on the non techies...

Just sayin' :crtmn:
What about this do you not understand?

1) I already told everyone IN CLEAR ENGLISH, before we made the change.

2) That thread was on Page One for the better part of a week

3) People had a chance to ask their questions on that thread

4) I cannot hold the hands of 1400 individual members who, for whatever reason, didn’t get/understand the memo

Further, I most certainly CAN make bread. Matter of fact, I’d wager I’m a better cook than a good 80% of the people here. I DON’T HAVE THE SPACE. Did you “not get that” from reading my thread? Shall I jump on a plane and come help you with your PC? (Asking for a friend.)

How to clear cache and cookies VARIES BY BROWSER AND DEVICE. Unless you (or anyone for that matter) is willing to provide:

1 Device Type

2 For PC, what operating system. For hand-helds, the make and model of the device.

3 What browser is being used

Without that information, no one can help you. It’d be like having your car break down. You call AAA and tell them to send help. “What kind of vehicle is it?” (Silence) “Where is it located?” (Silence) “What’s the license plate number?” (Silence)

You think you’ll get help that way? Yet non-technical people routinely believe they can get help by telling others nothing at all. Why is that exactly? Because technical people are supposed to reach inside your heads and extract the necessary information directly? Or is it “Well, you’re supposed to know that stuff.”

Yes, this is my perennially favorite rant, or at least an offshoot thereof. :p

Computers aren’t toasters. You have to actually have at least passing knowledge of How Things Work. You have to be able to look up things you need to know. You need to know how to use a search engine. But I’d wager that over half of all device users (be they PC or hand-held) have absolutely no clue how to use them except how to power them on. (Sorry, I'm on a roll here, and this IS my favorite rant - lol).

Anyhoo, had people DONE WHAT I TOLD THEM TO ON THE FIRST THREAD, no one would have received a Bad Gateway error. But cats don’t like being herded. They like to lay in a sunny spot and play with a catnip toy.

Again sorry for the rant. I’ve been asked the “Why am I getting Bad Gateway” at least 40 times. At some point, it turns into, “WTF PEOPLE??”

ADDENDUM: For folks willing to pay me $1000 plus the cost of a plane ticket and dog kenneling, I’ll fly out to your house and PERSONALLY answer every computer question you can come up with, for one day. As long as 1) you take notes and 2) NEVER ask me one of those questions again. I guarantee that you’ll NEVER get an offer like that from an educational organization.

It makes sense to update a thread, like this, for those who missed it initially. All you would have to do is provide the link in the 40 PM’s without writing a couple of different wordy PM’s 40 times. That would take like 10 seconds. Believe it or not, we all are not equally adept at technology as you are. Didn’t you figure you’d have some glitches when it changed? Seriously, you’ve been doing this long enough to factor that in. We all support this forum, there’s been a couple of changes, and we are all still trying to navigate it. A little patience would come in handy.

Yeah, I grok that. But i never think I’ll get more than a couple, so I take the time to tell them. Cool. Then a couple more. Cool. Then a couple more. Wait, what? Okay. Rinse and repeat. And by the time I lose my cool, I realize that it’s been like 40 freakin people.

And for Pete's sake, check your BIOS bearing. If it's not aligned in the correct reverse polarity things will never work and you'll probably blow up your flux capacitor and FC's are hard to find these days. They're stashed next to the TP in the stores and that entire I'll, isle or aisle is completely empty now.

Dennis, I can’t find the power button on my desktop. Since you aren’t doing anything anyway, can you please draw me a detailed diagram and send it to me ASAP. I really appreciate it.

P. S., I don’t want to have to call 911.

Damn! I did what DO suggested and it worked. Amazing what modern tech can do. As it happens, I already had a viable address. Now I have three.

Ok, so how do I go about logging in to the old site to clear my bookmarks? Tried to log in at the tb2k legacy url, but I was not authorized. TIA

I give up for today. Tomorrow is another day. Sigh

I do not miss the days of Tech Support. On a regular basis I'd get: I don't know, it just stopped working. I didn't change anything. Only to find, once again the end user changed something so they could accomplish a personal task on company time. I remember one guy, had stacks and stacks of paper in his cubical. Later found out it was sheet music; working for the power company.
